Mj,
i've not been on here in a while... Glad to hear your colonoscopy went okay & they found nothing wrong. Let us know how the hida scan goes. Like donna mentioned-- it may not give you an answer either. My hida scan came back normal as well....

a hida scan is a test done by nuclear medicine physician. They inject you intravenously with a radioactive isotope. Then you lay under a gamma camera, which is a camera that senses radioactivity. It checks for the obstruction of the bile ducts, a diseased gallbladder, and bile leaks.

Desperate to Get Answers

Hi again:
my hida scan results came back today as normal.......I am feeling very depressed about it because I was really hoping to have a definitive answer. Thank goodness for you, donna and heather, and reading these postings or I may have just gone to bed and stayed there forever.
I continue to experience bloating, pain, discomfort from any constricting clothing around my middle. I even felt stabbing pain (at gallbladder area) when I bent over to pick something up on the bottom shelf at walmart. I simply do not know what else could be causing this pain other than the gallbladder. I've had endoscopy, ultrasound, ct scan with contrast, mri, gynecological studies, blood tests (liver enzymes are the only abnormality) and now hida scan.
I went to a university hospital for the colonoscopy and the gastroenterologist who saw me is a liver and biliary specialist. I asked him if he would see me (it ordinarily takes months to get an appointment with a specialist at the university hospital). Anyway, he said I should e-mail him and he would set up an appointment for me to see him when I return from my daughter's in california. Yes, I am going to california. I can just as easily be in pain on the west coast as on the east coast. I am carrying all my test results with me just in case something additional occurs.
I will be checking in as usual. Thanks again for your interest and encouragement. I truly mean that. If it were not for reading about all your experiences, I think I would feel totally insane by now. I still think my gallbladder is causing my symptoms!

Mj,
sorry your hida scan didn't give you the results you expected, but don't give up! Mine came back normal and I was depressed about that as well. After all other leads were exhausted they finally decided that it was my gb to blame and removed it. Keep plugging away and you will get what you want...Be persistent! Tell the Dr.S what you want and don't let them tell you what they think...Alot of them just don't care and will brush your symptoms off as ibs or acid reflux(been there, done that).
Anyways, enough of my rambling lol.
Thanks for the update and hope to hear good news from this new Dr.

Don't Givve Up Hope
Posted: 05-15-05 18:53pm

Hi guys! I just wanted to let you all know that I went through three years of hell just to find out it was my gallbladder. I had 2 hida scans (first was 54% and the second was 93%) a colonoscopy, endoscopy, cat scan and ultra sound. I was getting so discouraged. All doctors kept telling me that I had ibs. Well, I knew that was bs. After persistence, I made an appointment with my surgeon and then my prayers were answered. She said that there are so many people who have gallbladder symptoms but tests show up normal. So she does an "exploratory laporoscopy" to check out the gallbladder and ends up usually taking it out. That way the health insurance company will pay for it. I found out that mine was really enlarged and was fused to my abdominal wall. I didn't even take the vicodin prescribed because it wasn't that bad. I felt a difference that night of my surgery. All I could do was cry. Please, all of you, don't give up hope. Don't let them blame ibs. Good luck to all of you. Tiffany

New Here Help
Posted: 05-17-05 09:07am

Well my story is long but I try to make it short as I can. It all started in feb, a night out with the girls which I dont drink very often. I woke up with what I thought was the worse hangover in my life. Come to find out, it wasnt a hangover at all. A week later the symtoms just got worse. Went to doctor first time in 19 years because the pain was so bad, went through blood work, ultra sound, and a hida scan and they decided to take my gallbladder out april 21st. Well here it is almost a month later and im worse than ever!!!! My attacks have worsen, my pain in my back kills, my chest feels like im having a heart attack, and when I went back to my family doc yesterday he said maybe it ibs. Yeah whatever, hes setting me up with a gi, but cant get in to see him until mid august. So in the mean time what am I suppose to do. I havent been in this much pain in my life, besides having children. Oh I forgot to mention ever since my gallbladder surery I have blow outs of diarreha, cant leave the house because I have to stay very close to a bathroom. Anyone else out there having the same problem. I have three children and starting to feel like a very bad mother because ive been pretty much laying on my couch in pain for months!!

Something Different to Think About...
Posted: 05-19-05 23:58pm

I stumbled upon this thread while researching something else but was so struck by the similarites of my situation to many others that I feel compelled to share my experience. I had stabbing pain under my rib cage that radiated around to my back for months. It felt like I was being poked through with a searing hot rod. It would make me feel nauseous from the pain. I don't want to make you think i'm trying to simplify your symptoms or suggest that you are suffering from what I was. But what I found out was that I had a rib "out" and all I needed to do, and still need to do when it is acting up, is get an adjustment from my chiropractor. Before you give up, and before you go under the knife or get lots of invasive tests, I would suggest you visit a reputable chiropractor and see if that will help you. Don't assume it's an internal organ problem. Pain can be very deceptive sometimes. Good luck!

Re: 13 Year Old With Pain

my 13 year old daughter is going thru the same things you are mentioning. Er 3 times, 3 ultrasounds, 1 ct scan. All normal. Just had the hida last thursday and we're still waiting on results. Something tells me that it will be normal too. I just don't know what to do anymore. It is so hard to see my child lying there shaking from pain. It lasts from 2 to 4 hours at a time. The gi doctor says its ibs, but I just can't imagine that, the pain is in the upper right area under the ribs. Sometimes goes into her back. Sometimes its right next to her belly button on the right side and into her back.

