Q: Problems With Depo And Birth Control In General

Hi all,

i have been having a lot of problems in the last 4 1/2 years in regards to birth control. I am writing this post for advice and to warn others.

I went on the depo 4 1/2 years ago, I spotted for 3 months and then never had a period again while taking the drug. I thought this was great at the time for I had always head periods from hell, I later began to realize that this is not good for my body. I had been experiencing really bad headaches daily and totally lost my sex drive, I am guessing given that I zero estrogen going in my body. I never really had a weight problem until I quit smoking. It was almost 2 years since I quit and I have gained 25 pounds which has caused me great stress. This was the only reason why I quit the depo, I am happy that I have now. I have heard that depo has been taken off the market in the us and soon will here in canada as well. Studies have shown that 2 years on depo causes serious harm to your bones.

As soon as I went off depo my gp put me on the pill. This gave me regular cycles, although I spot. But in the last 2 months I have been on my period pretty much the entire time. I have noticed as well that I have been mostly passing blood clots, this is since I have given up the depo. I am not sure what this all means and I have to admit I am really nervous about it all. I asked my gp and she said that she did not know what was wrong and said that it is time to try something different. She wants me to go on the patch now, but I have decided no and I have also given up the pills for time being, I totally feel like a science experiment. It angers me off how women's bodies are not valued in medicine. They form birth control all the time and just market it and test later, its funny how they are still working on a male birth control pill all these years later. I also asked her for a bone density test and she refused regardless of the new developments on depo, I feel strange about this all and now feel that I need to find a new gp.

Sorry this is so long, if anyone has any advice or insight to share I would really appreciate it. Thanks

It is an annoying process.. For me my problems come with chronic yeast infections caused by birth control due to the estrogen.. My doctor put me on the depo shot for 9 months because it was the only way for me to be on birth control and actually get rid of the yeast infections. There were no meds that would work. Unfortunately the depo shot gave me really bad acne and after 9 months I had to go off of it. Now I am on the patch which works fine.. But now the yeast infections are back!! Argh!!

Thanks so much for your reply, I really appreicate it. Sorry to hear that you are having problems as well. Acne was also a problem for me when I was on the depo, that is still something that I have not gotten under control. I hope things work themselves out for the both of us soon.

Excessive Bleeding
Hi , I noticed that at the time you posted this you were going through excessive bleeding.

I had one shot and after three months I never got the second shot. During the entire three months and most of the fourth month I spotted every day. It's been about four months now since I have had the shot and I am suffering excessive bleeding, including what seem to be blood clots.

I am wondering if this finally stopped for you or if you had to take extra measures.

Also if anyone reading this has gone through excessive bleeding please let me know how it turned out.

Thanks

I'm not sure about afterwards since I was on it for 9 months (3 shots)... I had the bleeding for the first 3 months but after the second shot I only had spotting for a few days around the time I needed to get another shot. Did you go on another bc afterwards?

Excessive Bleeding
The excessive bleeding stopped on its own after about 3-4 weeks. I asked the doctor about it and she said she wasn't really sure why that happened, but she speculated that it’s because the shot thickens the mucus lining around the uterus, and when you get off the shot the mucus starts coming out.
