My god I had no idea so many of us suffered from this affliction. Mine seemed to come on me quite suddenly 4 days ago. I awoke thinking the electric fan in my room was going out, making these loud "squeaking" noises. What a shock when I realized the noises were emanating from my own ear! Ever since it's been constant, a steady 'pulsating' sound just like a pulse or heartbeat. Sometimes it seems to reduce a little in intensity, but then starts up again in earnest if i'm at all stressed or rushing around trying to get things done. But nighttime is definitely the worst time for me. It wakes me up about every hour on the hour and I haven't had any decent sleep since it began. I have a Dr. Appt. On mon., 6/5 (earliest he could see me). From my own desperate searching for possible answers on the internet, I can't say that it's left me feeling too encouraged or hopeful i'm afraid. It sounds like many, many cases remain 'unsolved' and unrelieved by modern medicine. Having been for many years into more natural-type therapies myself, does anyone here know of any herbal or homeopathic treatments that actually work? I really hate the thought of being forced to turn to drugs which can have so many bad side effects on the body. But this problem is scary. I've never faced something quite like it before.

Am I Happy!
I've been searching for 'whooshing sounds in left ear' on google and found this site and it's reassured me that i've got anything that could cause me to drop dead at any given moment but on the other hand I must get it checked out.

My problem started a few weeks ago. I've had a bad viral infection which has affected my ears, nose and throat and I thought it was the remnants of that and it would go away.......But it has not!

It's driving me crazy and I was terrified till I came here and i'm now going to take one step at a time and get my doctor to make sure i'm ok however i'm not in panic mode - thank you

Heartbeat Sound In Left Ear
I know this starting message is really old but I was researching this on the internet and came across this. I am 22 years old and have been hearing a swooshing sound in my left ear since the beginning of december (it is now august). I don't know if there is any connection but I have been on ortho evra the birth control patch for about 2 years. I am a healthy person. This sound occurs all the time. I can just be sitting on the couch and it comes. It happens daily. I can push on my neck just below my ear and it stops. In march I asked my ob_gyn if it could be connected to ortho-evra and she just said that it was probably some valve in my heart not shutting and was nothing to worry about. I had laser eye surgery about 3 weeks ago and they noticed that my optic nerve was swollen. They asked if I heard sounds in my ear and told me to go get an mri. I just had an mri today. I notice that a lot of people said that they have it during high stress. I am not stressed now but the sound started before my mom passed away in december. I'm not sure what triggers this but any one with the same symptoms please email me with your findings

Heartbeat Sound In Left Ear
I really thought I was going crazy. This whooshing sound coming from my left ear. It almost sounds like something squeaky that churning. I have to admit that it is a scary sound. I just started taking medication for high blood pressure & i'm not under any more stress. It definitely happens more at night than during the day & usually when i'm eating unhealthy foods (maybe my subconscious mind is talking to me). It's good to know that i'm not the only person in the world who is feeling or has felt this oddity. I'm going to begin a cleanse to see if it will go away. I'll post again with my results.

Thank you to everyone else who has shared on this issue.

Heartbeat In Right Ear
Hello!
Wow, that all sounds quite serious. I ran across this forum while looking for information on symptoms of a different kind but when I saw the topic, I realized that I had experienced this type of thing this past summer. I am a very active and healthy 43 year old female, about to run my 3rd half marathon in a row. I am a manager of a health and fitness centre and I take boxing regularly. I have been told by my doc. That I have very low blood pressure. I have no health issues at all except I experience digestive problem from time to time. Anyway, I experienced this 'heart beat in my right ear' thing for about a week or so this past summer... Only when I would indulge in a few glasses of red wine! After my second glass, there it was.... Strange huh? Soooo, unless red wine causes your blood pressure to rise drastically, or causes anxiety, i'm not sure what the cause would be in my case. Anyone out there have a similar experience?
Just thought i'd share my lame story... :)

Pulsatile Tinnitus Help
I have heard my heart beating in my right ear for over 10 months now & could not find any help anywhere. I went through all the test, went to an ent & he finally said to me "learn to live with it" ! What a jerk !

I went to my chiropractor & he has been adjusting my neck & it seems to be helping. Thank god !
Apparently when you have some vertebrae out of alignment it can cause the pressure & thus the heart beat in the ears.

Hope this might help someone else & good luck to everyone !

