Hida Scan Normal...pain Under Right Rib? Posted: 01-25-05 03:00am
I am so confused & scared... So i've
got a few questions. Hope these symptoms
makes sense to someone out there.
January 4- went to er for severe pain in
right upper quadrant. Also had pain in
right arm that radiated up into shoulder,
neck & jaw. They sent me home saying
it was just heartburn. General doctor
figured it was my gallbladder & also
that I have ulcers, since I have frequent
heartburn/sour stomach. Had two more
attacks thursday january 13, at 2am &
then around 7 pm. After attack had dull
achy heavy feeling below right rib. Now
the pain is just there most of the time,
achy...Very uncomfortable...More so when I
set. Thigh joints hurt for two days
following. Noticed pale stools for a few
days after these attacks as well, now back
to normal. Have felt lightheaded since
attack that sent me to the er. Blood
pressure has been lower then usual for me,
but i've also not been leaving the house
much, feel like crud most the time.
Tired, fatigued light head. This mostly
starts at night 6/7 pm. Light headed
feelings even there when lying down to go
to bed... Feels like my head is swimming.
Er blood tests showed slightly elevated
liver enzymes. Second blood test a week
later showed liver enzymes down from
previous week, but still elevated.
Ultrasound revealed a small polyp in
gallbladder 3,4mm. No stones. Had a
hida scan last thursday, came back normal.
My general doctor is sending me to
consult with a surgeon.
My questions are-- if my gallbladder is
working normally, no stones, just a small
polyp...What could be causing the pain
under my lower right rib? Also what could
cause slightly elevated liver enzymes?
Thanks so much for the help...

Hida Scan Normal....pain Under Right Ribs.. Posted: 01-25-05 05:22am
Hi heather... I could have written your
post. I'm in the same boat you are in.
Only my fam doctor is sending me to a
gastroenterologist first. My ultrasound
came back normal..No stones... Just had
the hida last thur and it was normal...
Ughhhh I can't eat hardly anything... I
wake up in pain until I get vertical for
awhile... Then am okay til I eat. Am
better since I started eating less fat.
Went to applebee's tonight and ate off
their weight watchers part of their menu
and it about did me in... I get that
crazy feeling in my head like you are
describing. This crap has been going on
for over 8 yrs now but has just recently
went up high under the ribs...Ribs feel
bruised! The pain has always been at
waist level before. Now I get chest
pains with a feeling of being stabbed
clear through to my back and the knife is
being twisted. I have the appt with the
gastro doc next tues... Hope i'm not
given the runaround!
Good luck... I would like to know what
happens after you talk to the surgeon.

Hida Scan Normal....pain Under Right Ribs.. Posted: 01-25-05 16:34pm
Today pain has become more pronounced
underneath & to the bottom & side
of my right ribs. Also having pain in my
back directly parallel to the rib pain.
Been having pains in the center of my
stomach as well. Have been trying to just
lay down & rest, but when I do my
whole body feels like it
pulsating/vibrating. Heads still feeling
the same way setting here typing. Very
disconcerting... Has anyone else had this
happen? Am really more afraid of all my
symptoms being my liver, because of the
slightly elevated enzymes from my blood
test & not my gallbladder...Since all
tests for the gallbladder came back normal
other then the small polyp.
Thanks,
heather

Heather I 'guest' that posted right above
you. We sound like twins. I'm so sick
today i'm about ready to head to the er.
Wrote a nurse friend of mine that used to
work the er at the hosp I would go to.
Asked her what would happen if I go, she's
not read her email yet. I woke up
soooooo nauseous and just really 'off'
feeling. I had a small bowl of chicken
noodle soup and it made my chest/rib/back
pain hurt. I swear I can feel a lump
right up where my ribs come together, is
that the sternum?? I have never felt
this ill in my life. If I lie down I get
nauseated but it comes in waves. Every 5
to 10 minutes. I haven't thrown up but
i've never been a barfer even when pg both
times. I'm really getting scared. Don't
know if I can make it another week before
seeing the gastro doc.
I hate how doctors just keep putting you
off all the time. You just wonder what
to do. :(

Haredresserd,
boy we sure do sound alike. I felt like
headed to the er a few times & telling
them to admit me & do what you gotta'
do to figure this craziness out. It's
terrible & worse not knowing. Am
anxious to see what the surgeon says
tomorrow. I really want to see a gastro
dr myself before anything else happens. I
to am not a barfer...But man this
nauseation is no fun. Soup is about all I
can eat as well. Won't even drive my car,
afraid of passing out because feeling so
lightheaded at times. This is my first
day feeling sick to my stomach though.
The pain was bad enough. Feel so sapped
of energy.
Hope all goes well with you & if it
gets too bad...Do get yourself to the
er...

