Q: Can Kidney Trauma Cause Heart Problems Years Later?

My father was in a severe car accident back in 1961 and, during the past 12 years, has suffered from 2 strokes and various heart issues. He was only 52 when he had his first stroke and has no history of stroke, heart problems, high blood pressure in his family.

When he was in the accident, his pelvis was crushed and both kidneys had been smashed. His kidney function came back and he had no health problems afterward until the stroke 12 years ago.

Can kidney trauma like that cause problems like he has had this many years later? We are just trying to understand where these health problems are coming from. It won't change anything, but it would be comforting to know that maybe there was an explanation.

If anyone has thoughts on this, it would really be helpful for our family.

Family history of strokes and heart attacks is only one of the risk factors for getting stroke or heart attack. Most important risk factors for these disorders are: smoking, diabetes, increased blood cholesterol or triglycerides, hypertension, male sex, stress, obesity, physical inactivity etc.

How many of these risk factors does your father have?

A successfully healed kidney trauma cannot cause heart attack or stroke.
