Q: Possible Pregnancy While On Pill?

My girlfriend started her birthcontrol pill yesterday...And she suffered from the side affect cramps of it.

I'm guessing it's already in her system since she's already getting the side affects...My only question is...

....When we had sex tonight, I didn't pull out because I thought for sure that since she started on her pill yesterday...That by this morning (as of 30 minutes ago) that she wouldn't be able to get pregnant now.

Is that true? Because if it isn't...Then I probably got her pregnant...And yet i'm not sure either.

Will the pill have stopped her possiblity to get pregnant by now?

Please respond.

Most women's bodies take a month to adjust to the hormone levels in the pill. This means that there is a slight chance of pregnancy the first month as the body will still ovulate and adjust. After the first month, the pill usually stops the woman's body from ovulating which is why they are about 99% effective at preventing pregnancy (no egg, no pregnancy).

I've never had cramps when I started the pill or switched to a different brand. Was she about to start her period when she started taking the pills?

the "pull-out" method is not a real form of birth control. It is risky and I am glad that she is seeking another method. I would suggest that for these first few months, you use condoms when you have sex and may also want to use spermicide. Using more than one method of birth control (real methods, not the pull out) further decreases your chances of experiencing an unplanned pregnancy.

relax. When I was young, I used to worry constantly about getting pregnant and that added stress sometimes tricked my body into displaying symptoms and it also sometimes made my period late which added further stress. If you are really worried about it, have her take a pregnancy test. Pregnancy is most likely to occur in mid-cycle, about two weeks before her period. If she started her pill pack on time (at the beginning of her month), then your chances of pregnancy are low. Don't panic until there's something to panic about.

In the future, for the rest of the month, please, please, please use condoms if you do not wish for her to become pregnant. This way, while her body adjusts to the pill, you will still be protected and your chances of pregnancy are low.

Hope this helps,
jenn
