Heather and donna,
what is the result of your surgeries? Did
you become normal after the surgery?
Thanks

I had dull aches under my ribs after the

then when I got home the aches started.

Sod-sphincter of Oddi Dysfunctin Posted: 12-12-05 14:42pm
I have read many of your posts and just
want to give you another perspective.
After years of occasional pain, two pg's
with severe heartburn, my appendix and
gall bladder removed.... I continued to
have severe pain after my second child.
I would go to er after 1-2 hours of
constant pain in upper right side seemed
to start in my back and surround my whole
upper body with a terrible tightening
feeling, spasms accompanied it. After
continued blood work with elevated liver
enzymes and sometimes pancreas enzymes
also elevated, I was sent to a specialist
who did an ercp and found sphincter of
oddi dysfunction. It is a problem with
the opening of one's bile duct. After
three surgeries in one year, it has been
almost a full year and feeling better than
in years. The surgeon goes through your
mouth, doing an ercp, then dilates the
bile duct and puts a stent in that will
pass naturally in a week or so. Worth
asking your physician about this
diagnosis.

Gallbladder Removal Posted: 02-07-06 13:59pm
I've had problems for about a year now,
but mine come and go so sporadically i've
never looked into it. I can go weeks
without pains. They have been coming more
often now and more severe. It starts out
as a pain like indigestion/heartburn where
my rib cage meets. Then spreads. And
goes through to my back in the same area.
It is extremely painful. It does not
relate to what I eat. I can go hours or
over the course of an evening and not have
the pain til afternoon without eating
anything else. These attacks can last up
to 6 hours. Literally laying rolling
around in agony. I have a 4 year old and
a 1.5 year old so going to the doctor or
emergency room isn't always that easy.
I finally went to urgent care during one
bout and the doctor saw where I was
holding myself at mid rib cage area to
under the right rib cage and sent me to
the hospital saying he thought it was my
gallbladder. The hospital took my blood
and my pains started subsiding. They said
they also thought it was my gallbladder
but my blood tests came back fine. I had
an ultrasound of my gallbladder 2 days
later and found nothing. No stones, no
sludge and no thickening of the lining.
But my family doctor also believed it was
still my gallbladder so I had the
gallbladder scan (hida) done. It showed
that my gallbladder didn't start working
as quickly as it should and it took longer
for it to dump than usual, but it was
still within the normal range. Since that
scan i've had another attack that sent me
to the emergency room and another that
almost sent me there but finally subsided.
My husband was out of town during my last
attack and it was in the middle of the
night so I had to suffer through the night
and had someone come watch the children
early in the morning so I could go to the
e.R. They had to give me demerol which
didn't touch the pain and then gave me
toradol which finally subsided my pain.
They took blood again and just told me to
keep my appointment with the specialist
and gave me a script of vicodin and said
to come back in if the pain was too
unbearable.
My family doctor sent me to the specialist
who is also a surgeon and I walked in and
he handed me gallbladder surgery
paperwork. He said that recommended I
have my gallbladder removed. He said I
was classic gallbladder symptoms, but my
gallbladder does start working and does
eventually dump so that is the only
difference. He says he can only be 80%
sure that it is my gallbladder. I asked
if there were other tests that can be done
to find something else and he said I was
no symptomatic of anything else that it
could be in that area. If it were liver I
would be in pain all the time and if it
were ulcer related I would have pains
after eating. So I am now scheduled to
have my gallbladder removed on february
20th.
I'm alittle leary of having an organ
removed that he's not 100% sure will take
care of my problems. He said it was up to
me and I could just do nothing but I would
be taking the chance of continuing to have
to go to the emergency room and taking
pain medicines and eventually it could
just stop working all together and having
to have emergency surgery and possibly not
having the luxury of having it done
laproscopically and more pain and more
recovery time.
I feel like a walking time bomb, never
knowing when i'll have an attack and i'm
not able to take care of my children
during an attack (it is that severe) and
i'm afraid the pain medicine will knock me
out or something. The pains i'm talking
about I rank right up there with 8
centimeters dialated labor contractions.
That never go away for the full 6 hours.
Has anyone else had the classic
gallbladder symptoms like me but them
coming sporadically like this? And has
anyone had their gallbladder removed
without it being emergency or stones that
caused it to be removed?

