Same Pain As All of You
Posted: 10-08-05 14:46pm

Hi, everyone! I have read all 7 pages of this forum and can't believe we all suffer or have suffered these same symptoms. My problems started over 6 weeks ago and so far I have no results that make sense to me. I am covince it is my gallbladder too. I had a sonogram that showed no stones. Next the gastro did an endoscopy and said I had acid reflux. Have been on protonix for four weeks and yes I have to say the severe heartburn I had is not there, but I have right rib cage pain that I can't sleep at night. Similar to others it feel like there is something inside of there pulling or kicking me. I go to drs. On 10/10. He was too busy to see me this week and I know back a few weeks ago he mention the hida scan, although I am allergic to the ivp dye, so not sure if this dye is the same or not. He mention they might have to sedate me. I too can not eat much. Oatmeal, toast, and crackers are the only foods that I can handle. Am losing weight steady, but slowly. With the last month about 10 lbs. Lol, that is the only up side to feeling like crap! I just don't think acid reflux could cause the severe pain I am experiencing under my right rib cage. I also have bad upper right back and shoulder pain constantly. I use the hydroculator nightly to ease the back pain. I am open to any suggestions and am thankful that there are others who understand this pain. Will keep you all in my thoughts. Looking forward to better days ahead!

I must admit it does sound like gallbladder pain. There is something called sludge that you can get in your gallbladder, that can also cause pain, or it could be that your gb just isnt working properly. I would wait & see how the other test results come back.

Same As All of You

Hi all, my name is hannah. I have been having some of the pains that you describe since march of 2002. Mine have got worse with time here are some of my symptoms:

+ pain in lower right quadrant (to include the lower rib cage and upper abdomen)
+ stabbing pain in right shoulder
+ pain is worse when I take deep breaths, laugh, sit in certain positions and lie down on my back or right side
+ I also feel as one of you described like there is an area I can't feel, a void in the pain, like a small rock is there just to the lower left of my rib cage.

I have noticed a cycle to my pain and it normally lasts for up to 10 days following my period (thats when its at its worst). Its not there during my period.

I have had ct scans done of my abdomen and pelvis which were normal apart from a small cyst in right kidney (although have been told this is not the source of the pain). Also had pelvic and gall bladder ultrasound done. Had a chest x-ray. Bloods done for kidneys and liver all are normal. Have seen a gynocologist too who was very unhelpful and told me I might just be depressed...........More like frustrated!

I have recently come off taking the pill as I was worried that this was hiding symptoms. Am still waiting to evaluate this over the next few months.

Does anyone else have similar problems or any ideas? I have read about a condition called endometriosis that can occur in the diaphram, liver etc which give off similar symptoms!?

Thanks and I hope you are all doing better today with your pain!

Suffering the Same Pains
Posted: 10-25-05 09:07am

I am a 35 yr old male or avarage health. I was "diagnosed" with ibs a few years ago due to regular bloating, indigestion and diorea. Although the"ibs" has improved a little, in the last 2 yrs I have also been experiancing very, very sharp burning pains under my lower left rib. The pain is worse at night if I roll over suddenly in bed it can trigger the most excrutiating pain that lasts 2-3 seconds followed by a much duller pain that can last a day or so. Sometimes I can also get a pulsating sensation in my stomach that can physicaly be seen. I also get persistant back and shoulder pain (similar to cramp) on the right side if I drive for more than an hour. I have had various checks for liver function, gall stones, blood pressure etc all came out ok. I feel cheated that I must live with this undiagnosed pain, can anyone put me on the right path??

Hey all, im an 18 year old male from the uk:

im not sure if any of your problems may be the same as mine; I will try to explain anyway:

for about 6 years now, I have had a lump where the ribcage comes together (upside down v part) its a solid lump, tho I can move it (it hurts) and I can even get my finger underneath it if I tried, but it goes up under my ribcage so it extends a lot further.

I have not spoken to anyone about this in 6 years, not my family or a doctor.

It has caused me no problems over these 6 years until the last month or so, over the last month; whenever I have gone to bed and have been lying down for a while I just start getting a dull ache all around my stomach and abdomen area, sort of feel lke stomach cramps, it is really painful and has made me feel sick on a few occasions (even was sick once)

i have looked around on the net and am starting to think that it may be liver cancer? I know this is not the same as what you guys are talking about, but it is really starting to scare me now, im scared of going to the doctor because im afraid of what I will hear.

Do any of you guys have a lump inbetween your ribcage? Or is it just me?

Im hoping it is not cancer as I am assuming (as iv had this lump for 6 years+) that it may not be possible to get rid of.

Any ideas? (i think I might go to the doctors sometime this week because I can no longer sleep without taking paracetemol before hand)

Not trying to be funny here. I think its about time you went to see a Dr. Something like this, especially a lump, should not be left for 6 yrs without seeing your Dr. It may be something very simple, like a hernia, or something more serious. Either way get yourself to your family dr asap!

Dom, I would keep pushing the drs for more tests until they diagnose your problem. They cannot leave you in pain like that. Go back to your dr asap & push for answers good luck!

