Ideally tampons should be changed every
4-6 hours to decrease the risk of
infection. Remember to wash your hands
before inserting or removing tampons.
For sanitary reasons, pads should be worn
over night. If you leave a tampon in
longer than 6 hours you are increasing
your risk of infection. You will begin
to have foul-smelling discharge, itching
or burning. Pads can be worn daily, but
again should be changed every 6 hours.

When I use pads I change them quite often
because it is just disgusting to feel. I
also sleep with tampons in- against better
judgement. I've never had a problem. I
only do it on my first couple days when
the flow is heavy. If I don't use a
tampon at bedtime it is just a nasty mess
in the morning.
