Hi, friday evening (1-20-05) I was sparring with one of my instructors, and seems my left side below my ribs was a target for harder than usual contacts. Later that night, about 3 hours later, as I was laying down relaxing and my left side all of a sudden felt like I had a strong muscle cramp. The pain kinda had a center to it but I could not pinpoint it. I thought I had an injured rib but it wasn't. I had taken some advil for the pain, it seemed to goaway after awhile so I went to sleep. At 2am I woke up and my left side was really hurting. I thought, oh yea, I just needed to use the restroom. So I did, and nothing unusual. Took some more advil, went to sleep. And at 4am or so I woke up with the same pain. I tried to find a way to laydown that would not hurt. Seemed if I slept on my right side it was almost manageable. Was able to go back to sleep after a bit. Then got up about 8am. While trying to go back to sleep I was thinking and I realized that I didn't eat dinner the night before because I really had no urge and the pain was an interuption to my normal routine.
The same thing happened satarday and sunday night as I layed down to relax and watch some tv.
Now here it is 1-24-05 about 2am. Because this pain seems to hit when I laydown for a bit. I do not lay down during the day because it isn't something I do so I don't know if the pain would occur during the day or not.
When I woke up sat. And sun. (late around 8am) my side did seem to feel better. However I usually wake up around 5:30am-6am every morning.
This pain is kind of a burning sensation but I cannot tell for sure. I have not felt anything like this before. I have had injured ribs, arms, legs but nothing broken.
I was hoping that friday night's pain issue was a single incident. Now I am very concerned because I am still having pain issues and now that I think about it I have not eaten meals like I normaly do. I didn't even feel like ordering a pizza for the weekend.
my 10 yr old has been having pain on his left side, when his dr felt around my son cringed when he touched his spleen. the dr ran a ton of blood and stated after it may be mono, but we will not know for sure for 5 days. my son does not appear to be sick all that he complains of is left side pain. when i had mono as a child i was very ill. he now is stating the pain is becomeing worst. what could be going on can mono cause this pain.
I have been experiencing severe pain under my left breast which is in the spleen area - it hurts when i am just sitting, standing, lying down - and the pain comes and goes - it gets worse then goes away then returns shortly - i haven't mentioned this to my dr because i forget (i have MS so i have a severe problem with my short term memory) recently my dr sent me for blood work and the liver count/enzymes came back abnormal - i am going for a sonagram then a ct scan of the liver and the pancreas due to the abnormal blood work on the liver - this pain i am not sure if it is related or not how do i find out? i am going to call my dr on monday to see if she can also add the spleen to be checked out with the sonagram and the ct scan - nothing i do seems to make the pain start or stop !!! can someone help me out with this pain?
Severe left flank pain, especially when lieing down
I have very similar pain symptoms. In my case I have a moderately enlarged spleen as a result of having CLL. Because of the pain on my left side, just at the rib line at the back, I ended up in emergency one night. They took three CT scans, three Xrays, a bone scan, plus other tests. I saw a specialist the next day, who said other possibilities were ruled out by the tests, and that the pain was caused by my spleen, possibly inflammation of the wall (sac) and that she expects it will go away on its own over some time (weeks). She also suggested radiation to reduce the size of the spleen, which I will likely do before long.
Meanwhile, I have only noticable pain in the AM, increasing as the day goes on, serious pain in bed at night especially if I were to lie on either side. I also have lost my appetite (I'm hungry, but fill up on very little). I find I do best at night sleeping propped up into an almost sitting position on pillows.
My doctor took pity on me and prescribed hydromorphone, a powerful narcotic pain killer which I try to take only at bed time. Oxycodone didn't touch the pain. During the day I take NSAID's such as naproxen, or ibuprofen, but they don't help much.
So that's my story. I hope it helps. Uncle Rennie
