I have the uvula extended (not swallen) and touching the top part of tongue since 3 days now. Its not hurting when I eat or drink , the only obstruction is when I speak.
Alcohol isnt the problem for sure, I had a bad cold with sore throat for the past week and when I started taking antibiotics my condition got better and at the same time this uvula problem appeared.
I have to say that the two previous nights I woke with a very dry throat, so dehydration could be a the problem. However drinking lots of water does not seem to make it better. So if it persists for the fourth day I might be obliged to see a doctor.
I woke up this morning thinking I had terrible nasal drainage. I had difficulty breathing because my airway was blocked. It was uvula. It was as big as my thumb and felt like it was going down the back of my throat. I couldn't see the tip of it. I went to the doctor and she gave me a shot of cortisone and benadryl. I suffer from allergies so we both assumed that was the cause, and I probably had slept with my mouth open last night. Over the course of the day it's less swollen. Ice cream helps A LOT. This happened last year, but this episode was much worse. I'll be sure to keep Halls on hand!
I went out got hammered smoked some pot woke up and had the same feeling. Naturally thinking oh it''s probably just because of the bad things I did to my body last night and my uvula is angry with me and being lazy haha. I remember i''ve had it happen b4 and it def goes away after a day of two maybe even less. As I type this in my super hungover state that I''m in i do wish that it would go away right now though.
I have the same thing although i have got mine after surgy, apparently i had a tube down my throat making it dry when i woke up i was fine but 1 day after this ''lump'' thing occured 4 days and i still have it i can bearly talk because when i do it chokes me and makes me gag....... please help aye its not good especially when you have a sore tummy from an appendix operation
I have asthma and had had several attacks. Two nights ago I woke up in the middle of the night with the lump in my throat and not being able to breathe. I panicked and went to the ER and was told my Uvula was swollen. The doctor told me not to worry gave me a shot of steriods and pecid. Told me to drink water and gargle with salt water. 2 days later I feel much better and the lump feeling is gone. Also said the this is a high allergy season and recommended Zytrec for post nasal drip. Thanks to everyone for their comments. After reading this forum I feel much better.
I woke up this morning with the same darn problem of not being able to swallow properly and not being able to talk properly without it hurting so much. I've had this thing before back in April was the last time and then it followed with alot of coughing due to I have bronchial asthma. I at times just want this hanging thing to be taken out.
Hello everyone. Iâm so happy that I found other cases of this disease, but not that it happened. I have this problem since 2007 and it is still happening. I just found something interesting with reasons of which this may happened, but yet no treatment. What I tried as treatment is to take some sodium bicarbonate because this is an antiacid (because I think this is related to my stomach problems). I have never tried ice-cream or cold water but that should work also because the veins from uvula will shrink at cold, but donât drink too much, better keep your uvula in your mouth with that cold water. Keep in mind that this may be an unknown disease as no one knows an exact reason/treatment.
Also, if your uvula gets too big, I recommend you to go to an hospital as fast as you can because it can block your breathing as it happened to me the first time i got this.
Also, I think that if this isn't happening because of my stomach problems, it may because of allergic problems to all chemicals in food which exist nowadays.
Now to find a cure i want to try something so I ask kindly for your support in answering some questions:
1. What did you eat before this to happened and what is your usual habits related to food(what do you eat usually )
2. Do you have fever when this happened?
3. Are you overweight?
4. Do you often have flu, a cold, or other breathing diseases?
5. Do you have problems with your stomach? I mean do you have ulcer or hyperacidity or other stuff like that?
6. Were you in a stressfully period before this?
Please reply me with answers so I can try to find an exact reason why this relapse. Thank you. I promise if I find anything I will post it right away.
Hello all⦠Iâve had this âthroat issueâ for years. As a child my uvula would enlarge after a bad cold however, during my pregnancy it became a condition. I had extreme acid reflux during this time (I also began snoring). When I told my OB-GYN that I had a lump in my throat he suggested that it was only pressure and that it would go away after childbirth. It didnât. This is off topic, but I didnât have a good relationship with my doctor, so after giving birth I never went back to see him. Over the years, the sensation would come and go, so I learned to live with it. Dumb, I know. Sometimes Iâd feel nothing. Other times I feel like Iâd have a thumb in my throat. Always annoying.
