Should I let my dentist perform my root canal? Or should I go to a endodontics? It will cost a lot more... I'm not in pain 24-7 but have a lot of sensitivity when I eat and drink since I got my cavity filled last month. My dentist says I need to get a root canal... I don't know what to do.

Root Canal
All general dentists are able to do root canals. Some prefer not to and will refer out. If your denitist does not feel there is anything complicated about it I wouldn't bother going to a endodontist. It does cost alot more. Root canals are pretty straight foreward and you are well frozen. You wouldn't know it to be any different than a filling. It usually takes 1 1/2 hrs or so to complete. He/she will remove the nerve of the tooth so the pain will be gone. Good luck

I totally agree with bt. I just had a root canal started on monday and have to go back to get it finished up on thursday of next week.

I always get the gas and my dentist prescribes valium for me to take before I get in the chair.

I am a nervous wreck at the dentists office and this guy is super gentle unlike the dentists in the navy (explains my total fear of the dentist).

I would not go to an endodontist unless you are going to have a specially made crown like gold or diamond encrusted or something decerative like that.

I would see an endodontist.I have worked as a dental assistant for 17 years and have seen way too many poorly performed root canals by general dentists. Not that some general dentists can't do them well,as some do.But-for the majority of general dentists-root canals are not their thing. It is absolutely more money to have your root canal done by a specialist, but I would rather have it done right the first time and lessen my chances for complication. That's my opinion, but I have seen both types of root canals-and I would want a specialist over a general dentist ant day.
