Q: Allergies Or Sinus

I suffered long horrible recurring allergy attacks this past july 4th week which happened out of the blue. I was in and out of the er with my throat closing and I was covered with hives, large red patches that looked like burns and welts. I ended up in intensive care for two days. The cause was never determined. I was put on steroids and allergy meds. I had follow-up allergy test and responded positive to many environmental pollutants.

Since adding vitamins to my diet, my allergies have gotten much better and i'm almost back to normal. With that said, here's the problem. I have had the oddest sensation of my sinuses being extremely clear and a dripping feeling going down the back of my throat. I saw my doctor and he wasn't much help. I have also had gastritis for about 1 1/2 years and take medication for it. The doctor said it could be sinuses or it could be acid and sent me home with no answers. I really don't know what to do. If it is sinuses, does anyone have any suggestions on what could be causing the extreme clearness and dripping sensation in the back of my throat? It's very uncomfortable. Thank you.

Sinus Sensations
Hi,

as someone who has experienced sinus problems of various degree, and allergies, the best I can figure from your description of a "clear"feeling in sinuses and a "dripping" down your throat (post nasal drip?)sounds suspiciously like the result of a very powerful nasal antihystimine. Are you using flonase or a nasal spray of any type? You said you are using "vitamins". Are they the standard "daily multiple" type or perhaps an herbal blend? I have some experience and knowledge regarding the latter. If you wish to respond or think I am on to something, I am the post about "pulsatile tinnitus".

Hope you feel better--r

Sinus Sensation Reply
Thank you for responding to my post. I was given steroids on many occasions since july right up until september along with zyrtek and benedryl. Once the allergies started to calm down, my doctor gave me 25 mg. Of hydroxyzine to take as needed up to 4 x a day. To be honest, I first noticed the extremely clear breathing sensation after taking the zyrtek for a while, so I stopped taking it. My doctor said that sometimes there is a residual dryness sensation in the sinuses after taking antihistamines and suggested a saline spray to moisturize. I notice the problem seems to get "active" when the weather is going to change (ie: snow or rain coming). Wierd.

The vitamins I mentioned are just the standard multi-vitamine along with vitamine c, e, b12 and calcium which I feel have helped my immuine system. Any input you may have would be appreciated. I find this problem frustrating.

I also think that since there are many chambers to the sinuses, you can have mucus in them without them blocking your airways. Two months ago I had something similar.. But with severe sinus headaches on top of it. I could breathe fine, but had stuff running down the back of my throat and a bad sinus pressure. Went to the doc and it was a sinus infection and the antibiotics cleared it right up. I don't think you have an infection otherwise you would have the bad pressure as well, but this time of year can play havoc on anyone's sinuses!
