Is Wellbutrin Xl Right For Me? Posted: 04-18-05 18:05pm
The last few months of my life have been
chaotic for me, in a short recap I lost my
job, lost my transfer to a new town, broke
up with my boyfriend, spent a ton of money
on things that didnt provide me any
satisifcation, and have moved about the
country being dubbed a "couch monkey" by a
friend of mine. About three weeks ago I
was sitting in a movie theatre in nyc and
my life seemd to come to a head. I cant
recall the movie I was watching but I know
during the movie I was lost in my head,
couldnt focus and had a general funk all
at once rather than separate incidences
which was more common.
I attributed it to a lingering cold but
looking back over the course of the last
few months I opted to see my doctor to
discuss it. Intially, I wanted to discuss
with my doctor going back on attention
deficit disorder drugs like conscerta or
strattera. I'd been on ritalin most of my
life and while it was effective when I was
younger, I was taken off the pills in high
school. Occasionally through college a
doctor would think that ritalin was needed
but I disagreed and refused treatment. My
doctor said I was depressed and prescribed
wellbutrin xl to combat my depression and
to aid in quitting smoking.
I've been on wellbutrin xl for two weeks
and have not seen any improvement.
Rather, my laid back carefree personality
has become increasingly agitated. Where I
used to be slow to react, I find myself
being more confrontational. Further, I
have a constant headache, feel largethic,
sleep more than I used, have no appetite (
in fact I force myself to eat only when
around people so they wont think i'm
anorexic), feel cloudy most of the time,
in general have a hard time carrying on a
conversation with my friends and family,
and have seen no decrease in my smoking.
Is this supposed to happen? Do I need to
ride it out for two more weeks to see if
it passes or should I be calling my doctor
already?
I've never been on antidepressants before,
except they once prescribed zyban a few
years ago to help me quit smoking but I
stopped that after a week because I had a
cloudy head and felt over excited all day
long. I'm not averse to taking to a pill,
so i'm not looking to quit a treatment
plan. I figured when my mood stablized I
would seek an exercise plan at a gym to
increase my stamina and energy and then
alter my diet to eat healthier. Im just
concerned about the changes i'm seeing in
myself. Any advice or feedback would be
appreciated.

Zyban and wellbutrin are the same drug (in
case you didn't know), and it sounds like
the dopamine action that you are getting
is just getting you too hyped up.
Pretty common I would imagine. Ssris
are usually the first line treatment for
depression these days.
