A judge has ordered the royal women's
hospital in melbourne to produce the
medical file of a suicidal woman who was
given an abortion when she was 32 weeks
pregnant.
Supreme court judge, justice bill gillard,
dismissed an appeal by the hospital
against an earlier decision by a
magistrate.
Outside the court, victorian health
services commissioner beth wilson said she
was disappointed that patient privacy and
confidentiality should count for so
little.
Unless a decision is made to appeal
against the ruling, the hospital must now
hand over the file to the medical
practitioners' board of victoria.
The woman, known only as mrs x requested
the termination in late january 2000.
She had been told that her baby, may have
skeletal dysplasia, or "dwarfism".
In may 2001, senator julian mcgauran asked
the medical practitioners' board to
investigate the matter.
