Hi all, my father had a prosthetic aortic
valve replacement surgery.
Within two months, he developed a staph
aureus (methyllcin resistant, mrsa)
infection. The infection is under
medical control, thanks to the antibiotic
vancomycin, but he has an abscess in the
area of the valve which the Dr.S say
cannot be treated with antibiotics
alone..
We are told that most, if not all, cases
require surgery to replace the valve.
However, given his weakend heart state,
the Dr.S have indicated that he is likely
not to make it out of surgery or the
follow up recovery.
He miraculously survived the last week,
and we are hoping he can get strong enough
to survive such an operation.
My question is, are there any surgical
techniques to remove such an abscess
without resorting to full valve
replacement. If so, please indicate
where clinical studies could be found.
A follow up question is, does anyone know
of additional antibiotics or combinational
therapy that is more effective than
vancomycin?
With sincere thanks, marc
