My mother has been having problems for about 1 yr. With her platelets being to low. She received a called today from her Dr. Saying they were 3.0 critical. What kind of Dr. Do I need to get her to. Isn't this dangerous to continue for so long? Is this some kind of disorder does it have a name?
Thanks, sheila

Antibodies attacking Blood PLatelets
Can someone please help me with provding some answers. His platelets were at 3,000 last week and they gave him some transfusions. Today he went back for a followup and they had dropped to 300. He is going into the hospital tomorrow and will remain until at least sunday. THey may keep him longer if they can't determine the cause. Any ideas?

Well.. I have ITP which is an auto-immune definiciency disorder which makes your body destroy your own platelets. My platelet levels loved hanging out between 1,000-12,000 platelets. In other words, a bleeding disorder. I was diagnosed with ITP at the age of 16. There are various treatments for ITP including prednisone (a corticosteroid) and different types of blood fusions. Unfortunately, there is no cure for ITP. A website that really helped me out when I got sick was www.pdsa.org it's the platelet disorder support association, a page for people with ITP and their families and friends. Go take a look around, they have a good amount of information, and posting boards and such.

Another word of advice: I had taken Prednisone, done different blood fusion treatments, and was even at the risk of having my spleen removed until I found Transfer Factor. I currently take Transfer Factor and have been in remission since I started taking it. I'm not guaranteeing that it works for everyone, cause I have found that with ITP, different treatments work best for different people; however, it did work great for me.
