Has anyone else been blessed with gallbladder disease and been on birth-control? I was and had surgury for the removal of my gallbladder. 1 year later I am reading in the instructions of my birthcontrol (that small pack of paper you get every month and don't read), and I discovered that birthcontrol can cause this. Has anyone else had this happen?
I started on Ortho Tri Cyclen in 2001 by quickly moved onto Kariva because of severe mood swings. By 2003, I had lost 40 pounds in a matter of weeks and needed to have my gallbladder removed. When Ortho Evra came out, I switched to avoid missing pills but my breast grew from B's to D's and I gained weight. In 2006, I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease and PCOS. At that time I was on Mircette until I stopped getting my period. My endocrinologist switched me onto Yasmin. I recently heard that there is a class action lawsuit against Yasmin for causing gallbladder disease but Yasmin obviously wasn't the cause for my digestive tract issues. But I know that birth control has had something to do with it!
I've been taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen for about a yr now. This past September I went to the emergency room with excruciating pain in my abdomen & vomiting. They sent me home, said I was constipated..I wish..Lol. The next day, I went to my family doctor. He sent me to have an ultrasound on my abdomen. They sent me back to my doctor who then sent me immediately to the surgeon's office. I had surgery the following morning. She told me if I had waited much longer, it could have been worse. I was "eat up" with gallstones. I'm glad I trusted my gut instinct. All I can say is if you feel it's worse than they tell you, get a second opinion. Go with your gut.
My story was almost exactly the same. I have been on birth control for about a year and a half now. A little less than a year ago I went to the ER with extreme stomach pain and vomiting after having this pain for awhile. At first they thought it was appendicitis but after some tests determined it wasn't.. I had the pain for months before I finally went into my family doctor and he ordered an ultrasound and found out I had a gallstone that was 2cm big! and I had a few other small ones. I ended up going to the ER the next day because the pain was so bad and they did an emergency situation. I firmly believe it was because of birth control because I am 20, and being 20 and needing your gallbladder out so young isn't common.
Very scary that so many women have similar stories. My issue was not with my gallbladder but I was rushed to the ER because one day I was just having trouble breathing and was coughing up blood. (So Scary) turns out a large blood clot was in my lung. I had to stay in the hospital for a week and had to take blood thinners for a long time after. I didn't know at the time it was caused by Yasmin but as I kept reading other peoples stories I put two and two together. MANY women are suing and getting compensation you may want to look into getting a lawyer, I did.
I have been on birth control for several years now to help regulate my hormones. This past august I had to have my gallbladder removed because it stopped working properly. I saw a thing about Yaz and such causing problems and decided to look up more information. Could the birth control be the cause of my gall bladder problems?
my daughter has been on a birth control since last summer and was starting to experience pain in the gall bladder area and it is now functioning at 21% instead of the normal 35%. There are no stones present but she has constant pain. Does anyone out there have these same symptoms?
I started birth control In May of 2008. Started having abdominal pain in April 2009. Went to 3 different GP doctors had tons of test that cost me a few thousands out of pocket. I kept getting the "Hmm..I'm not sure." answers. By the summer of 2010 I was so tired all the time that I would sleep 12 hours. The pain was getting so bad that I was missing work sometimes a few weeks at a time or even a month. I decided on my own to go to an allergy Dr, Dermo Dr, my OB Dr, p Dr and had a sleep study done. Lots and lots of tests...Nothing! Went back to GP Dr #1 who told me I had IBS! I looked it up and the only symptom I had was pain. I told his nurse who was lucky enough to call me "Shove it! There's no way I have IBS!" Went to GP #2 who finally sent me to a specialist. By this time it was December 2010. I got the right test! Gallbladder disease that is working at just under 5% with no stones. They also noticed in the scan that my gallbladder was small. They didn't realize how small it was until it was removed in December 2010. More than half the size of normal. He said it was the smallest he'd seen in his 35 years as a Doctor. He could not tell me if I was born that way or if the disease did it. Not sure if this help but I hope it does.