Lower Right Rib Pain
Posted: 11-01-05 09:56am

Oops, just noticed I wrote "left" rib cage, it is actually the right side as everyone else. Thanks for the concern, I know it sounds crazy but last time I got it checked out I was on that whole never ending carousel of referal after referal and came out months later with no answer, sooo frustrating. I was hoping to at least get some feed back so I could tell the doctors where to start looking. I cant believe so many people are suffering with similar simptoms and no answers!!! I forgot to mention last time that when the pain is dull it feels like a constant weak electrical current is running through the area under my right rib.

I am the 18 year old from the uk again, I have now booked a doctors appointment for tomorow, my mom rang up the doctors while I was at work and explained that I had been having stomach pains in the night that was keeping me awake and waking me up.

It usually takes ages to get an appointment but when my mom explained and said it had been happening for a week and half (tho it has been going on for a month but my mom didnt know that) the doctor on the phone said these exact words "it might be acute... He needs to see a doctor as soon as possible" so she has booked me in for tomorow morning.

That leads me to the conclusion that it may be acute appendicitis, the lump im not sure whether it is meant to be there or not, I checked my brother to see if he had 1 and he sort of has but it is not as big or as close to the surface as mine; so im still unsure, I will ask the doctor about that as well tomorow.

I have had these pains for just over a month now, if it is acute appendicitis, what sort of chance is there of my appendix bursting as iv left this so long?

Hello 18 year old from the uk. Your appendix is on the lower right side, not to far above your hip bone. If this is where your achy pain is, then it's a possibility. But it could also be your bowels. If the pain is more in the center, could be something as simple as heartburn or a stomach ulcer. If the pain is in the upper right underneath your rib, could be your gallbladder. I also had aching in the center of my stomach between the ribs & above my navel from gallbladder disease, as well as the right side. As far as the lump, I don't have any between the ribs as you describe, nor does my husband. I'm glad your getting to a Dr...The aching/nausea & the lump is not something to be let go.

Best thing you can do is assume the best, until you know otherwise. Many times it's far less worse, then what we imagine.

Hope all goes well at your appointment tomorrow.

Dom1102,
i'm the original poster of this thread. I went through test after test, before they figured out it was my gallbladder. Alot of times the dr's just don't know for sure what's going on & so have you go through all these tests to rule out what could be the causes. My personal experience...I had ultra sounds, hida scan, numerous blood tests for liver function, 2 cat scans, barium enema, upper endoscope, colonoscopy. They saw nothing on any of these tests that would directly point to what was causing all the pain I was now in & the previous years of nausea. The dr's finally decided it was my gallbladder. So in april of this year I had surgery. It was definitely my gallbladder. It was inflamed with adhesion's on it.

From personal experience, the pain you describe sounds like it could be your gallbladder. I had also been diagnosed a few years back with ibs. Since surgery, I don't have any of the problems they told me where from ibs.

Best feedback I can give...Tell the dr's you want these tests run on you. I saw a surgeon & a gastroenterologist. These two dr's together got all the tests run on me & came to the conclusion as to what my problem was. As hard as it was to go through all the tests...It was worth it in the end. I'm glad I got rid of that nasty gallbladder.

Blue streak
thanks for that, makes me feel like I was right all along. Adheasions, what on earth are they? What were the tests (if any) that actually influenced their decision to remove it. Seems crazy that they can seem to diagnose it using all the tests we have both had. Got the pains again last night, it always shocks me at just how painful it can be. Funny thing is my "ibs" has improved allot lately. I am going to call the doctor anyway and get it looked at again.

The dictionaries definition for adhesion's are " the abnormal union of separate tissue surfaces by new fibrous tissue resulting from an inflammatory process" surgeon told me they formed because I had had prolonged inflammation. He also said they were all over my gallbladder & had a hard time detaching my gallbladder from my liver. Nasty.

It was more that the tests showed what it wasn't & since my symptoms were continually getting worse, from their experience decided it must be my gallbladder. I definitely was nervous, since their was no concrete evidence...But it definitely was my gb. That was a huge relief to know I had made the right decision in proceeding with surgery.

Hope your dr's appt goes well.

For the past three months I have been getting this throbbing pain under my last rib on the right side. It's close to the center, if I go left from the point of pain I would be right under my sternum. Anyways, i've been to one Dr. But he didn't know squat. He said it was a pulled muscle. I one day experimented with melox and it made mee feel a whole lot better. I think its an ulcer of the duodium(cant spell). I'm gonna hit a gi specialist as soon as I can ill post his diagnosis.

I Am Already Minus My Gb Now What Could It Be?
Posted: 11-30-05 23:34pm

I had by gb taken out 7 1/2 years ago. Since then about mabey 2-3years i've started having pain on the right side right under my lowest rib I feel it in my back under my shoulder blade as well. Similar to inital attack pain but not as sever. Went to the dr then and he said " oh it's probably an inflamed rib or pulled muscle" well it went away and then it came back on and off. Lately i've had the pain on and off but more on. Especially when I feel stressed cough, yell or run. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly apreciated. Thanks

Its worth getting the dr to do some more tests. There can be problems with your bile duct following gb surgery, so I would advise you to go back & discuss it with your dr

i'm 8 months post op & started experiencing similar pains about 5/6 months post op. Stress really seems to bring on the pain. My dr said possibly sphincter of oddi dysfunction.