At one point I began to suspect that I had cancer, but Iâve this thing for 14 years. I got used to seeing my uvula sitting on the back of tongue and I never mentioned it to any other doctor. What recently scared the hell out of me was that sometimes when I doze off (sitting up) and I wake up gagging like something is stuck in my airway passage. And I can't breath for a few seconds. The issue can no longer be ignored, so I'm searching for a doctor pronto. In the meantime, I will use some of these temporary remedies. Some how I donât think that they will work. But I'm more than willing to have it removed now. Finding this thread is a God send. Itâs nice to know that you are not alone in your fears.
it isn't cancer,it might be an alergic reaction but I don't know to what so please try to help me out by answering to these questions,I might find the answer we all are looking for. As I said before,I have this problem too and first time it happend it blocked my breathing too. Doctors seem to know nothing about this, atleast where I live.(they told me they had never seen such a think) I even becamed a subject for the student which were in that hospital for training.
i spent half an hour this morning hacking up what i thought was mucus lodged in the back of my throat, reasonable since its happened before, but to no avail. maybe two hours later i tried again because i could still feel it back there, so i looked in the mirror and realized that it was my uvula, and that it had stretched to twice its normal size.
i just had my wisdom teeth pulled five days ago and have been on oxycodone since then, so i don't know if it might be a reaction to that or not. i doubt i'm dehydrated as i've been drinking more water lately than i usually do. i'm not overweight, i sleep on my belly, and don't drink or smoke.
ive tried gargling with salt water, coating it with salt/pepper, and drinking more water, none of which have helped. currently i'm drinking a mint/nettle tea which may help but i have yet to see any results.
i'm thankful for everything i've read on here, but this is terrible. every time i swallow its like a big loogie sliding down the back of my throat, which is also sore from all the hacking i did this morning.
Yeah, this is the second day I've woken up to a sore throat and my uvula touching my tongue. I was also running a slight fever this morning, but that went away. The soreness goes away around noon, but the uvula touching the back of my tongue does not go away. I figure it's probably allergies and will go away on it's own in another couple of days but I have to admit I'm worried that I may have to go see the doctor about it. During the evenings it's not bad at all (just annoying); I was even able to go on a run last night and had no problems with my throat.
I've personally been taking cough & sore throat Tylenol along with Zyrtec(probably not advised to take both, but I'm getting sick of this thing), drinking tons of orange juice, taking Vitamin-C drops, and garggling salt water.
ok im new here but my uvula is hanging down to my mouth i cant drink eat and im afraid ill choke on it in my sleep
i was fine the whole day i had some pizza soda then i went to bed at around 10:00 and then i woke up at around 4:30 am withh the problem im only 15 so i really dont wanna do surgery but if anyone can halp me it would be awsome
This has been an ongoing problem for me for years, and it has led to me having problems being able to burp. It almost feels like I have food or air caught in my throat. I went to the doctor and he said uvula irritations are common, but because I frequently have bronchitis, the constant coughing has permanently elongated it. It's just a simple matter of it being trimmed. They used to anesthetize the area and snip it, put in a stitch or two and that was that. Now they use lasers. I need to have it done, and when I can afford it I will. But to those of you suffering with a temporary problem, here are some things that I found helps. No carbonated drinks. The need to burp just irritates it more, no caffeine products, no smoking, and mild saltwater rinses help ease the "dry ache" as well as saline, non-medicated nose sprays, (they help keep the throat moist). Avoid milk when it is flared up as milk coats your throat and makes the "lump" sensation worse. Keep acid reflux under control and if it lasts for more than a few days see your doctor. I am not a doctor, these are things my doctor advised me of and a few things I found on my own. To Johnnybip, you're on the right track with a lot of your ideas and questions. Acid reflux does seem to have a connection, as well as snoring (which I don't do for some reason). Snoring can cause it, and it can be caused by snoring. Twofold there. Drinking alcohol links to it as well probably because alcohol can cause acid reflux and it dehydrates you. Asthma can also trigger bouts with it. When I first started having MINOR problems with it, my mother suggested using a little alum powder dissolved in a 1/4 cup of water. Gargle with half and swallow the other half. It did work, but that's because alum causes tissue to shrink somewhat. I don't recommend doing that though. It may have risks. I don't know. Anyway there it is. lol