A year ago in January my daughter was put on birth control to help with severe cramping during her periods. She was missing atleast 2 days every month. She began having severe abdominal pain around Christmas time. A trip to the emergency room and an ultrasound 2 days later. It was determined that she has sludge in her gallbladder and is missing more school now than she was before the bc. She doesn't appear to have developed stones yet. She has done a few homeopathic flushes with little relief. I am wondering if it is possible to reverse the symptoms by taking her off the pill? Anyone out there have advise for this concerned mother?
I have been on birth control for about 4 years for ovarian cists and long heavy periods, in december I had to have my gallbladder removed due to stones and a few gallbladder attacks. I am only 19! I noticed the yaz problems so decided to look it up. I was never on yaz though, I have been on Loestrin24
I have been on Ortho-cyclene for a number of years. This past winter, I started having abdominal pain related to my gallbladder. I had a condition called "biliary-diskinesia," and had my gallbladder removed as a result. This condition has to do with the valves rather than an accumulation of gallstones. The doctors said that it wasn't related to birth control, but based on responses from women on forums like this, I have a hunch that it is related to the medication. Before having my gallbladder removed, I stopped taking the medication. Two months ago, I started up again and have gained 20 pounds and am having skin discoloration under my eyes and across the bridge of my nose. I'm getting off of it today!
I just had my gallbladder taken out in August because it was lined with Cholesterol. I've been using the Nuva Ring since January and I just read that high levels of estrogen causes the liver to push the cholesterol from the liver into the bile of the gallbladder. I believe this is why my gallbladder wasn't working and had to be removed.
I have been on Ortho Tri Cyclen for about 11 years now. I've never had problems with my gallbladder until 4 months ago when I started getting constant pain in my upper right abdominal area. The pain got worse and was especially bad after eating "bad" foods and at night. An ultrasound showed nothing as did the endoscopy. A HIDA scan with CCK showed my gallbladder functions at 12%. I have an appt with a surgeon Monday to get the gallbladder removed. I just discovered today that there is a correlation between gallbladder disease and Ortho Tri Cyclen. I'm go to call my gyno ASAP to get his advice. I've never been in so much pain in my life!
clearly women are being put at risk by birth control, what to do? what to do? i was on Ortho, my gallbladder was removed. i have been using natural methods since. not fun but i know what is in my body.
I developed a large gallstone after being on the pill for years. I have since gone off the pill and it has taken months of acupuncture to get my period regular again. If you're taking the pill for hormone regulation, I definitely recommend acupuncture. I also didn't want to have my gallbladder removed. There are other options out there, they just take a long time. After taking chinese herbs for three months, I had no more symptoms and now it's been nine months symptom free.
Hormones affect every system in the body, and unbalancing the hormones by the use of artificial hormones can therefore wreck havoc on the body in a number of ways.
i had to go to the emerge the other day due to pain in my abdomin. they are sending me for an ultrasound. when i went to my family doctor, to inform him of this, he still decided that going on birth control is okay. do you think that this will make my problems worse? im only 16...
I have never had issues with my gallbladder and recently have changed my eating habits and started losing weight. About a week and a half ago I started taking my birth control again and have found out I have issues with my gallbladder now. My doctor thinks its because 1 day 2 weeks ago I had some fatty foods. Is it possible that my birth control is actually the issue?
I just had my gall bladder removed. I never had ANY issues with my digestion system until I started taking birth control pills (Lutera) 2 months ago. I am a strong believer that this was caused by the increase in estrogen due to the pill. But what else to do? Every medication has side effects, and we have to decide which is the lesser evil; an unplanned pregnancy, irregular periods, or hormonal imbalance, or an effective form of birth control that causes gall bladder issues. Sad but true.
I am 16 years old, I was on orcella for 6 months, yaz 6 months, ortho for a year, and now im on the the depo shot and have been on this for about 6 months. I had problems for about 2 to 3 years. They told me at first that I had IBS. However I kept having problems. I finally got an ultra sound and found out that I have gallstones and might have to have my gall bladder removed I was wondering that if these birth controls can cause the gallstones in my gallbladder and if I should stop taking my birth control or not?