I have the same thing except I had 3
agonizing 'attacks'. 2 this past summer
followed by a month of flu-like symptoms
including the dull ache on right side that
occasionally turns from ache to pressure
to sometimes pain. The third time (end
of jan) it happened I have all the same
above symptoms plus when I breath in
deeply I feel a spot on my back that's
sore (almost like a small sore muscle but
when pressed it doesn't hurt). I too
have a toddler and it's very difficult
with all of the symptoms and the
exhaustion. All of my tests have come
back normal including hida scan yesterday.
I have an appt today with gi doctor to
discuss what to do next and i'm going to
ask what the numerical % was.
To respond to your statement about the
surgery. I have read online several
natural surgery alternatives that include
things like fruit juices or olive oil
regimens. Couldn't hurt to try. I've
been hesistant only because I want to have
a diagnosis before I treat anything so I
could gauge any progress. Good luck.
I'd like to hear what you decide to do and
your results.

the Pain Under Right Ribs Posted: 02-17-06 14:44pm
This all just strated for me but it sounds
exactly like me. Pain in my lowerd right
rib cage. Its hard for me to swallow and
when I breathe in I get to a certain point
and it feels like someone has a blunt
object and is jamming it into some organ
in there. I cant hardly stand up all way
or stretch. And yesterday along with the
four days prior to that I kept having a
pain in my top right collar bone.... I
feel like I am falling apart at the seams
and I am only 20 yearsold!!! Any
suggestions as to how to alleviate these
pains? I am popping ibuprofen 200mg like
m&m's. Its getting ridiculous! And I
have no health insurance so I can't go to
a regular doctor....So I need some type of
feed back. Please someone respond!

Right Chest Wall Pain Posted: 02-25-06 16:54pm
This is my first posting, having read all
your emails. I am desperate, and in my
3rd week off work. I have severe pain
under the right rib cage - literally
covering the whole area from just under
the breast to the very bottom rib,
continuing right to the mid back. It
aches constantly, waking me at night as
well, and worses upon any movement and
breathing. I also cannot pass my hand
along the area as there is tremendous
pressure - like a balloon about to burst.
I have had a chest x-ray - clear. And an
u/s - liver, gallbladder, and kidney, all
normal. I was worried I might have a
'dead' right kidney and am thankful that
is not the case. Currently, I am on
bedrest with rx of advil (600 mg t.I.D),
and the tylenol 2 (2 - 3 per day). As
mentioned above, this is now day 14, and I
am going into week 3 absent from the
office. I did have some pain and
pressure point tenderness for about one
month prior, which I ignored and treated
with otc aspirin-base painkillers. 14
days ago, I went for a short walk to the
bank, and that was it. I arrived home in
extreme discomfort so as to render me
non-functional. The current working dx is
chest wall inflammation. I plan to treat
aggressivly with nsaids and hope for the
best. In the meantime, monday am looms
ahead and I don't know that I will make it
... Any advice or thoughts would be most
appreciated. Like mss mugsyann below, I
can't stretch or anything either. And it
is ony one side -
thanks very much

i had no stones to speak of & all
tests came out positive, but after surgery
found out my gb was inflamed with
adhesions all over it & cholesterol
polyps inside. I was also in a great deal
of pain & had been nauseated for
several years before that almost on a
daily basis. Unless you are having pain
& are sick all the time, i'd hesitate
to rush into surgery.

Please, any help.......Thanks[/quote]
i just had to respond to you, my heart
goes out to you and your family because we
lived through the same exact fears and
uncertainty. Our daughter was at the
emergency room numerous times, had every
test known, ct scans, ultrasounds, pap
smears, and finally 3 doctors told us she
just had an eating disorder because they
couldn't figure anything else out. She
was a freshman in high school and missed a
month all put together before she passed
out in class and we had enough. We drove
2 hours to st. Louis to cardinal glennon
hospital emergency room. We saw a
wonderful doctor there named sara barlow,
who within 20 minutes diagnosed her with
ib and gerd. It seemed too simple. She
put our daughter on nexium 2 times a day
and celexa to desensitise the stomach and
a blander diet. She is now a senior
getting ready to graduate and doing
fantastic. Hang in there. God bless
you. :d

