I'm 28 and see the dentist every 6 months-
and generally get about 2-4 cavities
filled a year--every year since I was 4...
We just moved to our area and I just had
2 cavities filled by a new dentist -
first off, the dentist wanted to charge me
$100 for nitrous! I have never had to
pay for it- it was always included in my
work before- so I declined. I got shots
for both molars (top and bottom) and the
dr started on the bottom and struck a
nerve (like biting into foil with a metal
filling) and stopped gave me another shot
- and attempted to continue - struck a
nerve again- 4 shots later, he decided to
fill the top - drilled for a good 45
minutes with no problem on top finishing
with, you need a crown in the next 2
years---i need a crown??? I am too young
for a crown! He proceeded with the
bottom molar...Immediate intense pain
again...He called the other dentist in for
a second opinion, she mentioned they have
nitrous - I said I always get nitrous, but
cannot afford it in their office...She
said they would give it to me free.
Finally he could drill with seriously much
reduced and tollerable pain... Now
today, I am sore and swollen and can't
open my mouth. I am really concerned,
and don't know if I should go back to this
dentist... Anyone experience the same
thing? Why couldnt I go numb?

Poor peanut! You are the victim of poor
communication. You are indeed not too young
to have a crown and your dentist did the
right thing by preparing you for the
dental work in the future. It is a shame
that you did not get numb right away and
your jaw is probably sore from all the
injections $100 for nitrous sounds a bit
steep, but remember that your dentist does
not get it for free. They have to pay
additional liability insurance to have it
in the office, plus the cost of the gas
itself and the scavenger equipment that
makes the nitrous safe for others in the
office. So,if you were getting it for free
elsewhere,consider that a bonus. Next
time you see the dentist, make sure you ask
what to expect and what you can be
prepared to pay, that will help minimize
your anxiety over cost if you know what to
expect.Most dentists will accept payment
plans,if you let them know ahead of time
that you need to make payments over
time.Good luck to you.

Patty, thank you very much for your
reassuring comments. My jaw is so
totally sore...Even now, I feel like I got
socked in the jaw... I seriously never
want to see a dentist again...But of
course am really concerned about this
future crown... I guess I didn't realize
how lucky I was in san francisco to have
such superb dental care at such reasonable
rates!
