smoke smell
I have had this smoke smell for about 2 weeks (off and on). It is annoying since the smell of smoke has always made me sick. The only common denominator I have noticed with other blogs is the "thyroid". Does anyone else have thyroid problems. I was dizzy for 2 weeks (all day long for 2 weeks) and that is the same time my smoke smell started?? Don't know what that means.
Any suggestions
How many people use keflex or something similar and had good results?

OK,

I wanted to write everything that happened to me because maybe my experience will help others.

I was a smoke smeller for about six months half a year ago.

First, Id like to say that my health was not very good previous to the smoke smelling. I had an eczema under my lips, had infections on my throat and had fungus on my tongue.
Then one day I woke up smelling smoke that wasnt there.
I was smelling smoke very heavily for about two weeks. I noticed it was stronger at night -it even woke me up every night for those two weeks-

I came here and it really helped me alot on several facts:

1- it is an allergy.
2- it has something to do with fungus or mold.

I already had fungus on my mouth, white stuff that even caused some irritation so it did not surprised me that I might have had some on my nostrils and ears. Plus, I had ear infections all the time !

The first thing I did:

I went to the drugstore and I bought Probiotics. Probiotics are the ferments found on yogurt (it is not medication, it is a supplement, that means you can take all you want, it is not bad for you) I still take it to this day.

The result of taking probiotics: smoke-smelling was reduced of about 80% ! I continued to smell smoke for several months but very rarely. If I stopped taking the probiotics, the smell would return...and so on..
I also took fluconazol as someone on here adviced. It did help to kill fungus I had on all parts of my body, I was infested with it ! I even had problems digesting food because of it.

BUT.

The problem was that I wasnt attacking the allergy but the consequence of the allergy. The allergy causes the fungus. You can try and kill the fungus all you want but it will keep coming back because the allergy is still there.

I had several allergy tests.
The first one was just for dust and it came out negative.
The second one was for Food and I was allergic to several things, especially olive oil. Then I was given a antihistaminic for the fungus.

I stopped eating the food I was allergic to and took the antihistaminic (chlorphenamine and something else).

The smoke smell NEVER returned.

BUT.

I still had a bit fungus on my mouth, and the infection on the ears was still there, though not as aggressive.
I had a third set of allergy tests and it was all negative, but the soap I used did cause some irritation. That's why the doctor told me to buy hypoallergenic soap, as well as a different product to clean my cloth and bed sheets.

The result: no more fungus on my mouth and I felt the allergy my body had endured for so long was not as strong. I woke up the next day for the first time without fungus on my mouth (after cleaning everything with hypoallergenic products) and a lot less tired after a night of sleep.

However, to this day the infection on the ears is still present.

I take cetirizine (antihistaminic) every day, as well as probiotics, vitamines, and catsclaw (catsclaw helps getting rid of infections and getting sick)

So Im a lot better after almost three years of having troubles because of allergies...

My advice is , to take good care of your body, watch what you eat, take all the allergy tests that you need, do some sport because it helps, and DO NOT give up. Most of the people I know, even some doctors, friends and family think Im imagining the whole thing and that it's psychological. DO NOT let stupid people make you think you're insane.

Im a lot better now that I was two years ago and I will keep pushing to be even better.

Next on my agenda: Im going to see if omeopathy works.

Good luck to everyone.

To this I'de like to add that I took omeopathy that helped alot, this is the formula, you can order it at your local drugstore :

apis 15 ch
apis 17 ch
Kalium Bichromicum 15 ch
Kalium Bichromicum 17 ch

And I also went to the the acupuncturist, he told me I had tendinitis on my sinus, ears... and ... It has done a lot of good as well.. Im 99,9 cured ..I'll keep going a few more times untill I feel 100 per cent.

If you do everything I wrote on these two comments... I can almost garantee you'll be fine... It's been a long dirty road but I think I have arrived to the place I feel free... It's been three years... I hope these two posts help people get well in less than a couple of months...

I know that if someone had told me all of this a long time ago I would have felt very grateful...

Anyway... Ithink it's my last post because I think I am finally cured.