Well well I have a 17 yr old daughter who
is a very smart girl in school and she
hasn't been in school since jan , she's in
alot of pain and she has problems with her
ribcage , sore sides, back , last week I
took her to the er and they gave her an
inhalation . Now I feel she's being a
guinea pig for them because they don't
know what to do with her . She's had
upper gi, 3 ultrsounds, the light put down
, biopsies , she's on pentaloc pills for
her stomach . The biopies came back ok ,
her stomach is inflamed , and she's got
alot of acid in her esophagus
. She does vomit the odd day if she
eats, she's at the point where if she eats
she will get sick and if she doesn't eat
she will get sick . She finds if she
sits too long she gets sore and if she
moves around too much she gets sore there
seems to be no happy medium with her at
all.Her pain is all over her chest cavity
can anyone help me before I take a
nervous breakdown over this

I'm no expert, but if her stomach is
inflamed it sounds like it could be
gastritis... The symptoms include...
Upper abdominal discomfort or pain.
Nausea. Vomiting. Diarrhoea. Bad taste
in the mouth. Loss of appetite.
Indigestion.
Or possibly gastroesophageal reflux
disease, or gerd for short. Acid reflux
from these conditions can cause feelings
of chest pain. The four major symptoms of
gerd are--heartburn (uncomfortable,
rising, burning sensation behind the
breastbone). Regurgitation of gastric
acid or sour contents into the mouth.
Difficult and/or painful swallowing.
Chest pain.

I think I might have answered you on
another board(the name sounds familiar),
but I also have gb polyps and an inflammed
gb wall. Did your ultrasound show any
inflammation or thickening of the gb wall?
That could be causing the pain you are
feeling. I suffer from awful nausea
everyday(some days better than others),
pain under right rib cage that goes to my
back between shoulder blades, bloating,
fatigue and dizziness. My hida scan came
back normal as well. I have had low blood
pressure ever since I was pregnant with my
son and these gb problems started a year
and a half ago. I am scheduled to have my
gb removed on the 29th. Can't wait for
that day!
hope you get some relief soon :(

Holy crippen - are you guys in my head or
something???..
I've been suffering for about 2 years
now...With the following symptoms..
- pain in rib cage - feeling like someone
took a baseball bat to me..
- waking up in pain in the mornings -
with a hard pain in the back of my
ribcage.. Sometimes going through to the
front.
- occasional sharp stabbing pains in
front right hand side
- right front ribcage pain
- numb spot in right side of abdomen, I
can feel it when sitting down, and
sometimes after eating, I can sort of feel
the food, but can't feel my stomach ?
Does that make sense
- pain up into right side of
shoulderblaces
- the pain in the front right hand side,
goes down to the front middle, and
sometimes to the front bottom right hand
sides too
- throbbing like a toothache, just in the
rib cage ( or so it seems ) right side of
back.. In the middle
relief from getting up from horizontal
from the pain when I get up in the
morning... And usually after i've had
something to eat or drink.. But , then
it's back a couple of hours later
dont'usually feel pain when I go to bed,
but this last week, its more or less
constant pain, from all directions
i've found myself researching "impacted
colon" & all the symptoms & wonder
whether we're all blaming gallbladder when
maybe it could be something else?..

Hi interested*party,
i know my problems are definitely not
anything to do with my colon. I had an
colonscopy & a barium enema & all
was fine in that area... Also had an
upper endoscope, so it's not my esophagus
or stomach, duodenum etc... Have had cat
scan's & ultra sounds,...Etc etc.
Etc... All things point to my gb...
Hope you've been to the dr with al the
pain your suffering.

Hi donna,
yes I do believe you posted a reply to me
on another board. My ultra sound from a
couple months ago did not show any
inflammation or wall thickening. I do
have a second ultrasound before I see the
surgeon monday to schedule surgery. Found
out the first ultrasound they did, they
should have rolled me around to see if the
polyp is actually a stone... Wondering at
this point if my gb will show
inflammation. No let up with the
symptoms. It just keeps getting worse.
Now to top it all off-- I constantly feel
like there's cramping or burning in
between my ribs over my stomach. Not like
typical heart-burn, it's a more strange
feeling. Uggg it's been horrible the
last few days. At one point today felt
like someone was squeezing my insides in
the area... Ever had this?
Hope your surgery goes well on the 29th.
You were supposed to have it on the
22nd...Is that right?

