Q: Doctor's Ground's When Prescribing the Pill?

Hello,
i'm single, 19 years old, and am not sexually active with anyone. I plan to ask my doctor to go on the combined birth control pill next month. I'm extremely nervous, because i'm not sure how my doctor is going to react to my reasoning, because I do not plan on becoming sexually active anytime soon after i'm on the pill. I'm just feeling like it's a good time to start those possible three months of side affects since I have a very light schedule. It's just one thing less I will have to worry about when I do decide to become sexually active if i'm already on it. I did a ton or research, and found out that there are benefits to the pill besides the main purpose, avoiding pregnancy. I will also have lighter and easier periods and a decrease risk of ovarian cancer. Plus, studies have shown that after being on the pill for a year without missing a single pill, the combined pill becomes more accurate, from an average or 99% to 99.9% effective. Can the doctor even prescribe the pill to someone who isn't planning on becoming sexually active anytime soon and simply would like to plan ahead.
Thanks for your time!

Hi beachbabe,

relax when going to see your doctor, you do not need to feel guilty about asking for the pill. You do not need to be sexually active to be on the pill, you are just being responsible, and your doctor will probably applaud you for thinking ahead. I know people who have been prescribed the birth control pill just because they had terribly heavy and irregular periods. Besides you are 19 years old, you are old enough to make a decision such as starting birth control without being questioned about why you want it. Many women take the pill for reasons other than to avoid pregnancy, such as regulating periods, helping to reduce acne, etc. Another benefit to starting the pill before becoming sexually active is that by the time you are ready to become romantically involved, the pill will be in full force and you will be protected. I'd like to say congratulations on being so responsible, if more of us took these preventitive steps we would not have such a big problem with unwanted pregnancies.

Good luck...

Suzy
