Can someone help me? I am 23 and have had migraines for years. Yesterday it was so bad I went to Dr. Office and they sent me to the hospital. Did a cat scan and lumbar puncture and everything was normal, they said they couldn't give me any more pain meds so they sent me home at 4 am with vicodin. Now it is 4 pm (over 30 hours into migraine) and pain is still intense. Will it go away? I take maxalt, compazine and prozac for prevention. Any advice?

I've been getting them since I was 12, i'm now 31. I tried everything from pain pills, to treat the headaches as they came, to antidepressants & heart medications taken daily to prevent them from coming.

The medication I take now is called topamax, it's an an epilepsy medication, and I take it daily to prevent migraines, rather than taking something once I already have one.

I started taking it about two months before it was fda approved for migraines, and it works great, although my headaches have started to come back in the last few months.

I've had two so far, but they're nowhere near as bad as they would be without the topamax, i'm not spending 12 or more hours in the bathroom throwing up like I would be without the medication.

It takes some getting used to in the beginning until you get your dose adjusted, and some side effects that I had were tingling in my face and hands, but it went away over time, and it wasn't constant. I'd rather put up with that than the migraines.

Hi

i am 26 and have been getting severe migraines since I was 12. I have tried everything on and off the drug market. I cant even tell you how many perscriptions doctors have given me. Imitrex should get rid of your migraines, but unfortunately I have found nothing to prevent mine yet. Imitrex did give me my life back. I take a shot when I have a migraine, then lie down for about 15 min and it usually goes away.

I just started taking a new medication as a preventative, but still holding on to my imitrex for when they occur.

Just to be brief, imitrex has also helped my headaches when no other drug has in my whole entire 34 years of life...

Drug Rebound Headaches---caused From to Much Medication
Hi kelly, I just wanted to advise you on something called drug rebound
headaches...Actually it is un-diagnoised by doctors. It is from the over use of medication both prescription and over the counter medication. I can only recommend you check into it. I just found out, and after suffering severly for many years....Just one month and a half ago I had to go through a withdrwl stage with horrible headache lasting 72 hours and the other symptoms that comes with it. I can honestly say it was all worth it. To even wake up one day without it is great.....The best thing I can recommend it first find a neurologist you can work with...And mention drug rebound headaches...It can't hurt to try...Good luck now..... Topamax As a Preventative
Hi kelly,

like you, I also suffer from several migraines each month and almost daily headaches. I am trying topamax like one of the other posters and have high hopes that this might really help. It might be one to look into if you are getting them regularly. I also know a friend who has responded well to rebound withdrawal treatment as mentioned above - everyone is different.
Best of luck!
