enlarged uvula
ok, a few things that might help that people freaking out. i got the problem on saturday after i burnt my uvula on some hot chips and drank until i passed out and then threw up the following morning and then later on sunday it was in extreme pain and i went to see a GP on tuesday and he had no fkn idea he was useless so i went to see a better GP who KNEW immediately what was wrong, today on thursday and he told me to do the following things:

1. gargle difflam anti-inflammatory antiseptic (gargling salt water helps)
2. have ibprofen
3. rest, have lots of water, and even cold food can help (ice cream yay)

- i also had a form of phrangitis (inflammation of osophagus) *BUT if the roof of your mouth (boney area is specifically sore then DEFINATELY go to GP because he checked that out and said that is serious if it is) - prob best to go to a competant GP anyway

now last night i tried what other people have been talking about and put a spoon down my throat with a bit of salt on it and rubbed my uvula with it,and i have got to tell you i woke up today (after doing it twice last night) and it is ALOT better, it is not making me wish i was dead. good luck everyne!

lumpy throat
Hi Everyone,

I'm glad to see there are others with this problem. My doctor prescribed Prilosec. It worked I think. I've had this problem before and was told to take allergy medicine. I couldn't decide if it went away on its own or because of the medicine. At any rate its back and it is so annoying. I don't understand why there isn't something more difinitive for this problem. I'm miserable most of the day except when I eat and sleep. I suppose I should be greatful for that. Glad to see that there are others with the same malady and that I'm not crazy.

I woke up today after a big night out, not quite sure where i was, and i had this same problem. It's happened once before to me after drinking too much, but it went away after about a day. Hopefully it'll be the same now.

I got up drank water and checked on the internet, apperantly was \\\\\\\"a dry pharyngitis\\\\\\\", cause for an excesive dry rum.It is winter here and last night the temperatures went almost -18, I gorgled ´salted water,as some recommended and everything got smaller after 4 hour except for the uvula which is still hanging...

After reading this forum I feel much relief!!!!

I will try to put salt directly on my uvula right away to see if it works!!!

had this happen, gargled w/ warm salt water after a day it was gone. it was kinda the beginning of a very bad cold. Mine was so enlarged I was literally gagging. A few simple gargles and the swelling had gone down.

Take the day off, see if it gets better
putting salt directly on the uvula sounded kind of crazy so I didn't try it, and it doesn't look like it worked so well that anyone who tried it ran back to their computer and raved about it.

I woke up with a huge uvula this morning after some pretty heavy whiskey drinking. I thought it was the biggest booger ever stuck in the back of my throat so I hacked and coughed violently for 15 minutes or so, feeling like I was gagging on something gross in the back of my throat, then I looked in the mirror and saw it was the uvula, twice as long as normal and really fat. My roomate told me to take antihistamines, which knocked me out for most of the day. Someone suggested that I was dehydrated, but what's weird is that i drank a good amount of water before bed.

Anyway it's still enlarged right now but it's less than half as bad as it was before, no more gagging sensation and it's only about 50% longer than normal. I really didn't do much about it except the normal regiment of cold fighting which is drinking orange juice, loading up on benadryl and lying on my side or stomach all day so it didn't get sucked into my airway. I gargled salt once but I was too drowsy from the benadryl to try it again. It feels like it should be back to normal by tomorrow, I'm usually very healthy and this whole uvula nonsense scared the crap right out of me.

funny interaction when I found out about it:
Me: Mike! There's some thing wrong with my labia! I mean my areola! I mean my this thing! (points to back of throat)
Roomate: Uvula?
Me: YEAH!

swollen uvula
Ok, in 9/2007 I had my tonsils out. The doctor did not take my adenoids, then in 10/2008 I had to have sinus surgery and they fixed my deviated septum and again they did not take my adenoids, but the CT scan did show it was enlarged. Well, ever since this last surgery my throat has not been the same. My uvula hurts, and it's swollen all the time. Sometimes it actually has a bubble on the tip of it. Anyways, the doctors are puzzled. They keep giving me antibiotics and steroids to shrink it. I can't sleep with out taking ambien(the ambien is just masking my problem so I can sleep). I see that most everyone on here says it goes away after a few days. Well, mine has been swollen for a few months, with little to no relief. I will have to try the salt/pepper thing. Any other help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Enlarged Uvula
It is truly fantastic to hear so many people have suffered from this condition. (in a nice way)

I have had this condition for 2 months now, had a blood test, showed no thyroid problems, which was a relief, but I did have high blood pressure, to which I have never had before. This my doctor felt was due to panic as assignments at Uni are due. Students tend to overwork themselfs at the last minute, causing your body to re-act in so many ways. Sleep is very important to repair the body, and unfortunately we dont get enough.
Eating crap food is another for high blood pressure.

Rules:
. Sleep 8hrs every day
. Eat fresh fruit and veg every day
. Exercise every day, a walk of 3miles or more is surfice.
. Avoid alcohol in mass, drink plenty of water.
. Dont panic, as it is not the end of the world, assignments can be done again.
. You have your life ahead live it.
. I have 2 disabled children to look after, and perhaps at times that takes it toll, but I love them.

Angelx

PS I am going to try those mints today, it is an old wifes tale that mint was used for clearing of sinus.

