What Are Some Treatment Options? Posted: 06-02-05 16:28pm
My therapist and family doctor have
decided that I am anorexic. They want me
to enroll in a residential hospital
treatment program. I am afraid to do
that though as I am married and am the one
of us who is working right now. My
husband doesn't want me to do something
like that, but he doesn't really seem to
understand. He thinks that he can just
make me eat or want to eat. It seems to
be more complicated than that though. Is
there any 12 step program for anorexics or
anything? I am wasting away, knowing
that it is a bad thing, but feeling that I
should lose even more.

Hun the most important thing is you, you
need to take care of yourself because if
you get any worse you will be no use to
your husband. Some people don't have an
understanding of eating disorders and we
can't blame them really because only the
people that go through it are the ones who
really understand and that is even
difficult at times.
I really would not recommend a 12 step
programe for many reasons, I know some
people who have done that and it didn't
work at all because after a few months
they went back to the way the were before
hand.
I think the inpatient programe is the best
option because there are family sessions
which are involved in it and that would
help your husband to have a better
understanding of what your going through.
You do deserve to get better and to be
happy and if that means taking time of
work then you should do that, in the long
run its the better option. You are worth
so much more then your eating disorder,
you are not your behaviour.
I would take your parents and doctors
advice, they care for you alot and want
the best for you.
Think of it this way, if you don't get
help now you could get so much worse that
there could come a point when you cannot
work because you are just too sick and
then you don't have a chose you would be
really stuck then, I think its better to
get help now because it will come around
sooner or later.
Recovery is possible and you will get
through this to live a very happy and
fulfilling life, you deserve that, you are
worth that.
Put yourself first and its not being
selfish its being realistic, you deserve
to get better and to live a healthy life,
don't let this eating disorder take over
your life, don't let it hold you back from
truley being happy.
I wish you the best of luck and I really
hope that you make the right decision for
you, its your choice as you will be the
one who will be affected the most ok.
Write to me anytime and take care of
yourself

I appreciate your advice. I called the
recommended hospital earlier this
afternoon. They asked many questions and
said that they would get back to me
tomarrow (the woman taking my answers was
not a psychiatrist). If I am serious
about this, I have to go to my family
doctor and get some blood work done and
enroll within days after they are sent
results. A friend just came over and
offered support about how I really need to
do this for me. I'll check with my hr
person tomarrow to make sure that I am
eligible for medical leave. There are
people at work who have been concerned and
my boss has mentioned it, but I don't
think that he really knows. I hope this
can work. I hope that my husband can
understand too.

There is an organization called overeaters
anonymous. They deal with all types of
eating disorders ~ bulimia, compulsive
eating, anorexia. I am anorexic but found
the oa meetings helpful.
I was also in treatment at remuda ranch in
arizona. It's a 6-week residential
program, very spiritual as well as helpful
for the physical & psychological parts
of anorexia. Insurance may cover you.
Good luck! Get help! Your husband has no
idea (lucky for him)how hard this disease
is to beat. I've been fighting for 30
years (since I was a kid). I haven't
given up yet but it's still tough!

I Went to Anad And My Family Doctor Posted: 06-10-05 16:34pm
I think that I have the abbreviation
right: anorexia and related disorders.
It meets once per week in a nearby city.
I found it helpful. It is sort of
thereputic when people voice the same
thoughts and feelings that i've been
feeling. It is easier to challenge
negative thoughts when they come from
someone else beating themselves up like I
do. It was really amazing how much my
struggles are similiar to these other
women.
I also went to my doctor. She was
concerned that I lost more weight. She
is going to have one of her staff look
into programs that my insurance will pay
for (it turns out that my insurance won't
pay for the recommended program) and/or
closer to home.
Psychotherapy is an integral part of the
treatment for panic attack. Support is
given to the patient to eliminate extreme
fearfulness and the feeling of something
bad is going to happen. Sometimes,
psychotherapy is enough as a treatment for
panic attack. However, since the cause of
panic attacks in most patients is not
clear, treatment varies from person to
person. And in some, psychotherapy alone
may not be sufficient to eliminate the
disorder.
