stiff fingers
I too have stiff fingers in the morning but no discoloration. I just read an article on prevent disease which talks about the co-relation between stiff fingers and being overweight, BMI over 25. That's something I'd never thought of. Could be.

morning stiffness
hello everybody...
i was surfing the internet to know more about Carpal Tunnel Syndrome which my doc suspects i have..and it led me to arthritis after entering my symptoms !..i'm 25..it started a year ago..morning stiffness in both hands..all fingers..i can't easily close my hands..but it doen't stop me from starting my day normally..and recently i had some finger joints pain..not so often though..i thought it might be because of the A/C..or..lack of vitamin D..or sth related to my lifestyle..i went to the doctor yesterday..that stiffness was the only symptom..the physical exam. he ran in the clinic was negative...and i didn't have other diseases or family history of arthritis ..& not pregnant..so he decided it may be very early symptoms of CTS..and ran some blood tests including rheumatoid..xray..ultrasound..and since i'm in the early stages as he suggested all results should be normal and negative (if its not any other disease)..he already gave me Voltaren and Elmetacin spray..but after reading about CTS symptoms..they tend to exclude the little finger..and mentioned numbness and pain that wakes you up at night.!..anyways...i'm now confused btw bothe diseases..waiting for the test results..and will take the medication..whatever it is..i hope it goes away..

stiff fingers
it started last march (2008) and i went to see doctor about it. really swollen fingers and joint pain, all fingers stiff every morning and late at night. i had to push to see a specalist at the hospital. this specialist did blood tests, xrays and scans, which all came back clear. the scan showed a little swelling on some fingers. but as the appointment was in the afternoon it wasnt at its worst. the specialist said it was inflammatory arthritis, so now im on sulphasalizine 4 tablets a day which got rid of the swelling and stiffness for the first 3 months. but now the stiffness and swelling is back and just as bad as it was.
ive had regular blood tests every month just to keep a check, but still all clear.
im at a loss as to what it is, and cannot go on like this forever. i work at a boarding kennels and start work early, and its beginning to stop me from working again. i am only 24 years old.
does anyone have any ideas/answers??

Hello
You can understand why conventional medical practice can be so off the mark and ineffective if you know some of the basic facts about referred myofascial pain.

For example, wrist pain, which makes you feel like you have a wrist sprain, very often comes from trigger points in extensor carpi ulnaris or flexor carpi ulnaris muscles of the forearm.

Finger pain, thumb pain, and pain in the web of the thumb can also come from muscles of the forearm, although it’s not uncommon to trace the trouble to more distant muscles in the shoulder, neck, and upper arm.

potassium for stiffness helped me
I have, degenerative disc disease L5 S1,
and buldging disc, and hip bursitis.& bone spurs.

I found out on youtube that Potassium works for stiffness, I was in such bad shape I could barley walk with being so stiff, I tryed Potassium and the stiffness was Gone.

it was like a miracle for me.

I took two potassium 50 mg pills a day,
now I only take one 50mg pill for stiffness every once in awhile..
( you can find Potassium at walmart or shoppers drug mart)

I was also told my my Rhumy doctor to take vitamin C & D, and calicum with magnesium to help build the bones back up again.

I have the same thing, no cortisol please. I had it 5 years ago. I changed my diet to mostly vegan and it disappeared. No it's coming back. I think I've been eating too much chocolate (with trans fats) lately and dairy during the holidays.

I'll start drinking lots of pure water and stop the trans and saturated fats again. It helps, but it takes up to two weeks to feel the difference.

I have sort of the same thing occasionally, I work in construction, so sometimes after I lift things like sheets of plywood (where my fingers would be curled up underneath) I notice that my fingers go REALLY stiff, like I have to bend them back manually with my other hand or wait a while. Its usually sore after that. It used to be really bad back when I started this job, but its gotten better.

I've never had them stiff in the morning, although I sometimes have difficulty making a fist in the morning, as someone else mentioned.