God bless :)

Tinnitus Is a Symptom of Thyroid Imbalance Too
I have had the swooshing in my left ear. I started having it shortly after the birth of my second child when I was having frequent night wakings. I started having insomnia, maybe partially because of the swooshing, or was the swooshing because of the stress? I don't know, but I do know that when my thyroid levels were tested, it revealed that I am hypothyroid.

I have noticed that the swooshing seems to be worse when I take less thyroid medication, and possibly when I have a cold. It is most common when I get out of bed at night and then lay down, I hear it for a while. My doctor has not been very attentive to all of my different thyroid-related symptoms, so I haven't gotten as much testing as i'd like to find out more.

Whoohsing & Pulse In Left Ear
I was searching everywhere for information on this symptom, that just started for me a few days ago. Everything I could find mentioned multiple tests and scary possiblities. I also have a twitching in my left eye that started about a week before the wooshing sound in my ear. I, too, notice it worst when I wake up in the morning, what a bizarre feeling. I am debating going to a physician, so far it sounds like the tests do not come up with much information. Anyone had results from these expensive tests?

Crying or Very sad this must be what I have, I have been suffering for about a year now and to be honest I am sat here at 2.30 am with a 5yr old that needs me to be up early and I am in tears as I don't, cant hear this anymore.
I cant bring myself to sleep or lie down as I dont want to be in bed with that noise anymore.
I think I am going mad it feels like it. I have to turn my neck in this really strange way just for it to go for a few minutes but it is so uncomfortable I cant stay like it for very long.

I was diagnosed last year with a large polyp up the right side of my nose, do you think it is a coincidence that it all happened last year or could this lump be the cause?

I am quite finally at the end of my rope. Sad

Pounding / Pressure In Ears
Last september I had 3 days of very bad dizziness. I went to the emergency room and I was told that my ear drums were buldging. They told me it was probably head congestion related to alergies. I have had constant sinus problems for about 10 years, so I thought this may be an answer. I made an appointment with an ent. By this time my dizziness had stopped but I felt pressure/liquid in my ears. He was convinced that my problem was alergies and started me on a nasal steroid, nasacort aq calrinex d. Went back in 2 weeks, no change. He did a sinus ct, it was clear. He then had me take an oral steroid pack, medrol. No change...He was very surprised and had me go for a brain mri and a ct of my ears - everything normal. He then put me on a 12 day oral steroid, no change. Each time he would check my ears and he didn't see any fluid but I was feeling constant pressure occasional wooziness. He then gave me a combination nose spray of nasacort aq astelin, no change. The last thing he gave me was a straight decongestant. The pressure is still there but the wooziness seems to be happening less than before. He basically gave up on trying to fix my problem. Now, I have been sick for the past 5 days with a head cold. I went to by family doctor. She checked my right ear and told me it appeared to be "sucked in". I asked her what that means and she told me that because of my sinus congestion, it was causing a vacuum inside my head. How could me sinus ct come back showing "clear" and there be so much congestion that my ear drum is being sucked in??? This morning I woke up with a pounding in my right ear. It isn't constant but it does happen about 2-3 times per minute. I am very frustrated and if anyone can offer advise from experiencing a similar situation I would really appreciate it.

