Terrified to get sick.OCD. Emetephobia
Wow-I had no idea how many people suffer from this phobia. I have had Emetephobia for about 5 years and I am almost 30 years old. I have been searching for about 5 years for a cure and haven't found one yet...but I'm determined. I made it through my pregnancy with my son with no morning sickness, however, it wasn't until he was born that I developed the severe fear of vomiting, him vomiting, stomach viruses and most of all the common cold and flu. I am absolutely terrified of getting sick, any kind of sick, I am absolutely terrified of my son getting sick (any kind of sick), husband sick (any kin). If my family or friends have colds, or any kind of sickness or even mention they don't feel well or have been around others who have been sick, I panic ---full blown panic and I refuse to be around them or allow them near my son or husband for at least 2 weeks. This is ruining my life and I can't take it. I thought it would get easier as my son grew up, he's 5 now and speaks very well so it isn't like he can't tell me that he doesn't feel well, but I still worry that he's going to get sick and panic at the first sign of illness.I homeschool my son because of fears of him getting sick...It's horrible. My friends and family hate coming to my house because it makes them uncomfortable with how clean my house is, how I constantly go behind them and clean. I am constantly washing hands and I have resorted to getting firm with my son if I see him touching his eyes, nose or mouth with out washing his hands first and after. It's driving me crazy and I don't know what to do anymore. It's fall now and I am TERRIFIED of the Swine Flu, the regular Flu and of course common colds...I wish I could keep my family and myself in the house and not expose them to the germs that are out there in the winter...I'd lock the doors and not allow anyone out until Spring time.

I have been reading everyones posts and am amazed at the amount of people that are suffering from the same thing I am. I am so conflicted over this phobia. I am 25 now and have been afraid to throw up ever since i was 10. I have no idea why i feel this way but thoughts of throwing up have interfered with my entire life. I thought I was the only one with this disease. To deal with this fear, I have just been taking anti nausea medication which scares me so much because I kno that I am killing my insides but I just cant stop. The fear is just too powerful. Has anyone found a way to cure this? What triggers this?

Emetophobia
I know exactly what everyone means! I'm emetophobic and I pretty much obsess over being or getting sick everyday.

I've found some REALLY comforting stuff on the internet about the norovirus sickness bug, that will probably help a lot of people with this fear...

"The vomiting is a secondary response. It's your body's way, evolutionarily, to respond to an infection. It doesn't actually do anything to help you. (This is probably why, if you can stop the vomit response with anti-emetic drugs or even from anxiety...then it doesn't make the course of the virus any worse. ) There is no need to get the virus out of there, as its not in your stomach anyway s in your intestinal tract. The brain may allow you to "not vomit" if you convince it to. While this is a fine idea when infected with norovirus, its not if you've ingested a chemical poison."

It is ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE to get infected in any of the following ways:

1. Being near someone who has it, including co-workers or friends
2. Being on a plane with people who have it
3. Breathing the same air as someone who has it
4. Being in the same building as someone who has it
5. Walking past a pool of vomit on the floor, road or sidewalk
6. Through having sexual relations with an infected person
7. Through a cut in your skin
8. Through your rectum or genitalia (as in, on a toilet)
9. Kissing someone who is not yet showing symptoms (note: it may be possible to catch it from someone who has recently vomited by kissing them, as viral particles may be in their mouth from vomitus. But the virus is NOT transmitted through saliva)
10. Number 6, above, applies similarly to sharing cups or utensils with someone as well.

I hope this is helpful I know how hard emetophobia can be.