Hi blue streak,
yes I was suppose to have my surgery the
22nd but they bumped me to the 29th(this
darn waiting is killing me!!).
Seems like everything your going through I
go through as well!! Last night I was up
till about 3 am with what felt like
someone punched me in the stomach, and the
usual ache under right rib cage, and
through my back...Must have been that tiny
piece of hotdog I indulged in
when I had the ultrasound done the tech.
Made me do "log rolls" while she checked
my gb and kidneys. She took her sweet
time around the gb area so I kind of
figured something was up. I have
basically been living off of crackers and
dry cereal and once in a while I indulge
but pay for it later. When surgery day
comes I will be running to get this thing
outta me. Can't wait!!
let us know the results of your ultrasound
and surgeon appt.! Hopefully you get some
answers!

Donna,
that feeling of being punched in the
gut...That's a good way to describe it.
Do you have problems with the pain at
times even when you don't eat anything
bad? I do at times & it so
frustrating. The surgeon's office has me
on emergancy call in for monday. He was
on vacation this past week, of course
& I had an acute attack... I think
the way they talked, they will schedule my
surgery when I see him...& it will
probably be next week. I'll have to do
some pre-op testing this week. Boy i'm
nervous, but it's only getting worse &
needs to be done...
Keep us posted on how things go for you
this week,
heather

Yes I do get the pains even without eating
anything. I can tell mine is just getting
worse as last night a glass of water gave
me pain!
I will definately keep you posted on how
it goes. May be a few days but will try.

Donna,
I see the surgeon tomorrow. Was hoping
for today... Had my second ultrasound
this morning & they rolled me. The
tech asked me when the last ultrasound
was... 2.5 months ago. So i'm a bit
nervous as to what she may have seen....
Won't know the results for a couple
days... I got chest pain after I left
though, but they've now subsided... I
think her pushing on that area aggravated
my gb.... :(
will be thinking of you tomorrow...

Heather,
that's great! At least your getting
somewhere now!
I had dull aches under my ribs after the
ultrasound . I was fine during it but
then when I got home the aches started.
Tomorrows the "big day" ...A little
nervous but more anxious to get this
diseased old thing outta there.
Will keep ya posted on how it goes.
Good luck on your meeting with the
surgeon!

Donna,
wish I would have stuck with this surgeon
a couple months ago when I first met with
him... I could have had this darn thing
outta' me already...But oh no I had to be
stubborn... :) I kept telling myself,
it's not my gb...No no no... Kinda' hard
to deny at this point...
Take care,

13 Year Old With Pain Posted: 03-28-05 23:37pm
My 13 year old daughter is going thru the
same things you are mentioning. Er 3
times, 3 ultrasounds, 1 ct scan. All
normal. Just had the hida last thursday
and we're still waiting on results.
Something tells me that it will be normal
too. I just don't know what to do
anymore. It is so hard to see my child
lying there shaking from pain. It lasts
from 2 to 4 hours at a time. The gi
doctor says its ibs, but I just can't
imagine that, the pain is in the upper
right area under the ribs. Sometimes
goes into her back. Sometimes its right
next to her belly button on the right side
and into her back.
Maybe it is the ibs I just don't
know...The pain is so bad and she takes
the bentyl three times a day 40 mgs...So I
think if it was ibs the bentyl would be
working. My husband even brings it to
her everyday at school so that she doesn't
miss a dose.
If anyone has any other suggestions on
something I can ask about, any other tests
to request, please let me know.
She is missing so much school and she's an
honor student, i'm so worried that she may
be held back...She's due to start high
school next year.
Please, any help.......Thanks

Hi blue_streak!
Yes, i've seen the doctors, and they've
referred me to the hospital here to have
the colonoscopy and the endoscopy.. And
yes, I know exactly what you mean by the
constant aching under the right rib
cage..
Like you - I have periods where the pain
is gone, and life goes on as usual, but
when it's there it's there .. And it's
getting harder & harder to ignore...
The thing that freaks me out, is that the
pain is there, but I still have the numb
spot... It feels like I have a baby's
foot jammed in between my ribs & my
waistline.. Does that make sense..
Jfern.. I get pains next to my
belly-button too... But not as often..
:(.. I hope your daughter finds the help
she needs - cnronic pain is no picnic..
