Howdy, all!

So far, we've practiced the best birth control option in the world -- abstinence. And yes, I can verify for all the world that it is 100% effective against both pregnancy and stds.

But...That's about to change. We're about to get married!

So, here's my question:

we have no fear about stds at all...But we're not ready for a child yet -- not 'til after we finish college in 2 years. What's the best method of birth control for us?

Is the pill/patch effective enough against pregnancy (especially for newlyweds, remember), or should we consider using condoms, too? We'd rather not -- why put a break in the moment? -- but is the pill alone enough? I heard that 8 out of 100 still get pregnant ... Is that true?

Thanks!

Congratulations on getting married! Hope you both are very happy. Well on the birth control issue ... If you ask your doc theyl tell you to use a condom too. I think its safe enough to use the pill. The risk is very low and if you have been on the pill for a long time I think that your body builds up its own defence against falling preg. Its entirly up to you wether you want to risk it or not. I am on the bc pill and have never used a condom with my boyfriend and I havent got caught. Anyways enjoy your honeymoon. ;-)

Both the pill and patch can be very effective (99%) if used right. If you take the pill you have to be consistent and take it right around the same time every day and not miss any pills. If you go with the patch you have to watch for peeling corners and that it's sticking good. I've tried that patch and went back to the pill - that's just what I prefer. When I first started on the pill like 8 years ago my boyfriend and I used condoms too. I was really nervous about getting pregnant. But for the last 5 years we've only relied on the pill. You should be fine with just that if you're careful about taking it.

Have you thought about what kind/brand of pill you'd like to try? Basically there are two different kinds...Monophasic (same amount of hormones in each pill - like yasmin, aleese, nortrel, etc) and triphasic (different amount of hormones each week - like ortho tri-cyclin, tri-cyclin lo, estrostep, etc). Your doctor can help you decide which is best for you. For me the triphasic pills make me sick so I use yasmin. A friend of mine can only use triphasic. Some women also have trouble with breakthrough bleeding on the triphasic pills. You may have to experiment with different brands/kinds to find one that's right for you.

Congratulations on the wedding and have fun on your honeymoon!!!
