I just came home from a trip to africa,
and upon arrival I found out that I am
about two months pregnant. For about one
month of this time I was taking
doxycycline as a prophilacis, but it
started to make me too sick, so I stopped
taking it. I guess that was a bad move,
and a week later I came down with a very
bad case of malaria, where the doctors
thought I was going to die. I was at the
time unsure if I was pregnant of not, but
was told by a midwife that even if I had
been pregnant, there was no way that the
baby could survive what I went through and
I would miscarry. So somehow, though,
after recovering and returning home, I am
still pregnant. As of this moment I am
still trying to decide to keep the child
or have an abortion. My big worries are
that the doxycicline had a big warning on
the label that pregnant women should not
take it, and I also think I recall from
somewhere that malaria harms the fetus.
Does anyone know about the effects of the
drugs or severe malaria on the fetus? Do
you think that the baby will be ok, or
should I not take a chance and wait for
another pregnancy to have a child?
Thanks for your help in advance.

I am not sure about the effects of malaria
but I do know that the doxycycline in
early pregnancy can cause the teeth of the
child to be miscolored... The teeth would
either be black of a dark green almost
black color. I would ask your doctor
about the other issues. Sorry I couldn't
be of more help and good luck.

Is there anyway to talk to your Dr. And
get an ultrasound? Keep us posted. How
far along are you?
The best to you!
Sincerely,
