Q: Type Ii Diabetes - Meal Spaced Or 3 Heavy Meals?

Hi. My mother is diagnosed with a type 2 diabetes sometime ago.

This morning, she was referred to see a dietician by the physician after she suddenly felt dizziness and nausea after undergoing blood test in the hospital. Although she had been diagnosed with diabetes, control is mainly through drugs alone. Her habit is to eat little, but to eat often.

I myself also thought that spacing meals is good, as it prevents sudden rise in blood glucose levels, and helps to maintain the blood glucose levels relatively constant.

However, the dietician said she should eat 3 relatively heavy meals at the same time everyday. I wasn't there to listen to the dietician (i'm overseas, far away from my mum), but my mum says that the dietician roughly referred to that eating 3 meals allow the blood glucose levels to fall. Didn't really get what the dietician means.

Could anyone please enlighten me on this matter? Thank you.

Hi,

the main reason that you want to have three meals a day is to allow time for the insulin to "break down" the carbohydrates. If your mom ate more than 3 meals (ex. 5 small meals) her glucose levels would probably be to high because the insulin can not keep up with how much she is eating. Does that help?

Overall, it is important for people living with type 2 diabetes to watch their weight and follow a diet that is consistant from day to day.

Re: Type Ii Diabetes - Meal Spaced Or 3 Heavy Meals?
I totally disagree with what the dietician said. If your mom eats three heavy meals then the body will be flooded with sugar, and then insulin, which will tax the pancreas then potentially lead to hypoglycemia.

In my opinion, eat three regularly scheduled meals moderate in size, making sure to get plenty of fiber in each. Then have snacks in between if hungry to keep the balance of sugar and insulin at normal or as close to normal as possible. I have recently become very diligent about my diet and I feel the difference.

Good luck to your mother - a lot of what she does will be by her own reading and research. Most so-called medical professionals don't know half what those of with this terrible disease know.