Similar Symptoms Only Gb Has Been Gone For Several Years... Posted: 05-16-06 13:59pm
Hi, I was wondering if anyone else has
been checked for other problems? I went
in for routine blood work prior to my
annual physical. A week later, I received
a call from the doctor wanting me to come
back in for more blood tests because my
liver test came back "extremely high".
Since then, I have had a hepatitis
screening and ultrasound, which all came
back negative. I have more blood work
this thursday and then possibly an
appointment with a specialist. I am at
wits end because I have had low grade
fevers and this sharp pain in my right rib
cage for over a year. The last ge thought
it was scar tissue or blocked bile ducts,
which tests proved negative. This is the
first time I have had liver tests come
back abnormal. The pain and nausea
doesn't come and go...It's always there.
The painful area is about the size of my
open hand. I cry quite often from the
sheer helplessness I feel. I know I am
hurting, and something has to be causing
it. Even if it is bad news, I want to
know something. I am tired of being poked
and prodded, as this makes the pain even
worse. Can anyone relate to this, and, if
so, what was the diagnosis and outcome?
Thanks for all of the previous postings on
here because at least i'm not the only who
feels nuts or helpless...
My husband and I have been working with a
"holistic healer". Not sure what her
title is but she did get a degree.
Anyway, we did a colon cleanse and then a
liver cleanse. The liver cleanse yielded
very interesting results. It cleans out
your gallbladder as well. I don't know
how many stones I passed (in the stool)
but I started out with little green
pea-size stones. Then I ended up passing
ones that were the size of a gumball.
Then to my surprise I had one 2 inches
long by 1 inch wide!! It did not hurt to
come out. These were in my body!!! I
never had pain but I am hearing too many
stories of people getting their
gallbladders removed because of too many
stones and here I was able to do it
naturally!!! Docs won't tell you that.
Now I am no expert and should you try it
then I suggest you research before you do
it. Type in "liver cleanse" in google.
It is not the most pleasurable thing on
the earth but it beats pain and definitely
surgery. You may be surprised what comes
out. I am going to do another one soon.

of pain is I am not so freaked out now but

in the centre of my right rib it even
radiates around my right side to the back
makes my breasts hurt and all of my chest
front part including my breast can be sore
to push down on it usually comes and goes
and usually happens more when I sit down
for long periods but boy oh boy I am just
hoping it isn't something bad ok well I

Wow... Posted: 08-04-07 14:54pm
I found this forum last night and I am so
amazed at the similarities of symptoms!!
Here's my story... I had a diseased gall
bladder and ended up having it removed in
late December of last year. I have had
minor pains off and on since then in my
upper right quadrant but nothing that
lasts or is too intense (I attributed it
to scar tissue or something). Last Sunday
morning I woke up feeling fine then on the
way to church started having slightly
intense stabbing/seizing pain in the same
place(feels like just below my lowest
right rib) and also in my back. I went to
the ER because it felt so similar to the
pains I had in December and I didn't want
another 5 day hospital stay if it could be
avoided. Well, all my bloodwork came back
normal with the exception of slightly
elevated bilirubin. I was sent home with a
prescription for "stomach cramps." Since
when do you have stomach cramps under your
rib?!
At any rate, the pain has increased all
week and I feel slightly ill and sometimes
nauseous. I ended up back at the ER
Thursday night with more pain and a slight
fever. They did the same blood tests,
filled me with morphine and sent me home.
I tried just a general practitioner who
prescribed more anti-stomach-cramping
stuff and I have felt SO sick ever since I
started taking them. I am scheduled for an
ultrasound on Tuesday morning and I have
an appointment with my surgeon on
Wednesday...
I have also noticed pain when I press on
the area just right and sliiightly
anterior of my belly button that it
produces a good amount of pain.
A doctor friend of mine is thoroughly
convinced that I have inflammation of the
common bile duct and that a week of cypro
would clear everything out... Not sure,
but it sounds like an idea.
Anybody have any thoughts on this?

I Am Not Alone Posted: 08-29-07 12:54pm
I am so relieved to hear that I am not
alone in this battle. It has been almost 2
months, with all of the same symptoms as
everyone lists. I am loosing weight pretty
fast and I am hungry! But if I eat I am
miserable. In the last two weeks I have
had an ultrasound - normal, Colonscopy and
upper endoscopy - normal. On Tuesday I
went in for a Hida Scan - still pending
results. It is not like I want something
to be wrong, but I just want them to find
out what it is. The more normal results
come back the more I feel like they think
it is in my head. They doctors keep
mentioning that I am only 23, and that my
symptoms sound like gall bladder problem
but I am to young. I am so tires of
hearing that. I am tired of being
miserable, and I know the odds of my Hida
Scan coming back normal are pretty high. I
am not gonna give up until I feel better
again. Good luck to all.

Test Results Posted: 08-30-07 15:14pm
The hida scan came back normal.....Now
what. The only results that have not come
back are the biopsies from the endoscopy.
I am sure they will probably come back
normal too. I am not sure where to go from
here. The doc said that the next step was
to start me on a regimen of medicine if
all of the tests pass. I am not excited
about having to take a bunch of
medication....and still not actually
knowing what the problem is. I am not sure
if I want find another doctor at a more
well know hosptial or stick with the
"farmer" hospital I am currently going to.
Anyone have any words of wisom here?

I am having my hida scan next thursday. I
am in so much pain and every test has come
out normal?? If you are still in severe
pain does your GI doctor send you to a
surgeon anyway or let you go right on with
the pain?
