Urine smells like popcorn
For the last 48 hours I have noticed that my urine has the distinct smell of popcorn and though I drink a lot of coffee in the morning, I usually consume a gallon or more of water before I go to bed. I also take melatonin each evening five (5) - 5mg tablets before retiring each evening. Can the melatonin cause this sudden smell or is it possibly something else?

male 52 healthy... urine suddenly became offensive
Hi I anm 53 but at 51/52 my urine suddenly started to smell like a seal. Especially fouls my pants , scrotum or crutch so I can smell it wafting up. It makes me embarrassed especially in mixed company. It is not a smell I revel in like underarm odour ( :
I considered it may be a urinary tract infection as it comes and goes. My diet has not changed and i drink tea, with milk and brown sugar for my entire liquid intake during the day. I do not drink alcohol or smoke. I have been eating more novelties like corn chips and chocolate. I might drink water occassionally. I do not eat as much meat as I did, but cannot eat large meals now, as I feel full on a small amount. My weight is as I was when I was twenty and I look about 32- 35. I pump sperm like a champion. I have little grey hair and it is natural dark blonde way past my shoulders. Urine colour is yellow to clear with no clear colour/ color association to smell. I do have problems with a fractured #C2 cervical vertebrae that has fused with the C3. My eyesight is going progressively but I feel the brain stem damage or the increasing fusion calcification may be affecting my optic nerves. anyway I have said my bit.. any ideas out there

I'd have a urine sample tested... Just in case.
I don't know for sure, but (sadly due to experience) it could be an E.coli infection, this UTI causing bacteria has a rather nasty smell as it exit's your body, it may be worth while getting a urine sample tested just in case and you may be able to catch it (if that is the case) before it has any bad effect on you. You can get plenty of perfectly safe, natural products to use instead of potentially damaging anti-biotics. I use a product called 'Waterfall D-Mannose' for some time now and have since been UTI free, and I'm much happier now.

Hope you stay well,

Chiyaki x

Strong odd odor in my urine
My urine has a very strong, odd smell. I drink a lot of water and I still get frequent urinary tract infections. I have talked to my doctor and she doesn't seem to think much of it except that i am not drinking enough water. I am though so I have ruled that out. Urine is sterile until it leaves the body so I believe that I may have some kind of kidney infection that is infecting my urine before it leaves my body. What do you all think?

me too
I have had frequent UTI's (well, I consider them frequent, as i've had about 20 in 15 years). I get the same thing, Drs brush off my concerns. I was also tested for bladder reflux, had ultrasounds of my kidneys, the whole works (at my request, and thus my expense, unfortunately). The tests show nothing and I still deal almost daily with frequent urination and strong smelling urine. Currently I am waiting to be seen for some other health issues, but I plan on bringing this up yet another time, as I can barely make it 50 feet from my kitchen to my bathroom at times. I know I'm not as good at drinking fluids as I should be, but even when I am more conscientious about doing so, the problems persist. It seems like reading through this we all have the same problem, and not many answers. I am not on any birth control or medications of any kind. If anybody has any suggestions, I welcome them.

Should I be Concerned?
That is so weird because for almost 2 weeks my urine has been really strong, I wanna say maybe it smells like popcorn..haha and I notice a texture in my urine almost looks like pulp from orange juice..gross I know-I'm not sexually active and it just came on so suddenly-Everytime I google it it brings up a urinary tract infection EXCEPT i don't have any other pain no stomach pain and no burning during urination, so I don't think that would be it. I have definately been drinking A LOT of coke and coffee and tea lately,NO water so i'm almost positive that has contributed but i HATE water it's so bland and I don't want it unless i'm working out and it's the only thing to drink!!

What looks like 'pulp' could either be the beginning of a UTI or yeast...either way, you want to get it resolved now before it gets worse. Urine should be clear...if cloudy, pulpy (is that a word?), reddish then something is going on. And if not treated, then it could move upwards towards the kidneys and trust me you do not want a kidney infection.

