Q: Inner Ear Infection?

I was in the colorado river much of the time for 3 days. I ended up getting an ear ache that eventually went away. Then it came back again and I went to the doctor. The pain was unbearable. They gave me ear drops (neomycin and polymyxin b sulfates and hydrocortisone otic solution usp) and I took them according to directions for 4 or 5 days. My infection still resided and I went to the emergency room exactly 7 days later to get some more advice. He just told me to continue taking the drops. Well, this was over the summer and my infection remains dormant deep in my ear and sometimes flares up, like it is right now. If I sleep with my bad ear toward the ceiling, problems can arise. If I take a shower and some slight moisture remains and I sleep with my ear up, the infection will flare. If I go surf, more than likely, I will flare.
Does anyone have a solution for this infection?

It sounds like you need to get yourself to an ear nose throat doctor. You may have an infection in your inner ear behind where the drops can get to. My friend currently has this. He's been on several antibiotics and drops and nothing will get rid of the infection. He is going to an ent in a few weeks.
On a side note.. Did you go rafting on the river? I did that a few years ago.. I love the grand canyon. I want to go back so bad!!!

No, I was wakeboarding, and it was about 106 in the shade, so we were constantly in the water. Also, this was by yuma.
The first doctor put me on some apparently powerful antibiotics, but I guess that wasn't good enough.

Wakeboarding is fun.. I know what you mean about that heat..
I would definitely go to an ent. They may have to perform a procedure to get back into your ear and get to the infection itself. (it's not surgery, I understand they do it right in the office and it doesn't hurt much.. So it's probably not what it sounds like)..

Hi there it might be a good idea to go to a ent Dr. I am no Dr. But it sounds familiar to something I get quite a bit, it is called swimmers ear, when you get water in your ear and it does not drain correctly and it is dark in your ear and with the moisture, you get like a fungus, you can go out and buy the stuff for the swimmers ear or you can mix up a little rubbing alchohol with a little vinegar and take a clean syringe, put some of the mixture in a syringe and pu some in your ear a couple tines a day and it has sure helped me, again, I am no dr,. This is just what helps me and we are all different.
Sincerely,
sandy

Yeah, thats what I thought it might be. But it is too deep for me to do anything about it with just drops. I'm planning on seeing an ent next week.
Any idea what prices run?
