Help! Should I Have Gallbladder Surgery
Posted: 05-29-05 14:09pm

I am scheduled to have a nissan fundoplication (reflux surgery) and my gallbladder removed in june. I feel confident about the reflux surgery but I unsure about the gallbladder removal. I have alot of chest pain, burning around my breast bone and rib cage and cramping in my back. Some of these symptoms if not all can be caused by reflux. My surgeon sent me for a hida scan with cck and it showed an ejection fraction of 23. I did feel extremely nauseous and had cramping in my back. I also felt nausea on and off for days. It felt like morning sickness. My surgeon recommended that I have my gallbladder removed since he will be in that area with the other surgery. Help! :!:

Hi sherri... I would have it out. Had mine out 11 1/2 weeks ago.. Had the same symptoms... For sev months... The only thing left is the sternum area (breast bone) pain which is going away (i'm on nexium) and some back pain in the morning.. Which isn't near as bad as before the gb surgery. My hida scan came back at 39% but the surgeon said I had all the symptoms of bad gb disease... Thank goodness cause I wouldn't have been able to stand it much longer. What is the reflux surgery?? What do they do for that??? Keep the flapper workin...Lol??? I had lots of inflamation in my esophagus and stomach... But tried all the diff gerd meds and nothing helped... I still had the sternum area pain pretty bad after the surg so gastro doc said to stay on nexium for a while... It helps!

Don't know if you know about this forum or not but you can get some great info in here http://forums.About.Com/ab-wome nshealth/messages/?Msg=10503&redircnt= 1 lots of gb threads in there too... I hop back and forth... Lol

Thanks for you reply....Reflux will cause alot of the same problems as you gallbladder....Reflux surgery is a procedure where they wrap your stomach around your esophagus and make a new "flapper". One that will stay closed after you swallow. What symptoms did you experience when you had your hida scan?

sherri I feel your pain I just recently found out that I too have to have my gallbladder removed and yes it is alot of the same symptoms I have. My doc suggested a low low fat diet to help ease the spasams as he called it I feel like i'm eating rabbit food and essentinally I am I eat raw, cooked veggies with no butter just water, salt & pepper to taste, all dairy is fat free i'm not pain free everyday but it is helping in the long run untill my surgery date (which is still tba)

I just recently had a hida scan done on th 31st of may. They told me the reading was a zero. They told me that was bad but yet they are taking a week to get me back in to schedule surgery. When having surgery does it help out?

Gallbladder Problems

I, too, just had a hida scan this week that came out normal (77%)....My gb sono was normal also. I've been dealing with ruq pain for almost (get this...) 25 years, and no one seems to want to remove my gallbladder! I was even prepped for gb surgery 16 yrs ago and at the last minute, the Dr. Decided not to remove it because "i wasn't vomiting"...Said I had gerd instead. I've been told from previous sono's that I had sludge, now they tell me I don't...And no stones I get waves of nausea most days, no vomiting....But pain so bad that sometimes it doubles me over. I notice that foods are hit or miss.....I can eat mexican food one night and be fine, but have a cup of yogurt at lunch and feel horrible. When the cck was injected during the hida the other day, I had severe ruq pain, cramping and nausea that lasted most of the day afterwards. I'm tired of feeling awful. I have an appointment with a surgeon on the 9th and i'm telling him straight out I want gb surgery. There's obviously something going on....Probably inflamation...Even my gynecologist thinks so since my recurring pain attacks are now also showing in the pelvic area (and I had a tah/bso 4 yrs ago, so the pain isn't gyn related). I'm thinking if the gallbladder comes out, this nightmare will be over.

Get It Out !

Yes, you should have your gallbladder removed I had mine removed in april and feel 100% better even if it is just the reflux why take a chance and have to have surgery again in the future. Might as well get them both done at the same time to avoid going through the surgical pain twice. Well hope everything goes well for you and goodluck!

He knew in his heart thats all that was left for it to be and sure enough we were right lol my gallbladder was inflamed and believe it or not that will show normal test results once he took it out all the pain went away

Thanks charleen....I'm glad you're feeling much better! So far, i'm doing pretty good this week...Eating well and very little discomfort. But I know that good feeling won't last and i'll be back to feeling miserable again. I'm sure looking forward to the surgical consultation on friday. I'll keep you posted...It's getting interesting!