I have the same problem as all you guys. I have stiff hands in the mornings with trigger finger at times. I have been to a specialist who says it is overuse syndrome. I find that holding my hands under warm water first thing in the morning helps greatly. I retired from an office job last year and took up gardening and related activities. I find that the use of chainsaws or strimmers seems to make the problem worse. still no nearer to a cure.

Hi I have similar problems with my fingers. It started about a year ago. My little finger seixed up and constantly looks swollen. Now my thumb and index finger of my left hand seizes up at night. I have had blood tests and x rays which have shown nothing. I am a great believer in natural remedies (and the fact that the doctors haven't got a clue because I don't smoke, am 37, and don't use my hands for anything). so I am going to try acupunture. I also feel that I am very tense in my shoulders and back and think that this might attribute to the joints; so I am going to have a deep massage.
The chinese doctor mentioned my circulation not working properly and that I have a virus that I have not been able to shift, which has brought on my vertigo. I think that this is all linked, somehow. Anyway, I hope it helps. will let you know if it does.

Finger Stiffness
I'm a 20 year old right handed male, the pain happens on my left hand. Most of the pain/stiffness is focused on the finger next to my left pinky and sometimes to fingers around it. This started happening about a month after I got a new job, I also see that after I wake up in beds in different areas of the house, I start feeling better in mornings. I've noticed that taping a pencil/pen around my fingers with the problem helps alot, but I usually come home very late and tired so I don't always get to do this. If you try this make sure the pencil tip is dull Smile

Edit: My older brother says it might be from lifting weights, but I disagree since I've been doing that for years. Main changes that might be the cause is the new job or because I slept in a bed right next to the window, while the weather is constantly changing here in Chicago.

Stiff fingers
I started having stiff fingers in both hands in the morning and if I rest during the day. After visits to my family physician and my orthopedist, both suggest that it is osteoarthritis; however, I do not have any pain if the joint is pressed and any pain is due to trying to close my hand. I skimmed through about 7 arthritis books from the library and discovered two other possibilities. One was "the fifth disease" which is a childhood disease that can affect adults. It can cause stiffness in the fingers, hand, wrist, or knee joints for days or months. The other was Ulnar nerve entrapment. Since my pinky and ring fingers are the worst (Ulnar nerve), I decided to do the suggested exercises for stretching the wrist and forearm muscles. My stiffness was gone in minutes!!! I am no longer taking any NSAIDS (didn't do much anyway), and find that although my fingers are stiff at night, they are much better during the day.

Stiff Fingers
Well I am another stiff hands and fingers person. I had a hand nerve study done on both hands a week ago, and isn't Carpal Tunnel.
I am on a waiting list to have a left trigger thumb fixed. Had a right ring trigger finger operated on a couple of years ago, and that is fine now. Also had a left hand Carpal Tunnel Op as well. Was interested to read re Thyroid, as I have had 2/3rds removed, so will talk to my doctor tomorrow re that possibility.. But can't believe so many people have the same problem, so maybe between us all, we might find something to help us. But is no fun in the nights and mornings, re all this. Mizpah

Knuckle cracking, stiff fingers, and other naughty stuff.
I am 15 years old. I play piano, and I have to lift heavy objects at work. I have this same thing, pretty much. Its from cracking your knuckles in the past.I cracked the fingers on my right hand for a month, when I was like, 12 and now they are stiff. Cracking your knuckles dosn't really mess up the cartlidge , but they do make them larger and thus, heavier. It makes the chances of stiffness higher, though arthritis isn't proven, to have a connection it most likely does. The best thing I tend to do is keep a fist for as long as posible. Even when you sleep. Not a hard fist, just a normal closed fist. One more thing, (for men) Master bating tends to give out muscle tension in the fingers which dosn't help the stiffness. Why do you think, people joke about not making a fist after, well, y'know. The reason why its ussualy in the right hand is because 90 percent of us are right handed. Any repetitive, acts with the hand can stress on the fingers.

I have never cracked my knuckles, as I hate it. So not a problem I have... I had hand and wrist x rays last week, and show arthritic changes in my phalanges. Waiting to see doctor again...
