Hi everyone! I've always read these message boards, but never signed up, because I never posted. So...I'm sorta' new. :)

i am 23 years old, and have two herniated disks, one on the smaller side, and the other "extremely large." i've been to physical therapy, and had coritsone injections, and neither have helped. My doctor referred me to a neurosurgeon (i meet with him on monday), but I was wondering if anyone thinks surgery should be my next step? Can this surgery make my back pain worse, the older I get? I have so many questions to ask him on monday, but I was wondering what your guys' opinions were, since you aren't the doctor. :)

thanks so much in advance!

Sure, surgery can make you worse but it can also make you better. The majority of the time, when you are reading health forums, you are going to read most of the posts from folks that have had bad results and so they are the most willing to "voice" discontent.

I am thrilled with the surgery I have just had and I would recommend to anyone that is told they need surgery to seriously consider it and weigh the positives and negatives. I am 32 and I know that I have been givenmy life back again. I can finction as a regular guy again. (not yet but I know I am on the right path)

depending on the area of your back that needs surgery, you could be a candidate for the new aritificial discs and then you wont have to worry about future surgeries due to failure of other intra-vertibral discs because of the stiffing of the repaired spaces.

Check out this site, it will answer alot of your surgery vs. Non-surgery questions. Www.Spineuniverse.Com
