I'm 40 and have been getting cold sores since I was a teen. On an average of 3 outbreaks a year, anywhere between my nose and mouth. I've found that neosporn works the best. I've never had a real problem with them until the past 3 years when I passed on this disease (herpes) to my boyfriend. We learned not to kiss if I had one or he would get one. Sometimes he gets one if i'm about to get one and don't know it. Or maybe I got it from him that time. Anyway, he's been lucky and hasn't had one in 6 months. I've had two. Today after we just spent 3 days of passion together, he wakes up this morning with two! I don't even have one! I feel awful because I gave this disease to him and although he's very loving with me, he hates these things and won't even leave his house except for work. Does anyone know what I can do to get rid of this disease or stop him from getting them? No one in my family or no man i've ever kissed has ever gotten them. Please help. Thanks! :)

Abreva seems to work really well. It's available over the counter. You may want to get a small supply of valtrex to have on hand in case of an emergency. It's just so expensive. Be extremely careful with oral sex. You both need protection. You should also wear some type of lip protection or sunscreen at all times in the sun this summer.

Unfortunately, I dont think there is a cure for this.
Once you have it, you have it for life...But there are medications out there as stated in the previous reply to help control it.

Cold Sores Ruining My Love Life!!
Hey toocute, how are you doing?

If reconized early, the attack can be starved off by bathing the area with very hot water. Moist areas delay healing.

Drying lotions, such as calamine of plain alcohol (70 percent), are effective. Zinc oxide on the crusts will hasten recovery.

Good hand washing when a sore is present will help prevent the spread of the infection and will also help prevent the sore from becoming infected with bacteria, which may make the sore last longer. Do not share cups or utensils with another person.

For excellent patient education resources, visit emedicine's teeth and mouth center and brain and nervous system center. Also, see emedicine's patient education articles oral herpes, cold sores, and encephalitis. Emedicinehealth.Com/articles/20533-1.Asp

best wishes,

Try This
I too have been having these since I was child. I not sure where they started. The doctor said it could have been passed through simple things such as sharing cups and so forth. Be careful if you do have them, refain from oral sex during or if you suspect an outbreak...Doing so during an outbreak will lead to gential herpes, which you don't want for either of you.

I use zovirax when I get a cold sore. Your doctor needs to write a note for this though. Given that I have been pretty much having them my whole life I know when they are coming on (i usually get a tingling feeling in the area of my lip where it will come out). I apply the zovirax right away, this also prevents the sore from getting big and therefore not so noticeable. Make sure to keep the area clean and wash your hands often like said in the previous reply. This is something that will never go away but becomes easier to deal with in time when you get used to it and are aware of what to expect.

I use neosporen when I start to feel one coming on and then it never blisters, and eventually you cant even tell.

Never tried neosporin. I used to use mary kay blemish toner with salicylic acid to dry them out.

I also heard white toothpaste (not gel) works too, but you have to leave it on for 2 to 3 days and change it often.

Now I take 1 gram of valtrex when I feel one coming and take it twice a day for 2 days. I had to change doctors to get the prescription for it.

i wish I would have had this years ago. It would have saved me alot of pain and embarassment.

Hey toocute
get some fresh garlic and when you feel a tingle or twinge slice a clove and hold it on the spot for a couple of minutes. Keep that garlic in your hand and when ever you think about it gently rub more on.

This will eliminate the break out if you know one is coming on. If you get the break out it will stop it and start healing.

You'll know when you don't need the garlic anymore.

I've found for really quick healing (sometimes even within 5 days!), an amino acid (lysine) supplement called lypsine (blackmores) is really effective. I've been dealing with coldsores pretty much all my life, I get so depressed when I get one, i've seen so many specialists and doctors and they all gave me different advice. But so far, lypsine (recommended by a naturopath) has been my best friend in my fight against coldsores ^_^ also, take care of your diet and mental health, it can have an effect. Being depressed can bring them on easily because your immune system's ability to fight decreases, and too many chocolates/nuts/sugary things also increases your risk of an attack. Hope this helps! Ah, the hallelujah day when they find a cure for the herpes viruses!

i agree, I am 20 and get very very very very bad coldsore breakouts. Clusters of sometimes 3-4 on one lip, and likewise on the other -- at the same time!! Lysine works wonders, and i've also noticed that if you dab nail polish remover with a qtip onto the sore until it burns the sore will not get any larger, and if you catch it soon enough, it will go away within a day or two.

Lysine works because it is an amino acid that knocks out the vitamin arginine. Coldsores need arginine to reproduce, and it is found in: peanutbutter, chocolate, nuts, raisins, oatmeal, brown rice, coconut, caffeine, whole wheat bread, and more. I take three lysine vitamins a day, and try to reduce my "arginine intake." also, milk and yogurt are great carriers of lysine, so drink up!