I have been dealing with pulsatile tinnitus in my left ear since February 2006. I saw an ENT in April 2006 and he prescribed me Nasonex. He told me to use Nasonex for 3 months and I visited him again in July. By July, I was still hearing the noises and they were getting worse. At this time he numbed and looked up my nose and said I had a deviated septum and found that I had negative pressure in my ear after doing a pressure test, and said both of these were causing the noises in my ear. I had surgery to correct the deviated septum and had a tube put in my left ear in November 2006. Unfortunately, the noises in my left ear got progressively worse and when I would tell him this he would say, "Oh, it will go away in about two months." Well, at the beginning of January 2007 it was still getting worse and he told me it would go away in about 6 months and he wanted to try removing the tube. He also wanted to prescribe ear drops for my "bad days", and when I told him everyday is a bad day, he chuckled and walked away saying nothing to me. During this whole year he never addressed the pulsing noise I hear. I asked him if there was a name for it and he couldn't give me any answers. He never ordered any MRIs, CTs, nothing. I no longer trusted him and went to another ENT who told me immediately I had pulsatile tinnitus and ordered an MRI/MRA/MRV. I had to have the tube removed so it wouldn't block anything on the scans before they were done. I received a call back the same day I got the tests done from my ENT saying a thrombosis was found in my brain and I need to see a neurologist immediately. I saw a neurologist the next day and he said I have a lateral sinus thrombosis on the right side which is a blood clot in a vein and it's extremely rare. He said this could be the cause of the noises in the left ear even though the clot is on the right side due to the way sound travels through one's brain. After answering my doctor's questions, he said the most likely cause of the clot was not receiving antibiotics in a timely manner when I had a horrible sinus infection that lasted about 3-4 weeks in January 2006. The noises started soon after I had that sinus infection. My doctor at the time in Jan. 2006 didn't prescribe antibiotics, only told me to take over the counter medicines. I was hospitalized and started on an IV anti-coagulant (Heparin). I was in the hospital from Feb. 2 through Feb. 11 2007 and now I'm on an anti-coagulant in pill form, coumadin. Unfortunately, the noises are still getting worse. They can go 5-6 hours non-stop, stop for about 10 minutes, and start back up again for several hours. My neurologist now believes there is something else going on since it's getting worse. I had an EEG last week, but haven't received the results yet. He wanted to test for partial seizures. Every once in awhile I will feel weird like I'm in a dream, like it's not real, and I will see lots of small sparklies in my line of vision, then I'll be fine. Not sure if this is related or not. Another thing they want to test for is Meniere's Disease. I want to suggest to my doctor to get a scan of my neck and check the carotid artery. I'm supposed to talk to him again today. So, as I'm typing this I can hear the noises and it's driving me crazy. It's hard to focus a lot of times and I can't relax. I can even hear it over the TV sometimes because it will swoosh so loud. I took it for granted the fact that I could do something so simple like lay down in a quiet room and relax, and I haven't had a moment like that in a year. I wish everyone the best with their doctors finding out what's causing your noises because I understand fully what you're going through.

Okay, so its almost 2 years later and I still have this swooshing heartbeat noise in my ear. I did make several appointments with the Ear Nose and Throat (ENT). I had several MRIs and a CT scan which did not reveal anything.

I did find out why it goes away when I press on my neck below my ear. That is where your corotid artery is located. So when I press on my artery it stops for a second. They still arent sure why
I am searching for something that works. I get so frustrated. One doctor actually said that its probably nothing and it should be okay....without checking! I really hope its nothing dangerous but its definately not normal for me to just start hearing this noise one day. Something has to CAUSE it. I wonder why docotors look at us like we are crazy? I always tell them that at least Im hearing a heartbeat and not voices! LoL.
Our insurance has changed, but this is really getting annoying after 3 years of this problem I think I will make an appointment at the ENT in Charlotte. I hoped that it would go away on is own but it hasn't. I might also try that earwax thing too! Please pm me for further discussion.

heartbeat heard in right ear
I am a 35 year old female who just started to experience this maybe a few weeks ago. At first, it would only last for like 3 seconds and go away. I wouldn't get it again for several hours, sometimes days. This past weekend, I started to get it more often and it lasted longer then 3 seconds, more like 5- 10 minutes. Today is the worst. I have had it for about two hours now and I'm still experiencing this as I write. Back in the very beginning of Aug 07', I experienced a few dizzy spells and went to the doctor. She checked my ears, no infections and diagnosed me with Vertigo. Since I only had a few episodes, my doctor said to give it some time to run it's course. Could take as long as 4-6 weeks. I didn't get have anymore spinning episodes, but felt very stressed out and anxious. I went to my ob/gyn and discussed everything with her. We then really believed it was anxiety and stress was prescribed Lexapro. To a point I think it helps, but ever since the summer I still feel "off" and not like myself. Now, I am having this beating in my right ear and am feeling really stressed out again....could all this be related? I feel for anybody who has or is still going through this. I would love to hear from anybody with any kind of help or information.

Same here
I am 6 months pregnent and have started to hear my own heart beat and it is driving me crazy. Sometimes it gets so long I have trouble hearing. The dotor told me the thing the doctor had to suggest was since when you are pregent your blood is working harder that is most likely why I'm hearing it so much now.
Has anyone found something that works to make it go away?

Help!
I have been hearing my heartbeat in my ear since I was pregnant. My Doctor told me not to worry about it. My daughter is almost 2 now. I went to the Doctor the other day and have to have an MRI next week. I am scared to death about it. What are the chances it is something bad? He did not tell me...

Tinnitus is rather benign. Doctors don't know what causes ringing in the ears or heartbeat sensations in the ears, exactly. I experience it during quiet moments, but have come to feel that it's comforting rather than scary. We can sense our pulse all over our body. Sit for 2-3 minutes and concentrate on your throat, for example. Sooner or later, you can feel the pulse there, too.
