Q: My Mom Has a Red Eye....

The other morning my mom woke up and she said her eye was hurting. Throughout the day, her eye got red and the whole area around her eye is hurting. Any ideas as to what happened? She is going to try to see a doc but it might not happen because she has no insurance and no money on her. Her eye is still red and she says it stings. Please help with a reply

The most common reasons for the problem you described are an infection or foreign object in the eye.

An infection is normaslly indicated by a pulling sensation in the eye, whereas an injury will present as painful as will an object in the eye.

A gp should be able to determine what the most likely cause of the problem is, but unfortunately a split lamp examination remains the best way to diagnose eye problems.

Carefully rolling up her top eye lid may reveal any items in the eye.

Flushing the eye with saline may help. Keeping the eye covered may also be worthwhile.

Thanks, we have an appointment today for her so well see what happens. Another doc said its from her diabetes so she needs to keep on top of that.

If it is from her diabetes then she must keep on top of it otherwise she runs a very good chance of developing cataracts.
