Q: Acute Pain In Anterior Area of Elbow
asked by: arosetti on March 18th, 2005
New User
In the middle of the night,....I suddenly developed a very acute, sharp pain on the anterior 'ball' or 'point' of my elbow.

The pain only occurs with pressure (even slight pressure) to that exact area. I have no pain otherwise,...Have no range of movement paint,...Rotation, wrist rotation while moving elbow is all fine and causes no pain.

Had it 6 days now,........

It has not spread,...And again,...Requires pressure on the area to produce a very sharp acute pain. No soreness or ache at all otherwise.

Any ideas?.....Any treatment??

Sharp Elbow Pain
I have been cruising articles on the internet trying to find a description of the pain I have had for the past week. Your description of the sharp acute pain in the ball of the elbow is
exactly what I am experiencing! Tennis elbow, bursitis, etc.. Doesn't seem to describe what I am experiencing. What is causing it? Did you find out?

I have the answer!
Hey guys, I have the very same problem, right at the tip of my elbow bone, and I went to the doc today and he diagnosed bursitis. He said to take ibuprofen 3 times a day and apply heat. It should go away. If it doesn't, you can get steroid injections for the pain.

I have this, too - for about two weeks. Possibly from leabing on my elbow too much while working? Evobabe, did the ibuprofen & heat work?

Anyone else have any luck?

sharp elbow pain
Are any of you experiencing an almost splinter-like sensation? I'm a metalworker and I was thinking the pain was being caused by a steel sliver. I searched with a magnifying glass and tweezers to no avail. My case sounds the same as one reply above..... I can move my arm freely without pain. But,if I just lightly lean on it or overflex my bicep the pain occurs . The pain is like a needle stick.

sharp pain here too
This sounds like what I have as well. It's extremely localized, almost to a single spot on the elbow. But when I put any pressure on that spot, it's like a flaming stab of pain. No impairment of my range of motion, but I have no idea how to treat this. Has anyone found a fix?

I have had this prob too for about a week. I thought I had rested my elbow on a piece of sharp metal or debris, it was sharp and very localized. It only happens when I rest my elbow on a table, and I yelp! It really hurts, but there are no cuts, bruises bumps, no change in range of motion, it's almost phantom like. Wierd! Any ideas what it could be?

Right on the tip of only my right elbow. There's no swelling, redness, loss of motion, or lumps. It's just a sharp, knife-like stab to the tip when pressure is gently applied. I'm thinking it's the arm rest that I'm using with my right arm although it seems kind of silly. It has occurred maybe once a month for a year or two now. I haven't paid much attention to it until today when the pain took a bit longer to go away. Bursitis sounds like a legitimate diagnosis although this IS the internet. Gotta go see my doc first.

Same thing
I lay down on my stomach yesterday and propped myself up on my elbows. I experienced the same thing exactly. I thought I'd laid my elbow down on a needle or something. Searching my elbow found no traces of any splinter of any kind. It gets worse if I lean on it on a certain spot, but grabbing the skin and squeezing it doesn't hurt, definitely caused by pressure. I rest my elbows on a desk all day and I believe this may be causing it

Sharpe splintering pain on exterior of elbow, unable to place
I have had teh same thing for about 6-8 months now, it comes and goes and sometimes I forget about it. In the winter if i wore a tight shirt or a jacket that pressed against my elbow when pulled taught I would get a sudden sharp pain like a needle or knifepoint going into my elbow and it would hang around for a few mins after, cant locate on elbow to touch but if i moved the elbow skin around or if the shirt went against again in those minutes the pain would return, only to go away later. It happens in both elbows indiscrimently and as I say goes away for weeks to return later the same. I read somewhere something about 'student elbow' from leaning on the points for too long(finished uni last year) but did actually get it till I left uni. help?

I'm wondering if there might be two different things being described here. Mine does not feel at all like a splinter or needle stick - It's a much sharper intense pain than that (similar to some of the posts above). I looked at the symptoms for bursitis but I don't think that really fits. I have no aching or anything like that but if the slightest pressure hits that certain spot...YIKES!!!!

I also have the same thing, I thought I must have leant on a bit of glass or something as I cannot see or feel any splinter.
Feels like a needle sticking into my outer elbow, a little in the direction of my hand.
If I try to feel it with my other hand, I have trouble finding it, then if I put pressure on it with a finger, it fires up again.
I went to the doctor and had some xrays and an ultrasound today.
Won't find out till next week though.

Hmm-I have noticed at the tip of my elbow that it is becoming more pointed..I rest my elbows on tables, desks where ever as it is easier for me without having the pulling sensation from my shoulders as I have rotator tuff tare on left side..Last night i looked int he mirror and it was very dry and bright red and hot to touch..I placed cortisone cream and a patch will see if this helps..I am curious about what you find out wilwang..kd

i dont participate in either of these sports and have no trouble lifting/holding, its more a reaction to direct pressure to the elbow rather than a strain injury.

Acute Elbow Pain at the tip of the elbow caused by impact.
I have the same acute pain that seems to be due to some nerve damage. It started when I banged the tip my elbow into a corner. It's been over a year now, and it just recently started to get worse. Until a week ago, I only felt pain when I would lay the tip of my elbow against something hard, but now I can feel it when I rub the tip of my elbow with my other hand, or at times, even when I bend my elbow a lot. There is no redness or inflammation or soreness whatsoever. IS there anything I can do to get rid of this condition, or at least lessen it? It is getting a lot worse. Thnks

Just so you all know, Tennis elbow and UCL are VERY similar. I've thought I've had tennis elbow for the past 2 months, but upon further research I think I damaged the UCL in my elbow. The Ulnar Connective Ligament or something like that. It's extremely hot and sharp pain in my right elbow, it's hard to squeeze things or hold weight in my hand with an outstretched arm. Even pushing buttons fast hurts after awhile. I do martial arts as well, it's my primary arm, so how do you NOT use it?? I've just been dealing with the pain, but I have a high pain threshold as well. I just have no money to see a doctor.......
