Last Stages of Oc And Hospice Posted: 02-07-05 01:03am
My grandmother was diagnosed with late
stage ovarian cancer in november. She is
81 and she has opted for hospice care. I
am caring for her 24/7 right now and
neither one of us know what to expect, but
we would like to know. Her stomach is
huge right now, like a woman ready to give
birth. It is causing her discomfort and
her legs and feet have begun swelling.
They are numb and she is loosing the
strength to walk short distances. Her
ankles are giving her some pain too.
Is there anything that should be done to
make her more comfortable in these last
weeks/months? Would draining the fluid
from her stomach on a regular basis be a
good idea? Any advice on what we should
do would be appreciated. Also, any
comments on what to expect from here on
out would be helpful to us too. Thank
you.

My mother had a "poop"bag, and that helped
most of the time, but then we all were in
school and mom thought it would be best if
she stayed in the hosptial so we didnt get
to see her, but she slipped into coma's
most of the time, she was out of it,
because she was on moriphine, the doctors
made sure she was pretty much pain free,
she really lost allot of herself at the
end, she didnt remember anyone, or
anything, sometimes it came back to her
who we were, but not very often, she
couldnt walk or talk or anything for the
longest at the last six months of it, she
only had it for 2 1\2 years so when it hit
that we knew about it it was hard hitting,
when the doctors went in and started doing
thier surgeries and chemo is when the
cancer started to do its spreading and it
spread everywhere, so it really just
depends on where it is with your
grandmother right now and where its going
to. I hope your god takes her with peace
and grace and speed in your and his time
