My son has been diagnosed with asthma maybe allergies. I've never gotten a true answer. Yesterday, we had some chest x-rays done on his chest. The results came back reading "bony structures normal. Aortic, hilar and cardiac outlines normal. Mild left retrocardiac plate-like atelectatic present. Right lung clear. No pleural effusion. Impression: minimal left retrocardiac plate-like atelectasis." the doctor didn't know what that meant. Can anyone please explain what this means and is it a serious condition we should worry about. The doctor is going to refer us to a specialist, but we must wait about a week before we see him. My son is only 5 years old. What do I do?

Retrocardiac Atelectasis
Crying or Very sad I'm sorry to here that your son is sick. The word retrocardiac means an old scar. And the word atelectasis means collapsed air saks in the lungs. Put together, I don't understand how they fit together, unless your son has scarring on his lungs where the sack have collapsed. I hope he will be alright. I know from personal experience that doctors can do wonderful things. God bless you and your son.
