Please help!
I have been having upper and lower back pain for quite some time now. At first I was first told that it had something to do with the sciatic nerve. Then I went to my primary care physician and she said that it was arthritis. Now the upper back pain is getting worse and persistant. It is in between my shoulder blades and it feel like if something was pulling. It has been a week now that I wake up with numbness in my hands a gfew times during the night. In the morning my hands feel very weak and painful. My doctor sais that it has to do with my wieght but I was alot heavier and I never felt these wierd sensations. I really want a second opinion but my health insurance lapsed and until it is not up and running again I cannot see a doctor. Please if you have any tips, answers or any comment that my help my situation please email me.

Ms. Numby :(

Numbness
I have numbness upon waking too....Been happening for a year now, following a car accident. I don't believe I was injured, but who knows? Strange and very very annoying waking up with one or both hands numb no matter how or where I sleep. Have you gotten any answers? I don't even know where to start....A neurologist maybe.

Numbness In Hands When Waking
I am 34 with five children and a part time medical secretary. I have noticed that for the last couple of months I have been waking up with numbness to my hands. I cant do anything with them and have to wait a few moments for feeling to come back into them. It is always to both hands at the same time and cant even manage to hold a cup when this happens. I experience no pain with this but am worried as I would understand if it happens to one hand because I could put it down to sleeping on it but it is always to both hands can anyone put any light on this for me.

Hi to All of You
Hi ellyc1271, heana73, and dawn ebbs ~

I am so sorry to hear all of you are suffering the numbness and pain in your arms and hands.

Ellyc1271 ~

first off I hope the doctor who told you that it was the sciatic nerve was talking about your lower limbs? As I am sure you know the sciatic nerve doesn't effect the upper body. Yes, weight can be a problem as well as arthritis. If you have never been injured it could very well be the arthritis (bone spurs).

Heana73 ~

you would be very surprised to know even if you think your were not injured in the accident you could very well have been. That is why it is so important to always get check out after asap a car accident even if you think you were not hurt. It can be some time later before you feel symptoms from the accident. I am now a retired emt-i and fire fighter and I always strongly suggested people involved in a car accident or any accident for that matter to go to the hospital to be checked over. I am taking it you have not been looked at yet for this? First step is to see you primary doctor and they will know which way to direct you. When it comes to numbness and nerves please always see a neurosurgeon. They are best trained.

Dawn ebbs ~

just because there is no pain doesn't mean a whole lot. When you have numbness you should always at lest have it looked at.

For all of you..... It seems to be a cervical spine problem and you should have it looked at.

I am not a doctor but I have had 7 spine surgeries in the past few years. Four were on the lumbar spine and 3 were on the cervical spine. If you check out spine and beyond you will find more about me and many others who suffer spine problems.

shirl :)

Hi there! Sorry to hear you are having such problems! Yes, it could be from the way you are sleeping, I am not a Dr., it could be carpal tunnel, it could be a lot of things, I sure hope you get to feeling better soon, when I 1st started having carpal tunnel problems, I was told to sleep with my habds on a pillow at night, I do realize what you are going through with the arthritis I have that and a lot of other medical conditions I live in pain 24/7 but I keep moving along.
I do wish you the best!

Thanks for the advice I have never had any spinal or head injuries and I dont have any of the other symptoms to go with carpol tunnel syndrome. I work in the orthopaedic department and should really talk to one of my consultants about this but I really dont think I should waste their time. I think my job doesnt help as I occasionally get numbness in the palms of my hands when im typing too.

EllyC,

If your doctor is telling you that the sciatic nerve is causing your hand problems, your doctor has no idea what he/she is talking about.

Upper back pain in the shoulders could be coming from your cervical spine and spreading down to your hands and fingers is very likely to be the C8 area of your cervical spine. something could be pressing on your nerves in that area and causing the numbness.

The C8 nerve compression can mimic the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome and needs to be checked out with a spine surgeon, as should your lower back pain.

It could be from arthritis and it could be from other spine problems.

You need to see a spine surgeon for evaluation and diagnosis. Probably have an MRI of the entire spine done and maybe an EMG as well.

You need to see either an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spines only or a neurosurgeon that specializes in spines.

Until your insurance kicks in again you could try some ipuprofen to help reduce any inflammation that is occuring.

Blue light, you need to do the same thing. Sounds like a possible C8 nerve compression is going on. It could be from the accident and has just taken time for symptoms to develop. that can happen.

A neurologist is not the one to see, but rather a spine surgeon to see if you have cervical spine issues.

Dawn ebbs, same advise for you.

You all sound like cervical spine issues and ellyc, you sound like you have both cervical and lumbar issues.

A regular physician is not qualified to diagnose and treat spinal problems of any kind and if your regular doctor is trying to do so, I would suggest that you get a new doctor.
If you present to your physician with spinal pain, back pain, numbness etc. you should be immediately referred to a spine surgeon for evaluation and treatment.

Adding supplements to your diet without knowing what is wrong can be dangerous. I would not suggest that you try adding any kind of "minerals, supplements" of any kind until you are properly diagnosed and a spine surgeon says it's OK and safe to do so.

Good luck

Fran
