a fiery crash thursday on interstate 10 near u.S. 60 killed two people and injured two others after a motorist stopped in a highspeed lane with a flat tire, officials said.

The 11:40 a.M. Collision in the westbound lanes just north of the baseline road overpass caused traffic to back up for miles.

Arizona department of public safety officer steve volden said a sport utility vehicle slammed into the rear of a dodge intrepid, causing the car to explode, killing the driver and passenger.

Their names were being withheld pending the notification of family.

The driver of the intrepid had hit the brakes attempting to avoid a car that was stopped in the road because of a flat tire, volden said.

He added that the car was stopped in the high-speed lane.

Two other people suffered nonlife-threatening injuries.

Emergency crews took one patient to tempe st. Luke’s hospital and rushed the other to st. Joseph’s hospital and medical center in phoenix.

Three other people in the crash received medical treatment at the scene.

Information regarding which vehicle the injured patients were traveling in was not available.

A fourth car had minor damage.

Volden said the crash should send a warning that drivers need to pull out of traffic when experiencing mechanical troubles, adding that even with a flat tire, it is possible to drive to the shoulder.
