Q: Old False Teeth - Good? Bad?

I have a set of false teeth that were made for me in the mid 80s. They fit pretty well and don't seem to be causing any problem. However, just before they were made, I underwent reconstructive surgery on my lower jaw.

Will wearing one set of teeth this long cause problems with the jaw?

Also, recently they have become very hard to clean. Standard cleaners don't seem to help.

Any suggestions?

Older Dentures
In my office I see many people with dentures that have lasted 20 years. Naturally they will discolor and collect tarter and stains, when you go to the dentist for a checkup ask them to clean them with the solution specific for appliances. Another important suggestion is to remove the appliance every night, brush them, and soak in a specific solution you can buy at a convenient store. This will clean the daily deposits left on it as well as give your tissue a chance to "breathe".

As for your jaw, over time with no teeth present to secure optimal bone levels it is proven that the bone level will decrease and shrink. It is important that the partial or denture is periodically checked by a professional to make sure there is no movement when in place and proper eating functions are maintained. Adjustments may have to be made to the appliance.