So, I am researching this myself, because although I am 44 years old, I have suddenly developed the same problem. Mine however, started as a sudden feeling that I was getting sick, slight sore throat that got worse within a few hours, fever as high as 102, headache, body aches, fatigue. The next day I spent in bed, taking theraflu and sleeping. Each night I woke up with intense pain in my throat, but early this morning, I felt the horrible feeling that something was stuck in my throat, but my throat is too sore to cough or clear it. I shined a light down my throat, and my uvula is swollen grotesquely and my throat is fire engine red. I went to Doc when they opened, she took one look and said "Oh, that's Strep!" She then took a quick culture, which came back negative (they often are wrong, I've had strep before)but felt strongly that it was indeed strep, so prescribed me antibiotics. I asked how I night swallow them, and she gave me a shot of a steroid to reduce the swelling. It did, but only a little. My uvula is now swelling right back up, and my throat is more swollen and now has pus pockets (so strep seems likely). I am scared to go to sleep! What if this thing keeps getting bigger?????
One thing I noticed in all the blogs, seems most of us suffer from asthma, allergies, or bronchial problems.
I've had this happen to me once before, and the doctors gave me antibiotics and pain meds. It took me DAYS before the swelling went down. Then, it happened to me again last night. My husband called an ambulance. The EMTs treated it as an allergic reaction, gave me a shot at my house and another one on the way to the ER. The hospital gave me another one after I got there and started me on steroids. I'm feeling almost 100% today. They've prescribed me an EpiPen to carry with me at all times. In my case it appears to be an allergic reaction.
1. What did you eat before this to happened and what is your usual habits related to food(what do you eat usually ): I ate a stir fry with turkey, rice and spinach
2. Do you have fever when this happened? No
3. Are you overweight? No
4. Do you often have flu, a cold, or other breathing diseases? Yes
5. Do you have problems with your stomach? I mean do you have ulcer or hyperacidity or other stuff like that? No
6. Were you in a stressfully period before this? Am experiencing a high amount of stress in my life at this point, BUT I was sound asleep and woke up gagging on my uvula at about 1am (gagging so bad that I actually threw up)So, at the time of the occurrence I was sound asleep (both times!).
7. Do you snore? Some when I first fall asleep, but according to my spouse I don't snore for the rest of the night after that.
8. Do you usually have a sore throat? only when I'm having post nasal drip from allergies, cold, sinus infections, etc. Not on a regular basis.
Possible cause of enlarged uvula - reaction to chemicals?
Hi everyone, I woke with this problem today..i was prescribed antibiotics and told it was an infection. My mum thinks it is an allergic reaction. This might sound strange but i just bought a new pair of shoes for work that have a very strong chemical smell, which i think comes from the soles. The first time i ever had this prolem i slept with these shoes in my room by my bed. My mother could smell the shoe smell before entering my room! and she thinks chemicals such as possibly formaldehyde could be responsible for this reaction since i've never had it before and there was nothing unusual or different i did that day (apart from the new shoes being by my bed - which apparently can contain formaldehyde as glue especially if made in china!)
Thanks to all,
I'm 55 years old and never experienced anything like this. I woke up this morning and felt like I had a lugee to hok up. When I couldn't quite get it, I looked in the mirror & saw my uvula was red & huge. I was even able to reach down my throat and touch it, roll it around... it was odd because normally I would choke getting that close. Also, there was blood on my finger. Scared me. It does feel like there a lump there. So I guess I'll spend the day trying remedies from this thread. Wish me luck since there are very few posted