So thankful
About a year ago, I woke up with a gigantic uvula that scared the crap out of me so badly that I went to the hospital. The doctor's there said it was "Uvulitis" and gave me a steroid shot to get rid of the swelling. after feeling better, I played softball on my buddy's team and hit a 365' home run! Wink
But a few months later, I woke up with the same swollen uvula and took Extra Strength Tylenol and drank fluids and the swelling went down as the day went on.
The last 3 days, I've had bad sinus problems, and my wife says I've been snoring much worse than usual. Well ironically, I've also been waking up with Severe Dry throat and the walls around my uvula have been swelling as well. So I came on the internet only to find this thread. I felt like I had to go to the doctor's since know it's not just my uvula by the whole back of my throat. It's not painful, just swollen and tough to swallow, but not impossible.
But after hearing 3 things that was said on this post, I'm feeling a lot better about the prospect of going to the doctor's and getting "the worst news"
1) Sinus problems
2) after a big night of drinking, which did happen recently
3) High blood pressure

So I'll be drinking lots of water, I took my ibuprofen, and we'll see. But thanks to all for posting, it really seems like it made a bunch of people feel a lot better.

Yep Me Too
Went to the doc and she prescribed me Prednisone for 4 days (Steroid). I work up with it this morning. I did drink last night. I will also be Benadryling tonight. Thanks for the ideas! I will try the liquids and the salt water gargle.

Get a good Ear Nose and Throat guy (or gal). I read posts that they can laser that sucker off but make sure you get a specialist. Get out the "DO NOT Try This at Home" sign. There could very well be an underlying problem they would need to address first or in parallel.

Follow Up
Dangling Uvula no longer dangling. This is what I did:

40 MG Prednisone 2 Days then 20 MG 2 Days (I guess you have to ween off this stuff). See your Doc to make sure its right for you.

Eat cool foods like ice cream... nothing to scratch the back of the throat.

I did gargle with Salt water twice.

Benadryl before bed. A mint candy like HALLS would also help soothe the throat.

Hope this helps.

Uvula
What a great thread! My sinuses were TOTALLY stuffed up for about 2 nights last week while I had a bad cold. I was breathing through my mouth and kept waking up with wicked cotton mouth. Just when I thought things were looking up a bit and my nose was clearing up, it started to feel like I had a piece of ground beef or something stuck in the back of my mouth. I could not swallow it, and couldn't hack it out.
I'm glad to hear this is a fairly common thing and will clear up on it's own.
In meantime, ice cold beer is providing temporary relief. (and tastes better than salt water)

after a 20 hour drinking session I woke up about 12 hours after stopping drinkin with what I thought was a piece of skin from the roof of my mouth hangin in my throat. I went to the sink and tried to "hawk" it out for a while which was also making me gag badly. Then I noticed after a few minutes I was spitting up blood and touched it and I guess I aggrevated the uvula and it was bleeding. I gave up and went to bed and its still bugging the crap out of me. I read through this whole thread and a couple others. Im pounding cold water now to rehydrate. then Ill try the warm salt water. this better go away soon. I got lots more drinking and partying and concerts to do very soon and this just makes me wanna lie in bed! LAME!
btw, that whole;
"funny interaction when I found out about it:
Me: Mike! There's some thing wrong with my labia! I mean my areola! I mean my this thing! (points to back of throat)
Roomate: Uvula?
Me: YEAH!"
had me rofl!

I am also having trouble swallowing, due to a feeling of a lump in the throat. My dr. has told me I have a very long uvula. Has anyone had pain in the throat I guess by the gland area also? I am also worried it could be something worse. I smoke but don't drink.

I've had this happen twice over the past few weeks, both times after a bike ride. First time was a 90 mile ride and I'm sure I didn't drink enough water, so I figured it was dehydration that caused it. It was elongated enough to cause that sensation of having something stuck in my throat and lasted a few days before it went away.

Second time was a ride around 35 miles, and I'm pretty sure I didn't get dehydrated. It's not nearly as severe as the first time. I did notice that I was breathing through my mouth a lot and that my throat was drying out. Can the uvula get irritated and elongate from drying out?

I have had this same problem for about 2 months now. I first noticed a problem when I was eating and it kept feeling like food was getting stuck in my throat. Then I would feel like I needed to clear my throat, kinda like if there's mucus in your throat, but when I would go to clear my throat there was nothing there.
Then more recently, I have noticed that my throat gets mucus in it and I clear my throat and some mucus comes up. It's not a whole lot, just a few times of clearing my throat a little mucus comes up each time and that's it. I've also noticed that at other times my throat feels dry.
Then this evening I was having that 'lump in throat' feeling again, so I decided to look at my throat to see if it looked irritated or anything. I noticed that my uvula was touching my tongue. I also noticed that my tongue had kind of a whitish coating on it...mostly toward the back of my tongue.
Also this evening my throat felt mucusy, so I was clearing my throat and mucus was coming up...just a few times of clearing my throat with a little bit of mucus each time. And, now I have that 'lump in throat' feeling and my throat feels dry and a bit sore.
I do snore when I sleep, but have never had this problem before from snoring. I also have allergies and have taken Alavert (sp?) and sometimes Claritin for allergies. I usually use one or the other every time allergy season rolls around, but haven't this year. So, I'm wondering if maybe it's from allergies. Although, I've never had this problem before. It could also be from being dehydrated as I tend to drink diet caffeine free pop most of the time and not water. It's actually pretty rare that I do drink water. So, I am certainly going to be drinking lots of water from now on. I'm also going to try gargling with salt water. Hopefully that helps, but we'll see. I'm thinking of maybe going to the pharmacy tomorrow and asking the pharmacist for any suggestions on what I could take or do about it. Maybe they will be able to give me some kind of suggestion that might help.
