Q: Weight Gain With Anti Depressents?
asked by: Lonelygirl on February 16th, 2005

Has anyone experienced weight gain with taking anti depressents. I have been taking them since this summer and in that same time period I have gained a significant amount of weight. Up until I was on these pills I had been the same weight for about 10 years!

Anyone else have this problem?

Depends
What type of antidepressant are you taking ?

I have tried lexapro, zoloft, and now - effexor . None of these caused me to gain weight, as they are said to be weight neutral. However, I know for a fact that paxil is definitely a weight gaining pill. If that's what you've been taking then that is probably the cause of your weight gain.

Peace.

Change Is Good
I did some research-talking w/ people who are currently taking celexa or who have in the past, and I did some reading on the ssri. I found out that an overwhelming majority of those who took celexa did experience weight gain however, it causes less of a weight gain than paxil. (so if weight gain is an issue-never take paxil) don't worry about it much while taking zoloft. It's supposed to be weight neutral. Just eat healthily, and you should be fine.

I hope zoloft works for you. Side effect (when I took it) were not too bad at all. I just felt a little nauseous in the beginning.

Peace.

Prozac
I recently quit taking my prozac and have experienced weight gain. I guess this could be expected because I had lost weight when I began taking it 6 mos ago. But is there any chance that these two are not related? Has anyone else experienced weight gain after discontinuing antidepresants? I am curious because around the same time I also quit taking my birth control.

Zoloft can and usually will cause weight gain. Some people experience weight loss but they're the minority. Wellbutrin is better if you don't want to gain, because people taking it usually experience at least 5 pounds of weight loss. Effexor causes weight loss because it usually makes people feel nauscious. When I took zoloft I lost a little weight because if and when I would work out on it, i'd get so tired, i'd just sleep all day, wake up go to class, then come home and go back to sleep. Hated it, said I wasn't depressed and got back on adderall.

Some pharmaceutical drugs can cause weight gain because these medications work by inactivating vitamin b6 and this may affect the natural production of serotonin.

There are some nutritional way of treating depression without recourse to drugs. But once on drugs you cannot withdraw from them without medical supervision.

Please read:

depression a nutritional disorder

and discuss with your therapist.

Being Fat Blows!
I started taking paxil almost 5 years ago and before then I was pretty thin, about 120 and 5'7" and I remember the day my doctor perscribed the meds, my doctor saying "if you turn to the side you disappear." now i'd never been the thin one, always kind of a chubby kid but lost the baby fat in highschool. At the time I was 19. I was my thinnest ever because my anxiety was so bad, I never ate. Noooooow i've gained about 70lbs. Yes. 70! I don't even recognize myself and that makes me depressed (go figure.) pretty much anyone i've ever talked to who've taken paxil told me they'd blown up. Then my mom doesn't make it better by saying "you need to lose weight! Exercise! Go to the gym!" because the paxil also makes me pretty tired, all...The...Time. No freakin energy. Yeah. I'm mad. But atleast my anxiety is pretty much under control. Yep.

I do think mine is partially because now that i'm not constantly in panic mode and am able to actually eat food without throwing up, has made me gain weight but yeah, my appetite is huge! I remember trying to eat quantities before that I could eat now and be totally stuffed. But too I have serious lack of energy or else i'd work out to shed some pounds. I miss being thin, shallow yes, but I don't miss trying to choke down just a slice of dry toast at 3 in the morning and not being able to. :? Guh

Re: Weight Gain With Anti Depressents?
Oh yes! I have gained 20lbs and only taken lexapro for 3 years...Finally getting off it...Please let me know I will get my metabolism back! My doctor said lexapro does slow ur metabolism down. Im so hoping I get back to my old weight...Its weird..I gained it only in my lower stomach and hips....No where else!

Paxil Weight Gain
I just successfully weaned off of Paxil after being on it for 12 years. When I started Paxil, I weighed 120 at 5'6. 12 years later, I weigh 185. My heaviest was 235 pounds. Don't let anyone tell you that weight gain doesn't happen on Paxil. It is now known that the average weight gain on Paxil is anywhere from 60-100 pounds. To those of you who have gained in excess of 60 pounds on Paxil, you're not alone. Although Paxil was a godsend for me, and relieved my agoraphobia and anxiety, 100 pound weight gain is not safe or healthy for your body or mental state. Please, please, try everything else before going on Paxil.

I believe you control what you eat...Pushing your plate away from you may be easier for some people than the other...If I had let myself go for as long as I have used an anti-depressant, I would weight 4,000 pounds...Had that out with myself long ago...In the end I won...And may I add, I am still on 25 mg. of Zoloft daily....