Take care.

yes i thought i was crazy at first too. it all started with a smokey bowling alley...i had this problem back in march and finally was told that i had a bad sinus infection and my ent gave me aggressive steriod therapy and nasonex. well it went away and stayed away. i ended up having sinus surgery for polyps i had. all has been well unitl this passed tuesday! the smoke smell is back! i have not been around it...i just did a round of steriods and antibiotics right after my surgery! ugh! this sucks. i too get the burning feeling, headaches, nausea, my eyes burn and all i do is cough. i have talked to my ent and he has no clue. he said my sinuses are clear, nasal passages are not swollen. so i dont know now. i see my allergist again tomorrow. maybe i am sick again cuz i sure do feel like it again. ears are plugged, i have a productive cough and sinus pain. so much for my surgery helping with all of this. ill keep you updated..

RE: Cigarette smoke/burning dust smell
I am sorry that you are all experiencing this, but I am so glad to learn I am not the only one!! I just emailed my family to show them that I am not losing my mind (at least where this subject is concerned)!

I can't say how long this has been going on for me...six months...a year...longer, but I can say it has gotten much worse lately. It's a daily occurence and can last for minutes to hours, day or night, no matter where I am...in my house, a car, another building, outdoors, etc. I will ask someone in my family if they smell cigarette smoke (that one is now and then) or "burning dust" (that one is most of the time) and they just laugh at me or get irritated and just say "NO".

I had sinus surgery back in 2004; I was diagnosed with Hypothyroid Disease sometime before that (can't remember the year); (also have Crohn's Disease); and told I have Rhinitis and unfortunately my sense of smell has increased tremendously and I can not handle hardly any types of scents/odors. I've also have had migraines off and on for years; stress/tension headaches; sinus headaches; etc. I just had another CT Scan of the head to be sure the sinus was not filled again cause I was having so many headaches. My ENT said it's clear and doesn't understand the headaches (they have since decreased, for the time being). I didn't think to tell him of the "smoky" smell...it wasn't as bad then.

If someone comes up with an answer and a cure I'd love to know it!!

mmk so i saw the allergist..he thinks its still another lingering sinus infection and has ordered another ct scan and pneumococcal antibody titer. he seems to think its a infection b/c i was so well after the sugergy and my ent said all was fine and clear. i go thursday and after i have it i start another dose of prednisone. this it like th 7th dose this year. im so tired of it. the prednisone helps take the smoke smell away for me but obviously after time it comes back. im thinking its a sinus issue since mine have been so cronic for the last year. ill keep you guys posted on it all Rolling Eyes

Allergies?
Allergy tests are totally inaccurate! I used to have migraines and all kind of weird things. I had blood analysis done 25yrs ago that showed 30 something food "sensitivities" Today with in 1/2 an hour of ingesting the minutest amount of garlic I will get a headache behind one eye. Larger amounts full blown migraine! Last migraine was over 10 years ago. the allergist I saw a couple years ago did the skin pokey test and said I have no allergies. Maybe a true allergic reaction I do not have but; I have other symptoms brought on by food- 90% of the cold sores I get are after I accidently got some garlic in my system - How do I know - head ache, cold sore and the ache in my armpits (lymph nodes) I call it a garlic hangover because my body aches. Go see a naturopath or someone that will work out an elimination diet - it restrict foods and only repeat them every four days so your body can recover - Its lengthy process but you may be shocked as to what you may find out. Read what you can about hidden food allergies this is a very condensed 24 year history

Me too...
I had asked my wife to go online to look at symptoms I was having with this smell in my nose for about the last year or so. I had tried to look but couldn't find anything. I had complained to her to I had been smelling this strange smell quite often, almost all the time, about this a very musty smoke smell that would come on. Sometimes I get it for days and sometimes it goes away and comes back for short intervals. It makes me feel nausiated and sick when it happens. Like others on this board I get the smell mostly in buildings and closed in areas. This is so awesome that she found this site. wow!

Same problem here
I first noticed the smell of smoke last winter and blamed it on a faulty heater, but when the AC/HV tech came to service our furnace they found nothing wrong.

The year before I kept smelling sewage in my office, but the plumber did a leak test using a strong candy smelling agent and found nothing.

This year the smoke smelling problem began about six weeks ago. Along with the smell of smoke, my eyes burn and I get burning in my chest. It's driving my wife nuts because she does not smell anything and feels helpless to do anything about it.

I also lost my voice in May for about four weeks, and am still struggling with a weak voice that comes and goes to this day.

