Sometimes when I am just sitting doing
nothing, my heart will palpitate and it
seems then to spread up to my head and I
get dizzy. I am 56 years old and have
had a hysterectomy and take hormones.

Its possible you may have supraventricular
tachycardia (svt). Svt mainly starts and
ends suddenly. Normal heart beats can be
around 70-80 and with svt, the heart can
beat anywhere from 150 to 300 beats per
minute. Symptoms can be lightheadeness
and chest pain. Episdodes usually last
less than a miniute but some can last
longer.
Among the possible causes are valve
disease, hardening of the arteries,
thyroid disease, or heart failure. Other
causes include drinking too much alcohol,
smoking too many cigarettes, or using too
much caffeine.
If another episode occurs, bear down (like
tying your shoe) and strain lightly.
This will bring your heart rate close to a
normal beat.
If you do have svt, it is curable. Do
not to ignore the problem, check with your
doctor.

When you say you have palpitations what do
you mean? Palpitations mean awareness of
the heartbeat. Is your heartbeat fast
and/or irregular or just extra heavy?

You need to get medical help if the
palpitations are higher than the normal
rate(like 170 bpm or more).I have
tachycardia and every attack is worse than
the last .I always waited for it to go
away but this last time (10-3-04) I
didn't wait, mainly because when it hit me
I was very short of breath and I was tired
of having these episodes. The Dr. Found
the problem and i'm having ablation
surgery this coming tuesday
(11/9/04).Hopefully he fixes the problem.
