Q: Colon Surgery During Pregnancy

A week ago my doctor performed a colonoscopy on me and found a large, ulcerated tumor. The biopsy showed that it's benign. Because of the biopsy results and my age, 29 years old, my doctor does not believe it to be malignant. However, he referred me to a surgeon to have it removed.

Seven days after the colonoscopy i've found out that i'm 6 weeks pregnant with my first child. The surgeon says that it's imperative I have the ulcerated tumor removed immediately and he's not willing to wait any longer than 3 months due to the cancer risk.

Does anyone know the risk to the fetus from having major colon surgery this early on in a pregnancy? I can't seem to find any information on this subject.

Thank you,
