Q: Heart Disease In a 24 Year Old Woman?

For the past three years I have been experiencing left arm pain. Feels like stabbing pain in shoulder and numb feeling in my lower arm and wrist which seems like the veins may explode, it is not uncommon for this to be accompanied by what I can only describe as an electrical sensation in my chest although I must stress that I would not regard this as painful. About a year ago I also began to suffer from palpitations which feel like a quick burst of jumping heartbeats which return to normal after about twenty seconds, I feel these most days and frequently in colder weather. I have also started having dizzy spells and periods of lightheadedness which can last for hours or days at a time, I feel oddly detached and like my vision is jumpy and these episodes are often accompanied by the feeling that I cannot get enough breath into my lungs. My doctor has put this all down to anxiety but I am a carefree person and only feel depressed after these events and never before. I am hopeful that somebody may be able to shed some light on this problem which I feel is ruining my life.

Thanks everyone

Tests
I have had an ekg a 24 hour tape and a coronary calcium scan which showed a calcium score of 1 which is a low score but still high for somebody my age. During the 24 hour tape I had no symptoms as it was back in march and my symptoms were less frequent then.

Well
I am 48, have severe heart disease, to get to this degree means I had it in my twenties, so yes it can happen.
Offense is your best defense, start taking care now.
Fish oil, folic acid vitamin b-12 daily, dont smoke and exercise.
Otherwise I wouldnt worry and enjoy your youth, ok?? :d
wish you luck, lupnes

Thanks Lupne
I am grateful that somebody answered my post as I have posted the same question in other areas and never recieved any feedback. I have just been reading another question which I noticed you had replied to and in that you described the severity of your cardiovascular disease. I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear that you are in so much pain. Thanks for your time.

You Are Welcomed.
If I can prevent anyone from going through what I did, then my existance on this earth is justified..Lol..
Also you didnt mention family history?
In mine its bad , paternal side..Lol..Everyone had mi's and 2 had mitral valve replacements(3 counting me), arteriosclerosisi, and deaths or strokes before 50 yrs of age.
Family history can be a huge factor.
Also check your homocystein levels, high levels can cause premature heart disease.
Let us know ok?

Homocystein?
Do they get that from a choleterol test? My cholesterol was normal when I last had it checked (about 1 year ago) since then I have lost 5 stone, quit my 40 a day habit and only eat 4 grams of saturates/ trans fats daily so I imagine its even better now! As for family history its actually quit good. Both my parents are alive although my dad has high blood pressure(at 57) and my mother has just been diagnosed with very slight angina(at 55) my grandfather dies of an acute mi at 57 but he was also a diabetic.
Just out of interest, do the symptoms I mentioned sound suggestive of coronary disease. I would also be inclined to think I was too young and put it all down to something else, possibly mitral valve prolapse but the tingling arm pain doesn't fit.

Ok
Diabetes can cause heart damage, your family history suggest that you watch out.
55 is young to have angina and what is causing the angina?
High b/p as well.
A simple blood test can show high cholestorol and high homocystein(anything over 15% is high for homocysteins).
Some families( mine) have a genetic disorder , where they do not absorb folic acids and vitamins b12 and b 6 , which in turn cause's high homocysteins.
Stopping smoking is the best thing(i still cant stop), so you are headed in the right direction.
If your dr had you on a monitor than they realize the history as well, best nip it in the bud and live a long life.
If homcysteins are a cause ; catch it quickly as it will damage the arteries to the degree I have. Even the smoking cant do this(drs words), I am on 11 different meds & vitamins and you do not want this I assure you.
Let me know ok? Lupne

Extremely eHealthy
The original post listed some symptoms that could also be caused by high cholesterol &/or pre-diabetes/diabetes so i'd get sugar & cholesterol levels checked.
