Newbie With Some Lower Back Relief After Surgery Posted: 06-09-05 11:30am
New guy, 35 yr old physical speciman who
spent life taking health for
granted...Long story short... Got folded
in half waterskiing and herniated
disk..L5-s1...Tried to "walk it off" for a
couple months then got the mri.Do to
severe sciatic nerve pain to the right
side...Went to a couple local quacks who
pushed for physical therapy before they
saw the mri.. Finally had the
microdiskectomy done on dec 2004...Felt
great for 2 months then the pain came
back. Doc said the disc had slid back out
 went back in for exact smae surgery
and this time it felt great on the right
side, no more sciatic pain, but after a
couple months, now I have severe back pain
on the opposite side of the sciatic nerve
injury..
This pain is 6 on a 10 scale whereas the
sciatic pain was 8 on a 10 scale...Ive
only been out of surgery since march,
should I give this more time or do I need
to just stretch it out...No therapy was
prescribed, doc said I should be fine
right after the surgery.

I've been told that once you have back
surgery, your back is never the same...
Sorry to hear about all the pain!
I have lower back pain, but mine is due to
a congenital bone defect in my lower
lumbar spine. There really isn't anything
that can be done. I see a chiropractor
and it has helped a lot! I know my doctor
sees a lot of people with your kind of
pain and it seems to help them out. A guy
was just in for a herniated cervical disk
(i over hear all the conversations!).
Anyway, along with the "cracking" I also
have ultrasound and sinewave therapy which
makes my muscles feel relaxed and really
helps with the pain.

I finally am getting some relief, but the
pain bounces from side to side each week.
Now I only have sharp pain on the top of
my right side hip???No sciatic pain or
left side back issues, but the pain on the
right feels almost like a runners kidney
cramp...Im guessing I need to stretch it
out since all I have done is fat around
the house since surgery...

Hi, I am new to this web site also. 8
weeks ago I herniated my l4-l5 disk and
was in so much pain, I could not move
without crying. Went to gp and she put
me on oral steroids. Pain did not get
much better so they did an mri and sent me
to a nerosurgen. He put me on oral
steroids for two more weeks and sent me to
physical therapy. The pt made it worse.
Went back to the nerosurgen and he said I
needed a microdiskectomy. I told he I
thought we were jumping into surgery too
fast and asked about an epidural shot.
He said it would not help me since I have
already taken 3 weeks of oral steroids and
they did not do much. I told him I
wanted to try it anyway before considering
surgery. I an scheduled for the epidural
this week. If it does not help at all I
will have to consider surgery. At this
point I can not sit or stand in one place
for more than 5 minutes.
Back surgery really scares me and I was
looking for someone who has had this kind
of surgery.
I just don't want to be worse off after
the surgery. Also don't want to be on
pain pills the rest of my life.
Do you know of anybody who has had good
success with this. My doctors said there
is 90% success rate. So far I have only
found the 10% that is unsuccessful.

Cant speak for everyone, but I waited for
3 months before going for the
microdiscectomy, and I think that srewd me
worst...By the time I got done wit pt I
was in more pain...After the 1st surgery I
felt great for a month then the disc slid
out even more.Had the surgery again and it
was sore for a month but all I did was fat
around the house...I started stretching
the hammies and back last week and now the
back is finnaly making some progress...
As far as surgery goes, my pain left me
stranded on the toilet one too many
mornings so I had enough and opted to let
my insurance work...
Good luck