As far as not having any burning sensation during urination, not everyone will have burning, I only get discomfort around the bladder area, etc.

Try Vitamin Water or flavored water....water is so much better for you than cokes and coffee however green tea is something that I would definately drink, it is loaded with anti-oxidents.

Not being sexually active will not keep bladder / yeast infections away....

Urine appears to smell stronger than usually.
Hello,

Glad I found this web page to help with some of my questions. This problem of my urine smelling stronger for the first time ever has lasted about a year now. I became concerned with these changes so I went to the doctor about it, where he tested my urine and told me it was fine and not to worry. The day I went in to see the doctor, my urine for some reason didn't appear that strong. I'm a very clean person though now am self conscience about it after using a public restroom because it's that strong so usually I go, and then wait a few minutes before exiting the bathroom because i'm embarrassed about it. I have no infections, my diet has not changed at all, I do drink water throughout the day, though probably not as much as I should. I am a 44 year old woman so i'm thinking maybe i'll go back to the doctor and see if by change this is related to hormonal changes or something, though I have no signs of premenapause as of yet. I will try the pure cranberry juice to see if that helps. The smell is not foul, it's just different and stronger than normal and not discolored either. I'm going crazy trying to figure out what it is. the only thing that is different in my life is the fact that my current boyfriend of two years has had a vacsectomy and he's the only person i've not worn condoms with. We do have intercourse a lot so it could be related. I'm tired of going through this though and worrying that something else could be wrong. Any advice you could give me would be helpful.

Get a urine test
I had similar symptoms (strong-smelling urine, especially in the morning), but no pain at all. I thought maybe it was my vitamin supplements or birth control pills.

A month or two into it, I went to the doctor for something else and happened to mention the strong-smelling urine. The doc ordered a urine test and it turned out positive for bacteria.

So you CAN have a urinary tract infection without pain, urgency or any other problems. If your urine smells, go to the doctor and get a urine test.

STRONG SMELL
I am 15 years old and have had a problem with strong smelling urine for a few years now. (It smells like stale urine/fish?!)
I've never seen a doctor about it.
I use body sprays and deodrants daily but I can't cover the smell.
The strength of the smell can vary but it is always very strong just after i've been to the toilet... It makes me feel very self-conscious.

Why does it smell so strong and What can i do to get rid of it??!!

(I have been reading previous posts and it could be dehydration but does anyone have any other ideas...??? )

To Charlie93
I know it seems really embarrassing, but you should talk to doctor. I didn't want to deal with it either, but when I finally mentioned it to my doctor, she was like, "Hmm... okay, let's do a urine test." No big deal. A week later, I found out I had a urinary tract infection and she cleared it up with antibiotics. I hadn't had any pain... just the smell. And it totally went away with the antibiotics.

Can Bottled water formulated with electrolytes effect the smell
I wonder if drinking bottled water (SMART WATER with Electrolytes)can effect the smell of urine? Anyone have any infor regarding this? After having a bout with the stomach flu virus, I vomited quite a bit and had a very bad case of loose stool. I became quite dehydrated; therefore I elected to drink alot of bottled water formulated with "electrolytes". Addtionally, I drunk a few poweraide beverages supplemented with electrolytes (magnesium, potassium, calcium chlorides. Can the "electrolytes" in the water make the urine smell like urine?

Other causes...
I too have been experiencing a strong/sweet smelling urine all my life. It usually is the worst when I get up in the morning.

I've talked to many doctors/specialists about this, and all they seem to suspect is UTI's and such. But most recently, my primary care physician said that certain foods can sometimes cause this. Red meats, nuts, and eggs being the most noteworthy.

I have noticed that if I try to stay away from those foods that I don't have the odor as often.

Strong smelly urine
A friend told me that eating asparagus and/or artichokes can also causing a strong smell when urinating.

I also have a strong smell from time to time. If it was consistent, I would go and see a doctor.