At first I blamed the old CRT computer monitors in the downstairs of my home office, but replacing them with LCD screens did not help.

I then purchased an expensive air filter with both HEPA and carbon filters and ionizer feature. Still, it did not help.

Like everyone else the smell comes and goes. My house is right next to the interstate. My downstairs office also runs about 60% humidity. I know fungus has been a real problem for my garden this year, so I am wondering if it is fungus, dust or vehicle emission related.

My ENT doctor said that my vocal cords are slightly enflamed and so are my sinuses, but he did not see any evidence of infection. He feels these may just be simply symptoms of an allergy.

I too am at a lose to figure out what to do next.

Smelling Smoke
Hello, good Smoke smelling people. I am having the problem also,...not smelling cig. smoke but like something is on fire. It is 5:15 am right now, [Texas U.S.A.], and this has happened twice now. I respond the same each time, check our baby in his room, then the rest of the house then outside with no evidence of fire anywhere. I am still searching various sites for info and WILL be back with any answers that may help anyone. The phantom odor thing does interest me tho.

Smelling cigarette smoke that isn't there...
I started smelling it a week or so ago. At first I thought it was coming through ventilation somehow, but I was noticing it all different places where it should not be, places isolated with nobody else there. I have never smoked, or lived with anyone who did.

I did have a bit of a cold about three months ago, followed by not being able to smell anything at all. I could feel the "burn" from a whiff of isopropyl alcohol, yet not smell it. Nothing.

Then I had headaches that happened around the same time every day for about two to three weeks. I was in an isolated area and couldn't see a doctor. Four hundred mg ibuprofen barely made a dent in it. There was a lot of pressure in my face, around the eyes, cheeks and sometimes in my jaw. It stopped about a week before I returned home. My sense of smell returned, slowly at first, but then back to normal.

Never thought much about it, but I am away again, and this smoke smell started and I wonder if it is somehow connected? Could this all be a sinus infection?

I have also had a spot under my eye that the skin gets a bit red and peels and doesn't feel very good.

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one.
I joined this forum just to let you know that I, too, have smelled smoke when there is none and I've never smoked. This has been going on and off with me for about 4 months. I, too, get watery eyes. I think this is the best answer I have found for this. I definitely recommend that we all save what's on this website to our computer for future reference: http://www.healthatoz.com/healthatoz/Atoz/ common/standard/transform.jsp?requestURI=/ healthatoz/Atoz/ency/smelling_disorders.js p

So it's not just me!
Well, I started smelling smoke about two weeks ago. It started right after I picked my car up for servicing so I thought maybe the mechanic had smoked. But now it comes up intermittently at work, in the car, at home, wherever. I went to my GP who tested my sinuses (asked if I had any post-nasal drip - no, pressed all around my sinuses - no pain) and asked about neurological disturbances - none. He gave me a scrip for Nasonex which I've started but I guess it's too early to see any benefits, and asked me to check back in two weeks. He also asked me if my house was old as I guess it could be mould or dust. I do need to dust!

Now here's the embarrassing part. Back 10 years ago when I smoked, I once blew my nose and smelled the phlegm - it smelled of smoke, so I thought "wow, smoking does coat your lungs." But a few weeks ago I blew my nose again, and it smelled of smoke again. Don't know if it means anything.

I do know I'm getting well sick of it.

Smelling Smoke
I was experiencing this symptom and my husband was having sneezing fits. After reading these posts I figured out that the cause might be a cool mist humidifier that had a mold problem.

We threw out the humidifier and a couple of things in the bathroom that seemed a little moldy and voila! no more symptom.

Smell cigarette smoke when none is present
I started smelling cigarette smoke off and on about 4 months ago. I work in a smokefree building and no one in my house smokes but I would smell a strong cigarette smell. I thought I was going nuts. During the holidays it was getting real bad. My eyes would even burn and water. I read in this forum where some of you smelled smoke and went to the doctor and had sinus infections and didn't realize it. I was going to get an appointment for after the holidays to see if I had the same thing, because I was smelling cigarette smoke almost constantly. But between Christmas and New Year's I got a full fledged, no doubt about it sinus infection. I went to a walk-in clinic on New Year's Day and the doctor perscribed a decongestant and an anti-biotic, Avelox. After about the 8th day of Avelox the smell has gone away for good (so far).
