Tight Throat - Anxiety? Stress?
Hello! I am amazed to hear how many people are feeling this throat thing. I started noticing it a little over a month ago... I am getting married in 15 days! I have been so stressed out and worrying 24/7! When I lay down at night it feels like it gets worse, a feeling of chocking -- just a very tight feeling in my throat. And I feel like there is something stuck in it or something, I try to hack up a hairball! LoL! When I am at home alone..no kid..no fiance, and I am relaxing and thinking about butterflies in the meadows...my throat feels better. At this point since my wedding is coming up, I feel like I can't even breathe sometimes! It's so scary. I just need something to help me get through. Rolling Eyes Oh, and my eye has been twitching ALL DAY!!!

thanks
so i just graduated from high school about a week and a half ago. and i thought everything would be okay but lately i just have been really stressed out and depressed over the fact that i feel like i am doing nothing this summer. and then my throat starting hurting. it felt like it was getting tighter and tighter by the day. i have already been to the doctors/emergency room so much the last couple years over concussions and eye ulcers and other little problems and i hate running up medical bills that my mom has to pay. so i was kinda scared when my throat starting feeling like this and i didnt want to tell her. so hopefully is is just stress also, and it will go away with time. thank you for your posts.

Tight throat
I've been dealing with this feeling for quite some time now too. I've seen a psychiatrist and family doctor and they've put me on many medicines. The problems is i had an allergic reaction awhile ago which resulted in the tight throat and hives, so now any new medicine i go on, my mind makes me have a tight throat and i think i'm getting it from the medicine, so i don't take it for longer than 2 or 3 days.
The feeling is horrible and you just pray that it will go away soon. Some things that do help for a short while are trying to relax and focus on your breathing. I recently tried Yoga and that relaxed me a lot. If you just do things that get your mind off it it seems to be a little better. It just sucks to know that there really isn't a sure-fire way to make it go away on the spot. In the worst moments when you think that your throat is going to close on you you're first thought is to get rushed to the emergency room. But i'm sure we've all been there a few times dealing with this. and they tell you that nothing is wrong. So when you feel like its going to close just try to breathe deep and relax.

Throat Constrictions.
Hi, My name is Caroline.
I have recently been noticing that my throat feels tight for the past few months. It feels as if there is something stuck in my throat, closing the passageway, and it is very painful. I have basically had all of the symptoms you all have had. I have talked to some indiviudals about this and they say it's either due to stress or it's all in my head. I try to massage my throat maybe to ease it, and I've tried to drink a lot of liquid but it seems to do more damage. I am also taking vocal lessons, and I have noticed that this past year my voice has become a lot softer and currently I am finiding it hard to belt out a note, or project my voice. What should I do? Sometimes it's so bad that I choke from swallowing, or it feels as if I am not breathing properly or that I cannot clear my throat. Is there anything that can releave stress, that may decrease this..
Thanks and everyone take care!
Caroline.

I have a very tight throat like muscles have been pulled if that is possible. I also have symtoms of some acid reflux, lots of gas from my stomach. It does tend to go away some when I am swimming in cool water. I cannot afford multiple tests therefore I seek advice from anyone who offers with my sincere thanks ahead of time, oxford

hello everyone!

I am 16 and have suffered from anxiety my whole life, it worstened around my early teens.. i have read all of your comments and i have all the same issues!! It went from depression, not eating, i lost weight, couldnt breath, always always going to the doctors for all the symptoms of anxiety that obviously you all are aware of and are dealing with, i even would stay in hospital parking lots just to feel safe!! its horrible..MY dad has anxiety very bad and my mom as well, so unfortunately i have it too! My doctor has tried and tried different medications but it just doesnt seem to work.. As you know anxiety is very real and only those who experience it know the feeling..
BUT if you are not aware that it is all mind controlled then now you know.. if ever you feel jittery, cant sit still, your mind is racing, cant breath and the tight/closing throat then try to stay calm and focus on the fact that you CAN control it and it will go away!! Yes, i know that the tight closing, ball in the throat is very scary and uncomfortable, personally i think its the worst part of having panic/anxiety disorder, BUT its not real and it wont hurt you!! Do something that will keep ya busy!! There is no knowing when but you will get better, and you eventually learn to control it after dealing with anxiety and panic attacks for a long time.. you can NOT die but you do feel as if you are dying or having a heart attack..
I couldnt go to school, i was out of school for 6 months, never ate in resturants, did not like to go into any stores, you name it!! the best thing to do is DO all of those things that trigger your anxiety, hiding from it all will only worsten it... anxiety is a constant battle but you have to keep fighting against it!! do not let it control you!! Something that may help is, your body can not deal with the stress anxiety causes on you so eventually you get use to it all and it DOES leave!! Sometimes returning around stressful times or sometimes even out of the blew.. but if you just focus on the fact that it can not harm you, you CAN control it!!

