Actually I have read online that any kind of warts come from a virus called human papillomavirus. All warts come from hpv, even hand warts. But there are 100's of types of hpv. Only some are genital and sexually transmitted. Although most reamin highly contaigous. For most types though, if you have an abnormal pap result, your doctor will schedule you for a followup appointment for something called a colposcopy and they can usually tell from looking at the displasia if you have one of the sexually transmitted versions of hpv. It is important to find out what exactly is going on so that if you do have hpv you dont transmit it to your sexual partner. And for women some forms of the hpv, especially on the cervix are highly correlated with cervical cancer. Remember, even if you dont have visible warts (which actually most people with hpv do not exhibit visible warts) you can still transmit and the virus to others. Hpv is a skin disease, so it only takes genital to genital contact (that means you dont even have to have sex, the virus can be on a man's testicle's or his inner thighs and if your genitals touch the infected area you will most likely contract the virus).
