Ot: Please Help Me Solve This Puzzle Posted: 04-05-05 09:11am
Ok, here's a little something to keep you
occupied, and then maybe I can get some
answers :)
there's a blind guy, a deaf guy and a dumb
guy. 3 guys in total. The blind guy ends
up marrying a really gorgeous woman, and
the other two get jealous and envious.
Then the deaf guy starts having an affair
with the blind guy's wife.
So here's the question: how does the dumb
guy tell the blind guy that the deaf guy
and the girl (blind guy's wife) are having
an affair?

On holiday I encountered beggar guys
giving out cards and leaving little
objects on the table to buy and he left a
card telling us he was 'deaf and dumb' and
couldn't hear or speak.
So I assumed that's what it means. I think
mute may be a better word for it.

Yeah, they called people "deaf and dumb"
if they couldn't hear or speak. "Dumb" is
another (more rude) way of saying mute.

actually it's British.
It's not rude when used in the correct
context and it most definately doesn't
mean stupid (although your comment was
most definately ignorant).
deaf, dumb and blind - the three most
common sensory handicaps that affect
people in society.

In ordinary spoken English, a sentence
such as He is dumb will be interpreted to
mean “He is stupid” rather than “He
lacks the power of speech.” “Lacking
the power of speech” is, however, the
original sense of the word, but it has
been eclipsed by the meaning “stupid.”
For this change in meaning, it appears
that the Germans are responsible. German
has a similar and related word dumm that
means “stupid,” and over time, as a
result of the waves of German immigrants
to the United States, it has come to
influence the meaning of English dumb.
This is one of dozens of marks left by
German on American English. Some words,
like kindergarten, dachshund, and schnapps
still have a German feel or are associated
to some extent with Germany, but others,
like bum, cookbook, fresh (in the meaning
“impertinent”), rifle, and noodle have
become so thoroughly Americanized their
German origins may surprise some.

And given that you live in Canada while I
live in England I think you will find that
I am fully aware of how we speak in
England.
and if you'd like to actually read what I

The partial sentence of "he is dumb" lacks
any context and anyone would therefore be
unable to ascertain your intent.

Everyone speaks in different tongues - I
couldn't say the word in this forum, which
In England we use to refer to a cigerette,
as in the US it's offenceive to
Homosexuals. Dumb in England means not
being able to speak ... just like the
Americans call thier posteriers *fanny*
.. so I don't know why this has caused an
argument, all languages are different,
even in England - eh Kia ? Up North of
England they speak totally different than
that from Southern England ...

For those that are curious - Scotland is
not North of England .....places like
Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham are !
North of Great Britain is Scotland ...

Great Britain is like your United States

England, Scotland and Wales all 3
countries make up Great Britain..or
Britain (we drop the Great sometimes)
Ireland is over the waters, but it isn't
part of GB !! - well that bit confuses me
to .. IS Ireland part of GB - I know
Northern Ireland isn't ... see that's a
differernt story ...