I truly hope this helped, as long as this post was, it really will help ya think positve!!

Take it easy Smile

tight throat hyperventilating --stress
I want to thank all of you for your comments... I have been getting these same symptoms as described by many above. I immediately was able to get past an episode just from reading the comments.. I am not alone. If I can be aware of my circumstances when I get that way, I can better control it... I have also been off for the summer (High School Teacher) and have been thinking about going back to work next week, which, although I accept, I am not looking forward to. I have also been drinking lots of coffee, as my husband has a coffee maker that I drink liberally from. That is going to stop right now!!! I also will focus on meditation and trying to remove as much stress as possible.

Again, I really want to thank all of you for putting this serious problem into perspective for me. I was literally having an attack when I happened upon this site!

Throat Tight
Hi,

I'm suffering from some of the same symptoms, and am hoping you guys might have some ideas. My throat feels physically tight, like I'm wearing a tie that is too tight. My upper chest feels tight as well. I can still swallow fine, but this throat tightness is getting extremely annoying. It does go away from time to time, but mainly it feels like I'm being choked.

Ideas? Same thing?

tight throat
SHEEEEWWW this sight has made me feel sooo much better. I have started having tightness in my throat for a few months now, it comes and goes. I have panic or anxiety attacks, sometimes it feels like I am breathing through a coffee stirr, but that was only when I was in the middle of an attack. Now I just seem to stay upset all the time. My Dr. has me on xanax, but I hate taking them. I will only take a little piece of one if I have to during the day, and I will take half of one at night if I need it. I don't like taking medicine. Especially one that makes me feel like a zombie. I told my Dr. that I wanted something I could take as needed. I smoke, and I know how stupid that is, I am going to quit. REALLY!! Sometimes I feel like I would just be ok if things would slow down long enough for me to catch my breath. I feel alot better reading al of your posts. This tightness is driving me crazierrrrr. LOL. Rolling Eyes

That happens to me every night, which is why I came here. I don't want to repeat all the symptoms that everyone else is having but, like you, it happens right before I go to sleep (which is why I'm up at 3am). I too have a history of panic disorder, but I am so convinced that my throat is actually going to close up that I can't sleep. I always feel like this time is going to be different, like it's not anxiety, but it always is. Even though I'm realized this, I still can't sleep right now =[. It's the anticipation too, like is it going to close up? If it is I wish it would just do it already so I can feel ok about calling 911.. I hate going in there and then they tell me I'm having a panic attack =[.

Yea im sure it's caused by anxiety and stress........ holy medical answer my neck gets so dam tight.. god. it feels like im being cursed!!! by something or someone.
During school in class, sometimes my necks get so tight that i feel it twitches sometimes? it feels like a sudden movement. And in class when i feel that my mouth is locked up, making me not to talk or not speaking clearly... wow this stupid neck problem is so damn annoying.

Also the more u think about it, it gets even worse.
Also i just read a thing off a website - cracking your neck also causes your neck tightens up. which i do. But now I will stop cracking my neck.

Tight throat
I also have this problem...oddly enough while reading this i happened to touch my throat. On my left side of my throat there is a ball right by the adams apple i was messing with that and moving it around,i moved it down and suddenly i could breathe...as soon as i let go it went back to its normal spot and it was back to normal and i could even hear when i was breathing it sounded constricted my air sounded cut off. Im thinking maybe when you lay down this causes your neck to bend differently and it causes this to close and tighten up. Everyone seems to have this problem by the adams apple and this is also where my problem seems to occur. I have been stressed out but even when im not stressed and im completely relaxed and happy and not even thinking about that it happens so i find it hard to believe its stress. If you read this and happen to try this be careful because when i did it it closed up more so then before and for a minute i thought i was going to die..I had to go outside and get fresh and because i went into panic mode.

throat closing up
it was good to hear that i am not alone. I've had this problem for 28 years. I thought it was getting better, but over the holidays it's worse. I've been eating badly and think stress has a lot to do with it. It was bad tody and I felt like if I moved around I would die, but laying in bed still makes it worse. I took a hot bath and called my brother to pray for me. I've been to two doctors, one took exrays - nothing. A nose and throat doctor said it was stress. I also took 2 benedryl. It's very scary. I need to slow down and not worry about things. God bless you all. rosemary