Maybe it is the ibs I just don't know...The pain is so bad and she takes the bentyl three times a day 40 mgs...So I think if it was ibs the bentyl would be working. My husband even brings it to her everyday at school so that she doesn't miss a dose.

If anyone has any other suggestions on something I can ask about, any other tests to request, please let me know.

She is missing so much school and she's an honor student, i'm so worried that she may be held back...She's due to start high school next year.

Please, any help.......Thanks

Re: 9 Year Old With Pain
Posted: 06-10-05 12:02pm

My daughter has been experiencing pain on her right side for over 2 years now. By our family doctor we were told that it was basically pyschological. The pediatrician ran every test but could not come up with anything. She would cry herself to sleep every night after being in pain for at least 4 - 6 hours - same time every night. She was sent to a pediatric gastroenterologist. He told us that it is muscle spasms. He put her on bextra for about 6 months - that only worked half the time. Then he decided to put her on 10 mg of amitripyline every night before bed. That has "covered up" her pain for the most part but she still doesn't feel good every evening. The specialist says she will not have the pain once she hits puberty. He thinks it might be a pinched nerve while she is growing so quickly. She had a abdominal cat scan resently and that showed that she has fat in her liver - she is not obese. She deals with reflux now, headaches alot and just generally not feeling well every evening. We do see that she reacts to fattier foods like mcdonald's, pizza, spaghetti, hotdogs, etc. I am getting very tired of giving her a medication that is just covering up her pain. She did have a hida scan about a year and a half ago and that test came back "inconclusive". I am not sure what that means.
Desperate for help!!! Thank you

You all must insist that your Dr. Does the blood test for celiac disease! Sounds like what it could be. I have it and I had all those same symptoms and now am on a gluten-free diet and much better! Good luck!

Pain Under Right Rib, Upper Epigastic Pain Too
Posted: 07-09-05 18:29pm

I have read all your entries (donna, heather, guest, and hope that you are all doing well.
I have been dealing with pain under my rib and upper epigastric pain for about a year; just the last 4 months with the rib pain. First my dr told me it was non ulcer dyspepsia, then he told me it was ibs. I had an appendectomy in march. They told me it was unrelated to my stomach problems now. Since january I have lost 15 pounds, cannot eat anything without getting a stomach ache, bloated, full feeling and sometimes nausea with vomiting. It is worse at night.
I have had a ab ct--that show a thickening of the pancreas, blood work that came back normal, a hida scan--normal, ab ultrasound--normal, upperendoscopy--normal. I am at my wits end. I just want to be able to eat without pain and discomfort.

I met with a surgeon and she recommended an ercp--i also met with another gi--2nd opinion and he is reviewing my tests and will call me next week.
Hoping for some results
i am convinced it is something to do with my gall bladdar--????

Sounds like gb to me!! Mine came out last march... Doing good just constipated... All my tests were normal... Just had all the 'classic' gb symptoms... My hida was 39%.. Which is above normal but not that much above normal.... No more nausea or pain.. Little in the morning in my sternum / back area... I'm on nexium for gastric reflux..

Hope your tests show something! I feel your pain.. It stinks!!!!

Tjd,

some people have all the gb testing done, all come back normal and it ends up still being the gb to blame--usually inflamed and full of scar tissue from "attacks".
All my tests came back normal--except the ultrasound(gb was inflamed with cholesterol polyps). I got mine out in march and am still having nausea--but that is from my battle with gastritis. I don't have any diarrhea(thankfully), but I do get nauseous if I eat too many fatty, greasy, spicy foods in one day. Other than that all is well.

Keep us posted on your progress! Any questions, feel free to ask.

Donna

Having a Really Bad Pain
Posted: 08-03-05 08:53am

Hello everyone, about three weeks ago I my right hand's index and middle fingers started to hurt. I started to believe it could be an arthritis. But all of sudden I noticed a tender spot under my right rib cage just right under the breast bone. Next, the feeling of bubble crawling and pressure. It is always from left to right direction. I found another tender spot on the right side of my rib under the armpit. Today,i feel a pain on the back of rib cage.It is really agonizing. I have been having a lot of gas in my stomach since this problem started and I don't have any diarrhea( I hope I spelled it right). Anyway, I didn't go to doctor yet. I read so many comments posted by people on this site and others. I found out a lot of people got no reasonable answer from the doctors. I am so confused. I can't believe my life is turning upside down. I have four kids and I go to school. I even messed up on my final test last night which I had an a all this time.I wish you all good luck.God bless!

Surgeon Vs. Gastro Doc
Posted: 08-06-05 09:51am

I am so confused , and dont know who to believe. I have gerd and my gastro doc has had me on protein pump inhibiters for the last 5 years. ( I try to see how long I can go with out it , but must take it religously every 24 hours). I herniated my bellybutton at work and was sent to a surgeon. I had a ventral hernia that was repaired july 18th. Since I had a history of gerd the surgeon had me get an ultrasound on the gallbladder. It was normal. Then he had me get a hidascan cck. The scan was 32.5%. The tracer could be seen in the common bile duct and gallbladder within 15 minutes and within the small bowel by 45 minutes. I asked the sugeon what this means and he said I need to have the gallbladder removed. He also states that I might have good results after the removal of gb that I might not have a need to take the protein pump inhibitor anymore. ( that would be just awesome). So the surgeon explained to me that the gastroenterologist would probably disagree with his findings and would recommend not to have the gb taken out and continue on the medication. I am so confused as what to do. I do have an appointment with the gastro doc before the surgey which is scheduled for august 29th ,05. Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated as I need real life, been there ,done that answers.
Thanking you in advance !!!
