Q: Recovery Question-i'm Always Hungry Now!!

I was anorexic for almost 3 years. Now im almost 15 and got help in march (abt. 3 months ago) but only really started to eat alot this past month. Now I am almost always hungry! I read that 15 year old girls even that are rly active only need to eat slightly over 1500 cal. A day. I eat about 2000. I am worried that I am going to get fat. I was 90 lbs. (5"3) before I went to the doctor, in refeeding I got to 84, and then before I started eating alot I gained to about 99 or 100. Now that I am eating so much I haven't gained any more, but I am afraid that I will. Each day I have swimteam for an hour, do dance dance revolution for an hour, low key aerobics in my room for an hour, and a 45 minute (3 mile/hr) walk. I also only grew an inch from the beginning to the end of middle school. Can I make up this stunted growth cuz both my parents are taller? When will this crazy hunger stop or do I just have a fast metabolism or something? Does hunger actually mean yur body needs more food or should in not eat?

Your metabolism is probably sort of screwed up right now after an eating disorder. So your body has gotten used to no food, it has learned to hold on to every little bit of food it is given. So now once you eat normally ( that great you got help by the way!!) you naturally gain weight really quickly for a few days.

By all the exercise you do, it sounds like you are still struggling with anorexic- type tendencies and worries about your weight. A counselor or therapist can really help with this.

Yes growth is stunted because of anorexia ( I am speaking from experience) and htere is not too much to do except eat as healthy as you can and exercise moderately, not too much.

I also experinced carzy hunger right after "recovery" from anorexia, I guess its b/c you haven't eaten for so long, now that's all your body wants to do...But it stops pretty soon once you strat eating normally and not depriving your body of anything.

I'm sorry this is so long, thanks for taking the time to read this and take care of yourself. Hope this helped.

You Might Need That Many Calories Or More
I think that high school running prevented me from developing a full blown eating disorder at that point. I wanted to be thin so I dropped lots of weight by restriction. I wasn't too light, about 120lbs at 5'5'' when I started running. I dropped weight quickly once I started running without starving myself. I was disappointed, at the time, that I maintained my weight at 110 lbs. It seemed to be this way no matter how much I ate so I ended up eating a lot and not gaining weight. I believed that I was full grown then. When I put on some weight in college though, I did grow more, not in height but my shoulders and other parts of my frame grew. I don't know what your metabolism is doing, but if it is healthy, you probably need closer to 2500-3000 calories for all the activity that you are doing especially if your body wants to grow.

You will be okay.
I am really glad to hear also from people that have come out of this caca*. You must be very proud. Well done.
When people start starving they eat less (of course)...And what they also do is teaching body that it should only deal with this much food.
1st. Body stores everything as a fat (hence people don't start loosing the weight straight away and than all of sudden it just falls down i.E. When body has lost all the fat and starting to consume body tissue and mussels- hence we become weaker, can't hear well, can't see well, brain not functioning etc)
2nd thing is also by giving the body less food...You slow your metabolism. And this is the reason why most diets don't work! You are teaching your body to eat little and only burn out that. Once start eating properly weight will just pile and pile until it all stabilizes!

You have been starving your little tiny body when you were really young. You are still teenager and you body will be changing shape (!) probably until the age of 25. It needs all the calories to be able to function properly and so you can "further develop as a woman".

Just try to listen what body says. Eat. 2000 calories is amount you should take at age of 30 and over but not now. You need all this and it will all fall down again. These crawings are common. It will go away. One advice if crawing too much sweets and that doesn't make you feel good- eat sweet potato. It is packed with great stuff and gets rid of sweet tooth!
Don't be too hard on yourself as you don't want to fall back down in caca* again.

Love,

alena
please take care
